C\u2019est la question la plus souvent pos\u00e9e aux auteurs de jeu, au point que cela en est devenu lassant. Si ma r\u00e9ponse varie c\u2019est un peu parce que ma pratique a vari\u00e9, mais c\u2019est aussi parce qu\u2019il n\u2019est pas toujours facile de distinguer les deux. Dans le cas de <em>Nutz!<\/em>, c\u2019est clairement la m\u00e9canique qui est \u00e0 l\u2019origine du jeu, mais comme l\u2019illustre le fait que, tout au long de son d\u00e9veloppement, ce jeu a connu quatre th\u00e8mes successifs, dont seulement deux, les pirates et les \u00e9cureuils, pouvaient effectivement coller aux syst\u00e8mes de jeu.<\/p>\n<p>Dans ce jeu, chaque manche est divis\u00e9e en deux phases. Durant la premi\u00e8re, les joueurs posent des cartes en colonnes de trois cartes maximum, parfois faces visibles, parfois faces cach\u00e9es. Pourtant, on sentait un probl\u00e8me qui mettait les joueurs mal \u00e0 l\u2019aise et les emp\u00eachait d\u2019appr\u00e9cier vraiment la partie. Dans l\u2019id\u00e9al, une partie d\u2019un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 doit \u00eatre un r\u00e9cit qui se d\u00e9roule, dans lequel le joueur sait qui il est, ce que signifient ses actions et son objectif. Bref, m\u00eame si un jeu de cartes n\u2019aura jamais la profondeur et la richesse th\u00e9matique d\u2019un film, d\u2019un roman ou m\u00eame d\u2019un jeu de r\u00f4le, il se construit quand m\u00eame un peu sur le m\u00eame mod\u00e8le. Lorsque les joueurs d\u2019<em>El Dorado<\/em> &#8211; c\u2019\u00e9tait le nom du premier brouillon &#8211; exploraient des ruines incas ou azt\u00e8ques, cette dimension narrative ne fonctionnait pas. Rien, en effet, ne venait justifier la premi\u00e8re partie de chaque manche, celle durant laquelle les joueurs pla\u00e7aient les cartes qui, petit \u00e0 petit, constituaient les grottes ou temples qu\u2019ils allaient ensuite explorer. Il y avait visiblement d&#8217;autres jeux de pirates.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Le deuxi\u00e8me th\u00e8me, et celui-ci fonctionnait, fut les pirates. C\u00f4t\u00e9 tr\u00e9sor, peu de changement, de l\u2019or, des joyaux, des artefacts magiques et des statuettes maudites, plus ou moins la m\u00eame chose sur les \u00eeles des Cara\u00efbes que dans les ruines incas. Le r\u00e9cit, en revanche, gagnait en coh\u00e9rence. Les pirates de <em>Treasure Islands<\/em> &#8211; nouveau nom du jeu &#8211; vont d\u2019abord enterrer leurs tr\u00e9sors sur des \u00eeles d\u00e9sertes. Ensuite, ils retournent chacun sur une \u00eele et prennent tous les tr\u00e9sors qu\u2019ils y trouvent. Jugeant, avec raison sans doute, que le monde de la piraterie \u00e9tait s\u00e9rieusement surexploit\u00e9, ils ont cherch\u00e9 autre chose, et ont pens\u00e9 \u00e0 des super-h\u00e9ros cambriolant des mus\u00e9es. Pourquoi pas, m\u00eame si c\u2019est un univers assez geek pour un jeu grand public. On retombait cependant sur la m\u00eame incoh\u00e9rence qu\u2019avec mon tout premier prototype am\u00e9rindien. Il fallait justifier non seulement le fait que des super h\u00e9ros collectionnent des \u0153uvres d\u2019art &#8211; on aurait sans doute pu trouver quelque chose &#8211; mais aussi qu\u2019ils commencent par aller eux-m\u00eames les mettre dans les mus\u00e9es, et l\u00e0, cela devenait plus compliqu\u00e9.<br \/>\nJ\u2019ai donc fait une quatri\u00e8me proposition, qui me semble fonctionner aussi bien que les pirates &#8211; les \u00e9cureuils. Tout comme les pirates planquent leurs tr\u00e9sors dans des \u00eeles, comme une sorte d&#8217;assurance retraite, avant d\u2019aller les r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer pour leurs vieux jours, les \u00e9cureuils passent l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 et l\u2019automne \u00e0 cacher de la nourriture dans des trous d\u2019arbre, pour aller la r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer l\u2019hiver venu, si tant est qu\u2019ils se souviennent ce qu\u2019ils ont mis ou. Dans un univers r\u00e9aliste, il peut arriver que l\u2019auteur ne puisse pas ajouter une carte, un effet, un pouvoir qui serait m\u00e9caniquement int\u00e9ressant, qui cr\u00e9erait des choix angoissants ou amusants pour les joueurs, parce qu\u2019il ne parvient pas \u00e0 lui donner une justification th\u00e9matique. Dans une course cycliste, une carte ne peut pas permettre d\u2019\u00e9changer sa position avec celle d\u2019un autre joueur. Dans une course de sorci\u00e8res sur des balais, pourquoi pas &#8211; c\u2019est magique. Dans un univers fantastique, m\u00eame fantastique \u00e0 la marge comme les explorateurs ou les pirates, tout est possible. Dans <em>El Dorado<\/em>, dans <em>Treasure Islands<\/em>, parmi les tr\u00e9sors oubli\u00e9s ou enterr\u00e9s se trouvaient des reliques aux pouvoirs magiques, et des statuettes maudites, introduisant des effets amusants. Je n\u2019aimais pas l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9cureuils magiques, et il a donc fallu trouver d\u2019autres justifications pour les cartes un peu bizarres &#8211; ce sont les pr\u00e9dateurs, aux effets imm\u00e9diats, et les baies et champignons, dont les effets peuvent durer plus longtemps. Cela tombe bien, l&#8217;illustrateur Cyril Bouquet, aime beaucoup dessiner les plantes et les animaux. J&#8217;ai expliqu\u00e9 que cela faisait longtemps que je voulais, dans un jeu, mettre une carte &#8220;vous avez perdu&#8221;, et que c&#8217;\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s amusant \u00e0 en jouer si le joueur qui a cette carte devant lui a des moyens r\u00e9els, mais pas trop faciles non plus, pour s&#8217;en d\u00e9barrasser. Bref, j&#8217;ai insist\u00e9, et le f\u00e9tiche \u00e0 l&#8217;oreille cass\u00e9e est devenue, chez les \u00e9cureuils, une amanite tue-mouches.