He wanted to offer his beloved a special gift, to declare his love for her, but he didn’t know what to get her. This made him so sad that all he could do was to float, sobbing, in his pond. One night, when the moon was full, the frogs that shared his pond heard his cries of despair. “Oh, beautiful mandarin duck”, they asked him, “why are you crying?”. “I am sad”, he answered, ” because I am in love but I don’t know what gift to offer my sweetheart in order to properly declare my love to her”. “Why don’t you make her a beautiful bouquet of lotus flowers?”, suggested the frogs. “We will help you”. And the little frogs spent the rest of the night in a loony game of leapfrog, hopping from lily pad to lily pad, gathering the most beautiful lotus flowers from the pond, each one trying to outdo the other by creating the most beautiful bouquet of all for the mandarin duck’s beloved.

OK, it’s a bit of an artificial and pasted on theme….

Flower of the Lotus was one of my very first creations, and the first prototypes date from the late eighties. In these old times, I had been very impressed by David Parlett’s Hare and Tortoise, and I also wanted to design a game with simple rules, with a family, almost childish, theme, but with deep tactical subtleties. Thence, Flower of the Lotus is a very simple race game that lasts half an hour, but it is also a game with no luck at all. No Hares and carrots, No Tortoises and lettuces, but Frogs and water lilies.

Each player controls three frogs, who jump from one water lily to another and try to pick the nice lotus flowers, with their pastel colors, and gather them in bouquets. The blue lotus is much sought after, while the black lotus is supposed to bring bad luck. All the subtleness and depth of the game is due to the frog movement – they can jump one over another – and the bouquet making rules. The rules of this game are very simple, and can be easily explained to a seven or eight year old, but older players will also discover that the game has hidden depth and makes for many tactical choices.

A first edition of the game was published by Eurogames in 2003. It went oout of print and a new version, with a slightly shorter board, was published by Kluts in 2008, in a large children book modestly entitled “the 15 best boardgames in the world”.

China Moon
A game by Bruno Faidutti
Art by Vincent Dutrait (1986)
2 to 5 players – 30 minutes
Published by Eurogames (1996), Klutz (2008)
Boardgamegeek
