Captain Pirate est un petit jeu de cartes, simple et rapide, ont la principale originalit\u00e9 est que les joueurs doivent se mettre \u00e0 deux pour constituer des \u00e9quipages de pirates et monter des exp\u00e9ditions. Bref, une sorte de jeu par \u00e9quipe o\u00f9 les \u00e9quipes changent tout le temps et o\u00f9 chacun essaie en permanence de rouler son partenaire. Une bonne ambiance de piraterie, quoi.<\/p>\n

Histoire du jeu<\/strong><\/p>\n

Les jeux de Gwena\u00ebl Bouquin, connu sous le pseudo de Yaourth sur les forums ludiques, ont ceci en commun d’\u00eatre tous des jeux relativement l\u00e9gers, et souvent des jeux de cartes. J’aime beaucoup son Okaido, dont j’esp\u00e8re qu’il trouvera bient\u00f4t un \u00e9diteur, et j’avais beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 de travailler avec lui sur Toc Toc Toc!, un jeu sans grande pr\u00e9tention mais bien amusant.<\/p>\n

Pour Captain Pirate, aussi surprenant que cela puisse para\u00eetre au vu du r\u00e9sultat final, nous sommes partis du th\u00e8me. Nous voulions faire un jeu de pirates, ou plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment un jeu sur le th\u00e8me de la carte au Tr\u00e9sor \u00e0 d\u00e9chiffrer. L’id\u00e9e de la carte au Tr\u00e9sor que les joueurs doivent peu \u00e0 peu d\u00e9chiffrer me trotte dans la t\u00eate depuis des ann\u00e9es, et je ne compte plus les \u00e9bauches de jeu plus ou moins bas\u00e9es sur cette id\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Avec Gwena\u00ebl, nous sommes partis d’un principe simple. Plusieurs cartes au tr\u00e9sor ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9chir\u00e9es, d\u00e9coup\u00e9es en un certain nombre de morceaux. Les joueurs sont des pirates qui se retrouvent \u00e0 la taverne, chacun avec ses feuillets d\u00e9chir\u00e9s, et qui vont devoir n\u00e9gocier et s’allier pour reconstituer les pi\u00e8ces des diff\u00e9rents puzzles et partir ensuite d\u00e9terrer les tr\u00e9sors cach\u00e9s. Cette id\u00e9e toute b\u00eate, apr\u00e8s quelques faux d\u00e9parts, a d\u00e9bouch\u00e9 sur un jeu de cartes au m\u00e9canisme central simple et original – un jeu de style ramy, mais dans lequel un joueur ne peut jamais faire de combinaison tout seul et doit toujours s’allier avec un rival auquel il offre de partager les points s’il apporte les cartes qui lui manquent.<\/p>\n

Avec une cinquantaine de cartes, le jeu avait le format des kangourous d’Asmod\u00e9e ou des petites boite m\u00e9talliques de Cocktail Games. C’est Matthieu qui s’est d\u00e9cid\u00e9, et c’est donc chez Cocktail Games qu’il est sorti, sous le nom de Captain Pirate. Le th\u00e8me des pirates a bien \u00e9t\u00e9 conserv\u00e9, mais il ne s’agit plus de r\u00e9unir les diff\u00e9rents fragments d’une carte mais plut\u00f4t de recruter un \u00e9quipage complet. La Carte au Tr\u00e9sor est donc devenue Captain Pirate, un titre qui a par ailleurs l’avantage d’\u00eatre international.<\/p>\n

Les illustrations de Captain Pirate font beaucoup pour le charme du jeu. Les personnages, une vingtaine de pirates et un perroquet, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 dessin\u00e9s avec talent par G\u00e9rald Guerlais, un nouveau venu dans le monde de l’illustration ludique. C’est beau, dr\u00f4le, typ\u00e9 et original. J’esp\u00e8re bien retrouver un de ces jours la patte et la signature G\u00e9rald Guerlais sur d’autres de mes jeux, ou simplement sur d’autres jeux.<\/p>\n

Captain Pirate a short and fast paced card game. Its main originality is that player cannot launch an expedition alone and always have to get the help from another player in order to gather a pirate team and put off the sea. This means it’s a kind of team game with ever changing teams in which each partner is always trying to double cross the other – a good piracy atmosphere <\/em><\/p>\n

History of the game<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Gwena\u00ebl Bouquin’s game designs have one thing in common – they are all light games, and most of them are card games. I especially like his Okaido, and hope it will soon find a publisher. I had great fun working with him on Knock Knock!, a modest but really fun game.<\/em><\/p>\n

Believe it or not, Captain Pirate’s design started from the theme and not the mechanism. We wanted to design a pirate game, or more specifically a game about treasure maps. For years, I have been tinkering with treasure maps ideas, and I started several designs in which the different parts of the map were discovered while the game goes on, or in which each player had only some of the informations and had to get the rest from his rivals.<\/em><\/p>\n

With Gwen, we started from a simple idea. Several treasure maps have been teared in four or five pieces. Players are pirates gathered in a tavern. They must negociate and make alliances to bring together the different parts of the puzzles and then launch expeditions to unearth the hidden treasures. After a few false starts and trials, this idea led us to a very simple system – a set collection card game in which you can’t make a collection alone but must ask for some help from your rivals, giving them opportunities to score points with you.<\/em><\/p>\n

With about fifty cards, this game had the perfect size for the small square boxes either of Asmod\u00e9e, either of Cocktail Games, both publishers with which I have friendly relations. Matthieu was the first to answer, so Captain Pirate was published by Cocktail Games, in a small metallic box. The publisher kept the pirate theme but altered it a bit. The goal is no more together the different parts of a treasure map, it is to recruit a full pirate team to launch a ship. That’s why our Teasure Map has been renamed Captain Pirate, which is also a more international title.<\/em><\/p>\n

The graphics in Captain Pirate have been drawn by a young Parisian artist G\u00e9rald Guerlais. I think it’s the first time he illustrates a game, and I hope I will find his name and style on other games of mine, or just on other games. The twenty cartoony pirates, and the parrot, are all great characters.<\/em><\/p>\n