<\/p>\n<p>Puisque l&#8217;on joue des cartes faces visibles et d&#8217;autres faces cach\u00e9es, <em>Nutz!<\/em> est tout \u00e0 la fois un jeu tactique et un jeu de bluff. Au moment de choisir un arbre pour y r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer ses provisions d&#8217;hiver, un \u00e9cureuil doit tenir compte de ce qu&#8217;il sait de son contenu, les cartes visibles, de ce qu&#8217;il ignore le plus souvent, les cartes cach\u00e9es, mais aussi des jetons lunes qui s&#8217;y trouvent, et du rang de l&#8217;arbre qui d\u00e9terminera l&#8217;ordre du tour pour l&#8217;ann\u00e9e suivante. Rien de bien compliqu\u00e9, mais des \u00e9l\u00e9ments suffisamment nombreux et vari\u00e9s pour permettre bien des choix, et quelques embrouilles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.trictrac.tv\/embed\/Nutz_de_la_partie?autoplay=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><em>Une partie de Nutz sur Tric Trac<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nutz!<\/em> est un jeu de cartes qui n&#8217;a rien de r\u00e9volutionnaire, et doit pas mal \u00e0 l&#8217;une de mes premi\u00e8res cr\u00e9ations, Corruption, mais c&#8217;est un jeu comme je les aime, simple, subtil (enfin j&#8217;esp\u00e8re) et assez m\u00e9chant.<br \/>\nIl nous rappelle que les \u00e9cureuils, qui ont aujourd&#8217;hui en occident une excellente image de marque, celle d\u2019animaux pr\u00e9voyants \u00e0 la crini\u00e8re flamboyante, ont longtemps eu une assez mauvaise r\u00e9putation. La tradition m\u00e9di\u00e9vale voyait en effet dans ces rongeurs des animaux diaboliques, paresseux, lubriques, avares et voleurs. Dans la mythologie nordique, l&#8217;\u00e9cureuil Ratatoskr r\u00e9pand insinuations et rumeurs et s\u00e8me la discorde parmi les occupants d&#8217;Yggdrasil, l&#8217;arbre du monde. This is probably the question I\u2019ve been asked the most often as a game designer, and it has become boring. My answer varies, in part because my practice does, but also because it\u2019s not always easy to distinguish one from the other. With Nuts, the case is clear, mechanics came first, as can be seen from the fact that the game had four successive settings, two of which, pirates and squirrels, were completely satisfying because they could give sense to most of the game systems.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Every game round is made of two consecutive phases. First, players add cards, sometimes face up, sometimes face down, to sets of three cards maximum. Even if a board game can never have the same thematic depth as a novel, a movie or even only a role playing game, it is still built on the same model. When my players friends were playing El Dorado, the name of my first iteration, and exploring inca or aztec ruins, the narrative didn\u2019t work. There was no way to give a meaning to the first phase of every round, during which players were playing the treasure cards they will take in the second phase. Looters do not enter the caves to place treasures before exploring them to get them back. The game was now called Treasure Islands, and pirates were first burying their treasures on the various islands, and then getting back to unearth them when planning for retirement. They thought, however, that the pirates theme was seriously overexploited and looked for something more original. Their first idea was about super heroes looting museums. Why not, even though super heroes might a bit too geeky a theme for a light family game. The problem, however, was the same as with my first setting. We had to find a rationale not only for super heroes collecting antiques &#8211; this could be done &#8211; but also for them to first place the pieces in the museums, and it soon became a bit convoluted.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That\u2019s why I suggested a fourth and completely different universe, squirrels, which works as well as pirates. Like pirates were first hiding treasures on the islands, as a kind of pension insurance, and take them back before retiring, squirrels spend summer and winter hiding food in hollow trees, and take it back in winter &#8211; if they can remember where it is. The problem with realistic settings is that the game designer is often blocked with a funny effect, an interesting ability, a challenging choice for which he can find no thematic justification. In a bicycle race, there\u2019s no possible rationale for swapping one\u2019s position with that of another player; in a witches on brooms race, why not &#8211; it\u2019s magic. In a fantasy world &#8211; even a marginally fantasy one, like explorers or pirates, almost everything is possible. Instant effects are predator animals, such as foxes or owls, while lasting effects are berries or mushrooms, depending whether the effect is mostly good or bad. Luckily, the artist, Cyril Bouquet, is really good at plants and animals. It has not always been so. In the Middle Ages, these rodents were seen as devilish, lazy, mean and lecherous animals. In the Norse mythology, the squirrel Ratatoskr runs up and down Yggdrasil, the tree of the world, spreading nasty rumours and insinuations. Both games were designed more or less simultaneously, and it&#8217;s clearly a coincidence. I bet we made the same logical reasoning starting from the idea of rows of cards played half face up and half face down. I&#8217;ll try to play it one of these days, if only to see which of our games plays better.
