J\u2019ai en effet du mal \u00e0 imaginer comment la pl\u00e9thore de nouveaut\u00e9s des salons d\u2019Essen, puis de Nuremberg, et m\u00eame plus modestement de Cannes pourront trouver une place sur les rayons des boutiques de jeux. Je voudrais donc dresser ici une petite liste des changements en cours dans la cr\u00e9ation, l\u2019\u00e9dition et la distribution de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui me semblent illustrer des tentatives pour s\u2019en sortir.<\/p>\n<p>Le march\u00e9 du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 ressemble de moins en moins \u00e0 celui d\u2019un bien durable. C&#8217;est devenu un march\u00e9 d&#8217;actualit\u00e9, comme celui du livre. Cela peut semble paradoxal, car tandis qu\u2019on ne lit le plus souvent un livre qu\u2019une seule fois, on pourrait penser qu\u2019un jeu est destin\u00e9 \u00e0 ressortir \u00e0 de multiples reprises et n\u2019est donc pas un produit de consommation imm\u00e9diate. Certes, les jeux invendus ne sont pas encore envoy\u00e9s au pilon apr\u00e8s quelques semaines &#8211; cela viendra peut-\u00eatre &#8211; mais la dur\u00e9e de vie d\u2019un titre dans les vitrines des boutiques, voire m\u00eame sur leurs \u00e9tag\u00e8res, est de plus en plus r\u00e9duite.<br \/>\nS\u2019il reste quelques valeurs sures aux ventes relativement r\u00e9guli\u00e8res, des jeux install\u00e9s depuis plus de dix ans et qui continuent \u00e0 se vendre r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, les Catan, Carcassonne, Jungle Speed, Loups Garous, Aventuriers du rail, ou m\u00eame Citadelles, les nouveaut\u00e9s n\u2019ont plus gu\u00e8re de chance de conna\u00eetre une telle carri\u00e8re. Le dernier auquel cela est arriv\u00e9 est Codenames. Pour un nouveau jeu, un succ\u00e8s commercial est d\u00e9sormais une vente de 50.000 boites en six mois avant qu\u2019il ne soit oubli\u00e9, et un \u00e9chec commercial une vente de 2000 boites en six mois avant qu\u2019il ne soit oubli\u00e9. C\u2019est un peu dommage pour les jeunes auteurs, et pour les nouveaux jeux qui soutiennent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement tr\u00e8s bien la comparaison avec les vieux classiques, mais je ne serais gu\u00e8re \u00e9tonn\u00e9 si m\u00eame les quelques \u00ab\u00a0valeurs sures\u00a0\u00bb cit\u00e9es plus haut voyaient bient\u00f4t leurs ventes s\u2019\u00e9roder face \u00e0 cette tendance au renouvellement permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Ayant eux aussi fait ce constat, les \u00e9diteurs r\u00e9agissent de plusieurs mani\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p>La strat\u00e9gie de croissance externe d\u2019Asmod\u00e9e &#8211; pardon, Asmodee &#8211; tient visiblement compte cette \u00e9volution. Le d\u00e9mon du jeu a en effet acquis, plus ou moins dans le monde entier, les droits de Catan, des Aventuriers du Rail, de Carcassonne, de Pand\u00e9mie, de Dobble, de Citadelles\u2026 bref de jeux dont on peut penser que les ventes vont se maintenir. Je ne serai pas vraiment \u00e9tonn\u00e9 de lire demain qu\u2019Asmod\u00e9e est entr\u00e9 en \u00ab\u00a0discussion exclusive\u00a0\u00bb avec Czech Games Editions\u2026. Bien s\u00fbr, ce choix n\u2019\u00e9tait financi\u00e8rement pas \u00e0 la port\u00e9e de tous\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Les nouvelles cartes des Aventuriers du Rail, les nouvelles boites d\u2019Unlock et d\u2019Exit, les nouveaux sc\u00e9narios de Time Stories, les nouvelles campagnes de Pandemic et des autres Legacy games, les extensions de Zombicide, sont une autre fa\u00e7on de maintenir des jeux dans l\u2019actualit\u00e9 et sur les \u00e9tag\u00e8res de magasins, d\u2019en faire parler sur les sites ludiques, et contribuent \u00e0 prolonger la vie d\u2019un titre. Paradoxalement, cela nuit presque, au bout du compte, aux jeux qui n\u2019ont nul besoin d\u2019extensions ou de sc\u00e9narios pour se renouveler; c&#8217;est un peu comme si la qualit\u00e9 de leur conception devenait un d\u00e9faut commercial.<\/p>\n<p>Beaucoup d\u2019\u00e9diteurs de taille moyenne choisissent plut\u00f4t la fuite en avant, entretenant un peu la d\u00e9rive \u00e0 laquelle ils tentent de s\u2019adapter. Si chaque jeu se vend moins longtemps et a moins de chance d\u2019\u00eatre remarqu\u00e9, il faut multiplier les sorties, voire les gammes. <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=8884\"><strong>Dragons<\/strong><\/a>, qui sortait pour le salon de Cannes chez Matagot, est un jeu de prise de risque dont je suis tr\u00e8s fier, mais je ne sais pas trop quelles sont ses chances d\u2019\u00eatre rep\u00e9r\u00e9, jou\u00e9, critiqu\u00e9, discut\u00e9, quand il n\u2019est que l\u2019une des huit nouveaut\u00e9s de Matagot, elles-m\u00eames quelques unes des centaines de nouveaut\u00e9s du salon. Et quand il n\u2019est aussi, je sais, que l\u2019une des trois nouveaut\u00e9s de Faidutti, car cette r\u00e9action est aussi celle de beaucoup d&#8217;auteurs.