There, I met Michael Schacht, the author of Kardinal und Koenig (Web of Power), who had also been nominated – though I’d rather play his TohuWaBohu. Of course, when two game authors meet, they talk about inventing games. And Michael told me a bout a little card game, Die Tafelrunde, that he had just self-published.

The description sounded interesting and, a few weeks later, I managed to find a copy and play it. Die Tafelrunde was a nice little card game of the Family Business / Guillotine / Castle family, the kind of game I could have made. Draco, king of thieves, and his noisy gand of rogues and goblins, were meeting in a tavern, sitting around a large round table, and divying up the loot. Almost at once, I have lots of ideas for new cards, new characters, and a bit more alcohol and chaos, and I send a few long emails full of ideas to Michael Schacht.

The answer came at once: all this sounds interesting, wrote Michael, why not make a new improved version of this game together? Well, why not! I have little german, Michael doesn’t speak french, but we both use Macs, which is probably more critical, and we started exchanging and correcting english cards and rules files, which were translated in french and german and tested on both sides. A few weeks later – this went surprisingly fast – the new Round Table was ready. Draco had started drinking a bit too much, and a few new characters had joined the gang, such as Brother John and the old Aunt Sarah. Of course, Zork was still here, no way to get rid of him.

Like many of the light card games I used to design in these times, Draco & Co was published by Jeux Descartes, in the Blue Games series. Jeux Descartes doesn’t exist any more, and this light and unpretentious game is now out of print.

Draco & Co
A game by Michael Schacht & Bruno Faidutti
Art by Julien Delval
3 to 6 players – 60 minutes
Published by Jeux Descartes (2001)
BoardgameGeek
