Publier un jeu de cartes dans une revue a deux principaux inconv\u00e9nients \u2013 ce n\u2019est jamais extr\u00eamement bien pay\u00e9 et les cartes ne sont pas imprim\u00e9es comme de vraies cartes \u00e0 jouer \u2013 mais, quand il s\u2019agit d\u2019une revue de bandes dessin\u00e9es, cela a en revanche un avantage extraordinaire, c\u2019est que l\u2019on peut \u00eatre s\u00fbr de la qualit\u00e9 et de l’originalit\u00e9 des illustrations.<\/p>\n

Mythos, qui para\u00eet dans le num\u00e9ro 200 de la revue Lanfeust Mag, voit s\u2019affronter les divinit\u00e9s de quelques grandes mythologies, et l\u2019\u00e9quipe de Lanfeust n\u2019a pas fait les choses \u00e0 moiti\u00e9, faisant appel \u00e0 des artistes diff\u00e9rents pour illustrer chacun des panth\u00e9ons. Steven Lejeune a dessin\u00e9 les dieux de la Gr\u00e8ce antique, Jo\u00ebl Jurion et Audrey Mitsuko ceux de l\u2019Inde, Philippe Fenech et Kmixe ceux de l\u2019\u00c9gypte ancienne, S\u00e9bastien Calveau ceux des vikings, Jo\u00ebl Liochon ceux des azt\u00e8ques, et enfin Daniela Dimat quelques uns des innombrables dieux du Japon. Je ne dirai pas quelle s\u00e9rie est ma pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e pour ne pas faire de jaloux. Le r\u00e9sultat est splendide \u00e0 la fois de vari\u00e9t\u00e9 et de coh\u00e9rence, et je me prends \u00e0 r\u00eaver d\u2019une belle \u00e9dition avec de jolies cartes \u2013 peut-\u00eatre en anglais, qui sait, si j\u2019arrive un jour \u00e0 convaincre un \u00e9diteur.<\/p>\n

Mythos n\u2019est qu\u2019\u00e0 moiti\u00e9 une nouveaut\u00e9, et c\u2019est m\u00eame peut-\u00eatre le tout premier jeu de cartes dont j\u2019ai eu l\u2019id\u00e9e. Ce n\u2019est gu\u00e8re plus qu\u2019une bataille, \u00e0 deux joueurs, dans laquelle j\u2019ai cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 introduire un zeste de tactique et de psychologie.<\/p>\n

Chacun des six plis d\u2019une manche se joue en deux temps, les deux adversaires jouant une deuxi\u00e8me carte apr\u00e8s que la premi\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e, et la force de chaque joueur \u00e9tant \u00e9gale la somme des puissances deux cartes. Si votre premi\u00e8re carte est bien plus forte que celle de votre adversaire, il n\u2019est sans doute pas n\u00e9cessaire d\u2019en jouer une deuxi\u00e8me aussi forte, votre adversaire devant logiquement renoncer \u00e0 remporter le pli pour \u00e9conomiser ses forces – \u00e0 moins, bien s\u00fbr, qu\u2019il ne fasse le m\u00eame raisonnement, pense que vous allez jouer petit pour conserver vos meilleures cartes et en profite pour mener une contre-attaque fulgurante. En outre, les cartes rapportant plus ou moins de points de victoire, certains plis peuvent \u00eatre plus int\u00e9ressants que d\u2019autres. Bien s\u00fbr, certaines cartes \u2013 pas trop, deux ou trois par joueur \u2013 ont des effets sp\u00e9ciaux qu\u2019il faut aussi prendre en compte.<\/p>\n

Le th\u00e8me mythologique s\u2019est rapidement impos\u00e9. Il permet en effet de construire des sets de douze cartes bien diff\u00e9rents, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s \u00e9quilibr\u00e9s, avec des effets assez th\u00e9matiques, bas\u00e9s sur les par\u00e8dres ou les attributs divins. Avec six mythologies, il y a quinze duels possibles, ce qui donne au jeu une grande vari\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Une premi\u00e8re version de Mythos, parue en 1999 dans la revue Sciences et Vie D\u00e9couvertes sous le nom de Combat des Dieux, ne comprenait que quatre mythologies, grecque, \u00e9gyptienne, viking et azt\u00e8que. En 2011, pour la revue japonaise Gamelink, j\u2019ai ajout\u00e9 les dieux hindous, tandis que Hayato Kisaragi et Nobuaki Takerube imaginaient un set japonais. Pour la troisi\u00e8me et tr\u00e8s belle version qui para\u00eet en 2016 dans Lanfeust Magazine, je me suis content\u00e9 de retravailler un peu les \u00e9quilibres du jeu et d\u2019ajouter quelques effets de cartes ici et l\u00e0.<\/p>\n

There are a few drawbacks to publishing a card in a magazine. The first is that it\u2019s usually not very well paid, and the second is that cards are not printed on professional cardstock. On the other hand, when it\u2019s a comics magazine, it has a major edge, one can be sure the graphics will be gorgeous.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mythos is published in the 200nd issue of the French comics magazine Lanfeust mag. It\u2019s a game about warring Gods, and the Lanfeust team did not do things by halves, hiring different artists to illustrate the different pantheons. Steven Lejeune drew the ancient Greek gods, Jo\u00ebl Jurion and Audrey Mitsuko the Hindu ones, Philippe Fenech and Kmixe the Egyptian ones, S\u00e9bastien Calveau the Viking ones, Jo\u00ebl Liochon the Aztec ones, and Daniela Dimat some of the countless Japanese gods. I won’t telle which set is my favorite. The result is gorgeous, both varied and consistent, and I hope someday there will be an edition with true game cards, may be by some US publisher \u2013 email me if interested.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mythos is not really new, and is based on what might have been my very first card game idea. It\u2019s the game of War, for two players, with some tactics and psychology added.<\/em><\/p>\n

Every round is made of six tricks, and each trick is played in two steps. Players play a first card, reveal it, then play a second one, and the total strength of a player is the sum of his two cards\u2019 values. So, if your first card is much higher than your opponent\u2019s one, you might think you don\u2019t need to play another strong one, since your opponent will probably give up this trick and save his strength \u2013 unless, of course, he makes the same reasoning, thinks that you will keep your best cards for later, and plans a swift counter-attack. Furthermore, some cards, usually low ones, score more points than other when winning tricks, and each player has two or three cards with challenging special effects.<\/em><\/p>\n

The mythological setting was obvious from the beginning. It allows for different and more or less balanced sets of twelve cards each, some of which have thematic effects based one gods\u2019 attributes. Six mythologies make for fifteen possible duels, which makes the game really varied.<\/em><\/p>\n

The first version of this game, published in 1999 in the French magazine Sciences & Vie D\u00e9couvertes, had only four different mythologies, Greek, Egyptian, Aztec and Viking. In 2011, for the Japanese magazine Gamelink, I added a Hindu set, while Hayato Kisaragi and Nobuaki Takerube designed a Japanese one. For this third version, I mostly fine-tuned the balance and added a few new and fun card effects.<\/em><\/p>\n
