C\u2019est au petit d\u00e9jeuner que j\u2019ai sympathis\u00e9 avec Eric Lang, que je n\u2019avais jusqu\u2019ici que crois\u00e9 rapidement sur quelques salons sans que nous ayons vraiment pris le temps de discuter. Bien \u00e9videmment, lorsque deux auteurs de jeux se rencontrent, ils parlent de jeux, de leurs projets, de leurs id\u00e9es\u2026 Je ne sais plus lequel d\u2019entre nous a, le premier, dit qu\u2019il r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissait \u00e0 un jeu fond\u00e9 sur le dilemme du prisonnier, mais toujours est-il que l\u2019autre a imm\u00e9diatement r\u00e9agi en disant &#8211; moi aussi !<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas le dilemme du prisonnier, tr\u00e8s utilis\u00e9 en \u00e9conomie notamment pour \u00e9tudier les choix commerciaux des entreprises en situation d\u2019oligopole, en voici la formulation classique par le math\u00e9maticien Albert Tucker, en 1950 :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Deux suspects sont arr\u00eat\u00e9s par la police. N\u2019ayant pas de preuves, les policiers les interrogent s\u00e9par\u00e9ment en leur faisant la m\u00eame offre. \u00ab Si tu d\u00e9nonces ton complice et qu&#8217;il ne te d\u00e9nonce pas, tu seras remis en libert\u00e9 et l&#8217;autre \u00e9copera de 10 ans de prison. Si tu le d\u00e9nonces et lui aussi te d\u00e9nonce, vous \u00e9coperez tous les deux de 5 ans de prison. Si personne ne d\u00e9nonce personne, vous aurez tous deux 6 mois de prison. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Chacun des prisonniers r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit de son c\u00f4t\u00e9 en consid\u00e9rant les deux cas possibles de r\u00e9action de son complice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u00ab S\u2019il me d\u00e9nonce :<br \/>\nSi je me tais, je ferai 10 ans de prison ;<br \/>\nMais si je le d\u00e9nonce, je ne ferai que 5 ans. \u00bb<br \/>\n\u00ab S\u2019il ne me d\u00e9nonce pas :<br \/>\nSi je me tais, je ferai 6 mois de prison ;<br \/>\nMais si je le d\u00e9nonce, je serai libre. \u00bb<br \/>\n\u00ab Quel que soit son choix, j&#8217;ai donc int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 le d\u00e9noncer. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Si chacun des complices fait ce raisonnement, les deux vont probablement choisir de se d\u00e9noncer mutuellement. Conform\u00e9ment \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9nonc\u00e9, ils \u00e9coperont d\u00e8s lors de 5 ans de prison chacun. Or, s&#8217;ils \u00e9taient tous deux rest\u00e9s silencieux, ils n&#8217;auraient \u00e9cop\u00e9 que de 6 mois chacun. Ainsi, lorsque chacun poursuit rationnellement son int\u00e9r\u00eat individuel, le r\u00e9sultat obtenu n&#8217;est pas le meilleur possible. Pour les math\u00e9maticiens, c&#8217;est un \u00e9quilibre de Nash mais pas un optimum de Pareto.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Du coup, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de nous y mettre ensemble et, apr\u00e8s quelques gribouillis sur la nappe de l\u2019h\u00f4tel Atlantic (je sais, c\u2019est absurde, mais il y a un h\u00f4tel Atlantic \u00e0 Essen), nous avions l\u2019\u00e9bauche d\u2019un jeu de cartes. \u00c0 chaque tour, deux joueurs doivent d\u00e9cider secr\u00e8tement s\u2019ils acceptent la moiti\u00e9 d\u2019un lot de cartes ou s\u2019ils en voulent la totalit\u00e9, \u00e9tant entendu que si les deux joueurs veulent tout, personne n\u2019a rien.<\/p>\n<p>Pour que le jeu ne soit pas trop r\u00e9p\u00e9titif, il \u00e9tait n\u00e9cessaire que, selon la situation, chacun puisse estimer l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat des diff\u00e9rentes cartes pour son partenaire \/ adversaire, et que cet int\u00e9r\u00eat soit variable d\u2019un tour \u00e0 l\u2019autre, rompant ainsi avec la sym\u00e9trie du dilemme originel. C\u2019est pour cela que nous avons imagin\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me de score original, dans lequel chacun ne compterait en fin de partie que les cartes des s\u00e9ries dont il a le plus et le moins. C\u2019est pour la m\u00eame raison, rendre le jeu moins r\u00e9p\u00e9titif, moins m\u00e9canique, que nous avons introduit un troisi\u00e8me choix, je ne veux qu\u2019une carte mais je la