Je vais aller un peu à l’encontre de mes billets précédents en parlant d’un jeu pour lequel le langage est essentiel, et d’ailleurs l’un des rares sur lequel j’ai travaillé entièrement en français, que je ne me sens pas capable d’adapter en anglais, car c’est bien une adaptation qui est nécessaire et non une simple traduction. Ce jeu demanderait d’ailleurs sans doute une édition anglaise et une édition américaine. Speed Dating sort en effet dces jours-ci en japonais – mais Stéphanie, de Letheia, cherche toujours des éditeurs intéressés par une publication de ce jeu dans d’autres langues.
En attendant, la version japonais donne aux hommes comme aux femmes quelques possibilités qui ne figuraient pas dans la version de base – “est un descendant direct du Sengoku Daimyo”, “a un robot-chat pour le consoler quand il a des soucis”, “envoie cinquante cartes postales par jour”, “n’attache pas d’importance à l’argent car elle paie tout avec la carte bleue de son papa” – et bien d’autres qui, après passage dans Google Translate, ne semblent avoir aucun sens.
Je me demande si le “R15” signifie “interdit aux moins de 15 ans”, peut-être un ami japonais pourra-t-il me répondre.
In a recent post, I argued, maye be with some exaggeration or anticipation, that most games could nowadays be published only in English. This is not true of all games, and Speed Dating is one of the few games which I’ve designed entirely French. I don’t think I would be able to make even a rough English version of it, because it needs an adaptation, a full localization, rather than a simple translation. It even probably needs different versions for the US and for Great Britain. Anywyay, Speed Dating is still looking for a US or English publisher (and for publishers in any other languages), but the Japanese version will hit the shelves very soon.
It has some fun and specifically japanese cards, such as “is a direct descendant of Sengoku Daimyo”, “has a cat-robot to comfort him when he feels sad”, “sends fifty postcards every day”, “doesn’t care about money and always uses her dad’s credit card” – and many more whose meaning I couldn’t fathom from a Google translation.
I wonder if the “R15” is an age restriction – may be some Japanese gamer can confirm or infirm this wild guess.
Usually “R15” means age restriction (allowed for 15 and over, in Movie rating system), although there is no legal restriction for board game. I think they just wanted to say that the game is designed for 15 and up, with a sense of humor. I’m interested in how they translated/localized/adapted the game as a Japanese gamer.
Japanese is very different from European language and learning English is much tougher than most of the European people. So the translation and localization is quite important to us, actually.
