<\/a><\/p>\nDans un billet r\u00e9cent<\/a>, j’ai justifi\u00e9 l’importance que j’attache, dans la conception d’un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, au principe de l’\u00e9conomie de moyens, que les intellectuels appellent le rasoir d’Ockham. Je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re toujours introduire un effet amusant, un choix difficile, une strat\u00e9gie int\u00e9ressante dans un jeu sans avoir recours \u00e0 de nouveaux m\u00e9canismes, plut\u00f4t qu’en ajoutant une nouvelle r\u00e8gle, un nouvel \u00e9l\u00e9ment, un nouveau type de cartes. C’est la principale raison pour laquelle je n’\u00e9tais pas enti\u00e8rement d’accord avec les gens de Hans im Glueck, l’\u00e9diteur allemand de Citadelles, lorsqu’il s’est agi d’imaginer quelques cartes suppl\u00e9mentaires dans la nouvelle \u00e9dition allemande du jeu. Les effets des cartes de la mini-extension sur le th\u00e8me du cirque sont simples et bien trouv\u00e9s, et ajoutent certainement du dynamisme au jeu. J’aurais pourtant pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 que, \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re de ce que j’avais fait dans la Cit\u00e9 Sombre, ces effets soient amen\u00e9s par des cartes quartiers, ce qui aurait le plus souvent \u00e9t\u00e9 possible, plut\u00f4t que par un nouveau type de carte dont l’invention rompt avec ce principe d’\u00e9conomie. Certes, c’est plus une question d’\u00e9l\u00e9gance que d’int\u00e9r\u00eat ludique, car les cartes sont amusantes, longuement test\u00e9es et renouvellent le jeu. Mais bon, j’ai mon amour-propre, et j’aurais pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 que Citadelles se d\u00e9veloppe sans avoir recours \u00e0 de nouvelles r\u00e8gles.<\/p>\n J’ai peut-\u00eatre tort. C’est en effet pour la m\u00eame raison que je n’\u00e9tais pas favorable \u00e0 l’introduction des cartes artefacts dans Diamant. Avec le recul, je pense m’\u00eatre tromp\u00e9 et suis content qu’Alan ait insist\u00e9 pour que ces\u00a0 cartes soient ajout\u00e9es \u00e0 l’\u00e9dition am\u00e9ricaine, Incan Gold. Il en ira peut-\u00eatre de m\u00eame pour Citadelles.<\/p>\n C’est un peu la m\u00eame chose en ce qui concerne la th\u00e9matique choisie pour ces cartes. D’un c\u00f4t\u00e9, je pense que donner \u00e0 ces nouvelles cartes un th\u00e8me commun \u00e9tait une excellente id\u00e9e, et que le cirque est un univers fort bien choisi. Les illustrations sont superbes, notamment le dessin de la voyante. D’un autre c\u00f4t\u00e9, je regrette que les graphismes et les noms des cartes les situent au d\u00e9but du XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, donc sans coh\u00e9rence avec l’univers graphique de Citadelles, plut\u00f4t ancr\u00e9 dans une Fantasy Renaissance. Et je n’ai toujours pas compris pourquoi le fort des halles s’appelle Raspoutine.<\/p>\n Bref, une extension qui renouvelle et dynamise le jeu, avec laquelle je jouerai sans doute avec plaisir, mais qui rompt \u00e0 la fois avec l’\u00e9l\u00e9gance et la sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 des m\u00e9canismes et avec la coh\u00e9rence th\u00e9matique de Citadelles. Je le regrette d’autant plus que je pense qu’il aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 possible de faire autrement.<\/p>\n In a recent post<\/a>, I explained why I considered economy of means, aka Ockham’s razor, to be a basic principle of sound game design. When adding a new fun effect, critical choice or challenging strategy to a game, I always try first to do it without adding any new rule, any new turn phase, any new card type, any new game system. It’s not always possible, but at least I try. That’s the reason why I am not enthused by the new cards the German publisher of Citadels, Hans im Glueck, has added to the new reprint of Citadels. The card effects are simple enough, cleverly designed and well balanced, and certainly make the game more dynamic. I would nevertheless have preferred to have the same effects triggered by new district cards, which was possible for most, than by a new type of card which Ockham’s razor would have shaven off. Of course, the issue is more with style than with gaming interest. The new action cards look really fun, and I’m confident they have been balanced and tested well, but at least for pride and elegance reasons, I would have preferred Citadels to be developed without adding any new rule.<\/em><\/p>\n I may be wrong. I was with Diamant, when for the same reason I didn’t want to add the artifact cards in the US edition of the game, Incan Gold. I’m now very happy that Alan insisted on this, because I’ve realized they add a lot to the game. May be it will be the same with actions cards in Citadels.<\/em><\/p>\n I have a similar feeling with the theme of these new cards. On the one hand, choosing a specific theme for all these action cards was a great idea, and the Circus is a good theme. The graphics are great \u2013 I especially like the Seer. On the other hand, it’s a bit strange to have early XXth century pictures added to a fantasy-renaissance setting. Why not Renaissance artists? And I still don’t understand why the strong guy is called Rasputin.<\/em><\/p>\n This small 15 cards expansion revitalizes the game and makes it more dynamic, and I will certainly play with it, but it breaks with the sobriety and elegance of Citadels mechanisms, and with its thematic consistency.