choisis d\u2019abord. Nous avons aussi essay\u00e9 d\u2019imaginer des partages impliquant plus de deux joueurs, mais cela fonctionnait mal. Pour le premier prototype, j\u2019avais utilis\u00e9 de jolis clipart animaliers r\u00e9cup\u00e9r\u00e9s sur internet, les m\u00eames que j\u2019entrevois r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement sur les prototypes code nombreux auteurs, et je racontais vaguement que les joueurs \u00e9taient propri\u00e9taires de zoos, comme dans Zooloretto, mais le th\u00e8me n\u2019\u00e9tait pas tr\u00e8s convaincant. Philippe des Palli\u00e8res a d\u2019abord pens\u00e9 \u00e0 des gamins se partageant des bonbons \u00e0 la r\u00e9cr\u00e9ation, puis \u00e0 des collectionneurs d\u2019objets un peu vintage faisant le tour des brocantes. C\u2019est ce th\u00e8me qui fut d\u2019abord retenu, et Tom Vuarchex r\u00e9alisa m\u00eame une tr\u00e8s jolie maquette au look tr\u00e8s sixties. Mais, bon, personne n\u2019\u00e9tant vraiment convaincu, nous avons refait un brain storming d\u2019o\u00f9 sont sorties encore d\u2019autres id\u00e9es. La m\u00e9canique du jeu, le choix entre le poing ferm\u00e9, la guerre, et la main tendue, la paix, faisait de \u00ab Guerre et Paix\u00a0\u00bb un titre \u00e9vident, et on envisagea des cartes avec des soldats des guerres napol\u00e9oniennes. L\u2019id\u00e9e du partage amena aussi \u00e0 des naufrag\u00e9s sur une \u00eele d\u00e9serte, puis \u00e0 une variante de la m\u00eame id\u00e9e, des naufrageurs allumant des feux pour attirer sur des rochers les navires pris dans la temp\u00eate. Dilemma \u00e9tait trop technique et sans lien avec la th\u00e9matique du jeu. Naufrageurs, ou son \u00e9quivalent anglais Shipwreckers, ne convenait pas car il nous fallait quelque chose d\u2019international. Nous avons pens\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques lieux c\u00e9l\u00e8bres pour avoir abrit\u00e9, ou avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 cens\u00e9 abriter, des naufrageurs. Nous avions trouv\u00e9 Sark, une petite \u00eele au large de Guernesey, Penmarch, en Bretagne, et Nag\u2019s Head, en Caroline du Nord, qui avait ma pr\u00e9f\u00e9rence. Ce sera finalement Dolor\u00e8s, cens\u00e9 \u00eatre le nom du navire pris dans la temp\u00eate, et qui a l\u2019avantage et l\u2019originalit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre international sans \u00eatre anglais.<\/p>\n<p>Une fois l&#8217;univers choisi, il fallait trouver un illustrateur. Tom, qui s\u2019\u00e9tait beaucoup amus\u00e9 avec les meubles et\u00a0 objets vintage des brocanteurs, n\u2019\u00e9tait gu\u00e8re attir\u00e9 par les naufrageurs. Je venais de d\u00e9couvrir les splendides illustrations de Raptor, et avan\u00e7ai le nom de Vincent Dutrait. Philippe fut d\u2019abord r\u00e9ticent, parce que la Cor\u00e9e est un peu loin et qu\u2019il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re travailler avec des personnes, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019auteurs ou d\u2019illustrateurs, qu\u2019il peut rencontrer physiquement. Simultan\u00e9ment, les deux participants au dilemme orientaient la fl\u00e8che vers l\u2019un des trois symboles, puis les deux cadrans \u00e9taient r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9s simultan\u00e9ment. Cela aurait co\u00fbt\u00e9 un peu cher \u00e0 fabriquer, et l\u2019\u00e9diteur nous demanda donc si l\u2019on pouvait remplacer ces cadrants par des cartes, portant les m\u00eames symboles. C\u2019\u00e9tait un peu moins pratique, mais cela fonctionnait tr\u00e8s bien aussi. D\u2019abord, bien s\u00fbr, elle ne demande aucun mat\u00e9riel. Ensuite, la rencontre du dilemme du prisonnier et de Pierre-Feuille-Ciseaux, un jeu qui m\u2019a toujours fascin\u00e9, a une certaine \u00e9l\u00e9gance. Enfin, comme je l\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 expliqu\u00e9 dans <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=3673\">un post pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent<\/a>, il nous a sembl\u00e9 que les choix des joueurs, du moins lors des premi\u00e8res parties, \u00e9taient un peu diff\u00e9rents, plus de guerre et moins de paix. Peut-\u00eatre le geste du bras tendu pousse-t-il \u00abnaturellement \u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019agressivit\u00e9, peut-\u00eatre