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019autres \u00e9diteurs acceptent de vendre leurs jeux moins longtemps, et compensent cela en essayant de les vendre plus massivement encore \u00e0 leur sortie, et en augmentant leurs marges. C\u2019est l\u2019une des explications \u00e0 l\u2019usage croissant de Kickstarter non seulement par de petits \u00e9diteurs, mais aussi par des relativement gros, et \u00e0 l\u2019apparition maintenant des jeux vendus uniquement de cette mani\u00e8re. Zombicide et Conan \u00e9taient surtout sur Kickstarter, Hate et Batman ne sont plus que sur Kickstarter. One shot. Une campagne kickstarter bien men\u00e9e, jouant sur l\u2019attrait de la nouveaut\u00e9, peut g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des ventes consid\u00e9rables, toutes livr\u00e9es d\u2019un seul coup sans passer par un distributeur, et peu importe ensuite que le jeu meure rapidement.<\/p>\n<p>Ces tendances diff\u00e9rentes, qui peuvent se compl\u00e9ter ou s\u2019opposer, sont toutes des tentatives de r\u00e9ponse au m\u00eame probl\u00e8me, une offre pl\u00e9thorique face \u00e0 une demande qui s\u2019accroit, mais pas au m\u00eame rythme. Pour un auteur install\u00e9 comme moi, dont certains jeux continueront tr\u00e8s probablement \u00e0 se vendre encore quelques ann\u00e9es, cela n\u2019est pas si grave. I can\u2019t imagine how the plethora of new games shown in Essen, then in Nuernberg, then to a lesser extent in Cannes, can find a place on the boardgame shops\u2019 shelves. That\u2019s why I will try to list the changes in gaming design, publishing and distribution which might be attempts to get out of this mess.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The boardgame market is becoming more versatile. It looks less and less like a durable goods market, and is more and more actuality driven, like the books market, and this even though games are supposed to be played and replayed while books are rarely read more than once, at least by the same person.\u00a0 Unsold games are not yet destroyed like unsold books are, though this might happen soon, but the life expectancy of games in the store fronts, or even on the store shelves, is becoming shorter and shorter.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A few classics, usually more than ten years old, still sell regularly &#8211; Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, even my Citadels &#8211; but fewer and fewer games are added to this list. The last one that did it was Codenames. For publishers, a successful new game is a game that sells 50.000 copies in six months before being forgotten, and a failed one a game that sells 2.000 copies in six months before being forgotten. It\u2019s a shame for young designers, and for new games which, most times, are as good if not better than old classics. Well, even classics are becoming fragile, and I would not be surprised if the sales of some of the staples cited above started declining.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Of course, publishers have noticed this, and are trying to adapt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Asmodee\u2019s external growth strategy clearly takes this into account. The game\u2019s devil has recently acquired, more or less for the whole world, the rights on solid and regular sellers such as Catan, Ticket to Ride, even my Citadels. I would not be surprised if I read tomorrow that they are entering \u00ab\u00a0exclusive discussions\u00a0\u00bb with Czech games Edition. Of course, such a policy is not within everyone&#8217;s reach.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The many Ticket to Ride maps, the new Unlock and Exit boxes, the Time Stories scenarios, the Zombicide expansions, the Legacy games campaigns, all these are tricks aimed at keeping games on the store shelves, at keeping the buzz alive on gaming websites.They make the commercial life of games longer. Paradoxically, it might hurt the best games, those which don\u2019t need expansions or scenarios to feel fresh. It\u2019s as if their design strength were becoming a commercial flaw.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Many middle-sized publishers are fleeing forward, thus strengthening the trend they are trying to resist. Every game sells for a shorter time and has fewer opportunities to become a hit, so they publish more games, or even more lines of games. I\u2019m really proud of my new card game <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=8884\"><strong>Dragons<\/strong><\/a>, which was shown by Matagot at Cannes, but it was only one of their eight new games, which were themselves only some of the hundred new games on the fair. And, yes, it was only one of the three Faidutti new games, since this reaction is also that of most designers\u2026The odds that Dragons will be seen, noticed, played, discussed&#8230; are quite low.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Other publishers try to make the best of the shortest lifespan of games with selling them massively at once, and increasing their margins. This is one of the reasons why Kickstarter is so frequently used not only by small, but also by relatively big publishers, and why we now have more and more kickstarter exclusive games. Zombicide and Conan were mostly Kickstarter, Hate and Batman are only kickstarter. One shot. A cleverly managed kickstarter campaign can generate massive sales, all delivered directly and at once, and the game can then be let to die.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These various trends might complement or contradict, but they all try to answer the same problem, a supply of new games growing faster than the demand &#8211; even when demand still grows steadily. For an established designer like me, it\u2019s not that serious.