le fait de devoir prendre la d\u00e9cision en un instant, sans pouvoir h\u00e9siter ni revenir en arri\u00e8re, nous pousse-t-il \u00e0 des choix plus risqu\u00e9s. En tout cas, cela a donn\u00e9 au jeu un peu plus de dynamisme et de nervosit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Pour le reste, le jeu a peu chang\u00e9. Il y a une famille de cartes de moins que dans les premi\u00e8res versions et les valeurs ont \u00e9t\u00e9 modifi\u00e9es. Au tout dernier moment, nous avons ajout\u00e9 quelques cartes action, baptis\u00e9es \u00ab\u00a0bouteille \u00e0 la mer\u00a0\u00bb, que Vincent s\u2019est amus\u00e9 \u00e0 dessiner \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re de parchemins. En combinant les id\u00e9es de Philippe et du nouveau Tom, celles d\u2019Eric et les miennes, nous sommes arriv\u00e9s \u00e0 neuf cartes, ce qui est clairement un peu trop dans une partie. Apr\u00e8s quelques marchandages (- 3 ! , &#8211; non 5 ! , &#8211; bon, allez, 4 ), nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 que la r\u00e8gle officielle serait d\u2019ajouter al\u00e9atoirement quatre des neuf bouteilles \u00e0 la mer dans le deck pour chaque partie.<\/p>\n<p>Dolor\u00e8s est ma premi\u00e8re collaboration avec Eric Lang, mais je peux d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 vous dire qu\u2019il y en aura d\u2019autres. At breakfast, I hit it off with Eric Lang, whom I had already met on various game events, but with whom I had never seriously talked so far, in part because we didn\u2019t seem to be working on the same kind of games. Of course, when two game designers meet, they talk of game design, their ideas, their regrets, their projects. I don\u2019t remember which one first told he would like to design a game based in the prisoner\u2019s dilemma, but the other one answered that he was thinking of it as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If you\u2019ve never heard of the prisoner\u2019s dilemma, which is frequently used in economics, especially when studying oligopolies, here is its seminal description by the mathematician Albert Tucker, in 1950 :<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Two suspects of a crime have been arrested by the police, but the policemen lack sufficient evidence to convict them. The police questions them in two different rooms, and they are both offered the same deal: \u201cif you betray your accomplice and he doesn\u2019t betray you, you\u2019ll be freed and he\u2019ll spent 10 years in jail. If you betray him and he betrays you, you\u2019ll both be jailed for 5 years. If you both remain silent, you\u2019ll both be jailed for only 6 months\u201d.<br \/>\nBoth prisoners think on it, each in his own cell, considering what might happen depending on what their accomplices will do.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>\u201cIf he tells on me:<br \/>\nIf I keep quiet, I\u2019ll spend 10 years in jail.<br \/>\nIf I tell on him, I\u2019ll do only 5 years.<br \/>\nIf he doesn\u2019t tell on me:<br \/>\nIf I keep quiet, I\u2019ll spend 6 months in jail<br \/>\nBut if I tell on him, I\u2019ll be free.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>If both prisoners rely on this same rationale, they will denounce each other, and will end being both jailed for 5 years. If they had both stayed silent, they could have been jailed for only 6 months. This shows that, if every actor rationally acts to maximize his satisfaction, the outcome is not the best possible. For those who had some maths, it is a Nash equilibrium but not a paretian optimum.\u00a0 <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>So we decided to work on it together and, after some scribbles on the Atlantic napkin \u2013no there is an Atlantic hotel in Essen, strange as it may seem \u00a0\u2013 we had a rough sketch for a card game. Every round involves two players, who must secretly decide if they accept half of a set of cards, or if they want all the cards. Of course, if everybody wants everything, no one gets anything.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In order for the game not to be repetitive, each player must be able to roughly estimate the value of each card for his opponent, and this value must vary from round to round, making the game less symmetrical than the original dilemma. This is why we designed a specific scoring system, where every player scores only the items of which he has the most and the fewest. For the same reason, making the game less pedestrian, we added a third choice, I want one card but I choose it first. We also tried to imagine dilemmas involving more than two players, but it didn\u2019t work well. Philippe des Palli\u00e8res played it at my 2014 ludopathic gathering and, a few weeks later, I visited his castle to finalize the deal and discuss what was still lacking \u2013 a theme.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Our game, so far named Dilemma, was a pure abstract mechanism. This setting was first decided for, and Tom Vuarchex even made a pretty mock-up with a plain sixties look. Unfortunately, no one else was really convinced by a graphic setting which lacked a clear storyline, so we had more brain stormings. The choice between the closed fist, war, and the open hand, peace, made for an obvious name \u2013 War and Peace \u2013 and we considered cards picturing soldiers from the Napoleonic wars. The idea of sharing the loot led to castaways, and then to a variation on the same idea, shipwreckers lighting fires on the rocky shore to lure ships lost in the storm. Dilemma was too technical, too factual, and didn\u2019t suggest the game theme. Shipwreckers sounded well, but Philippe wanted something international. We considered a few places known for having supposedly sheltered shipwreckers \u2013 a small Island near from Guernesey, Penmarch, in Britanny, and Nag\u2019s Head, in Nort Carolina, which had my preference. We finally went for Dolor\u00e8s, supposed to be the name of the ship lost in the storm, mostly because we liked the idea of a name that could be international without being in English.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The next step was to find an illustrator. Tom had had much fun making a mock-up with vintage furniture pictures, but was not really interested in shipwreckers. I suggested Vincent Dutrait, who had just finished working on Raptor. Philippe was first reluctant, because Vincent lives in Korea and he prefers to work with people he can actually meet, be they designers or illustrators. Simultaneously, both players involved in the dilemma had to point the arrow to one of the the three possible choices, Peace, Fight and First Pick. Then the two dials were revealed and the dilemma carried out. Since Philippe didn\u2019t want the game to be too expensive, he asked Eric and me if we could replace the dials with cards. It also worked, though it was bit cumbersome. Then someone \u2013 I don\u2019t remember who \u2013 thought of using rock-paper-scissors like hand gestures. Open hand means \u201clet\u2019s share the loot\u201d, closed fist means \u201cI want all the cards\u201d, raised thumb means \u201cI want first pick\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This was an elegant solution, using no component, and merging the prisoner\u2019s dilemma with a game which has always fascinated me, Rock-Paper-Scissors. As I have already explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=3673\">an earlier post<\/a>, this had unexpected effects on the players\u2019 decisions, at least in the first rounds. There were more fights and fewer peaceful agreements. I don\u2019t know if this is because handing one\u2019s fist at arm\u2019s length \u201cnaturally\u201d causes aggressive behaviors, or because having to decide at once, with no possibility of moving back, makes players take more risks. There is one type of items fewer than in the first versions, and the card values have been modified. The last development was adding a few action cards, called \u201cmessage in a bottle\u201d, which Vincent had great fun drawing like on parchment. Merging ideas from Philippe, from the new Tom, from Eric and from me, we ended with nine cards worth keeping, which was too many for the game balance. After some bargaining (3! \u2013 no, 5! \u2013 OK, 4!) the final rule is that four random\u00a0 \u201cmessage in a bottle\u201d cards are added to the deck for every game.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dolor\u00e8s is my fist co-design with Eric Lang, but stay tuned, since there will be more.
