Of course, I do this to promote the games, but there are other reasons why I wanted to highlight, and to learn more, about the work of game illustrators.

Though most boardgames illustrators have a website, these sites are usually just galleries showing samples of their work, with little or no discussion or explanation of their work, and I’ve always found this a bit strange. Well, Joshua Cappel, the illustrator of Kheops, with and about whom I’m talking today, doesn’t even have a website.

The status of boardgames illustration is ambiguous, as can be seen by the way illustrators are credited on game boxes. Most times, they are not credited on the box cover, only on the back and often in very small font. Sometimes, mostly with French publishers, the illustrator’s name is added next to the game designer’s one. Both solutions feel wrong to me. The first because it is unfair and because, at least wit some games, the graphics are an important part of the gaming experience, the second because it gives the wrong impression that a boardgames is, like a comic, a collaborative work between designer and illustrator, like in comics, which is not the case. The graphic work is always done afterwards, once the actual game is finished. I discussed this at length a few years ago in an older post and suggested, without success so far, a third way.

Many boardgame illustrators – but not all – are gamers. A few ones, and that’s the case of Josh Cappel, are even boardgame designers. We often meet at game conventions, we play games together, but we don’t really work together. Most publishers, once the publishing contract for a game has been signed, prefer to keep the designer aside of the discussions with the illustrator, and only reluctantly show a work in progress file every other month. I make do with it, but I strongly prefer when the publisher keeps the designer in the loop of most of the discussion with the illustrator, as it has been the case with Josh Cappel and White Goblin for Kheops (or with Sweet November and David Cochard for Waka Tanka). My experience is that, even when I take a very little part in the discussion, it can prevent some mistakes and speed up the work.

I discovered Josh Cappel’s work through his illustrations for two strategy games I really like and still occasionally play, Andrei Burago’s Conquest of the Fallen Lands and, most of all and much later, when his style was obviously more refined, Jay Cormier and Sen-Fong Lim’s Belfort. I instantly liked it because it looked so different from the various trends currently dominating boardgame illustration – Archetypal american fantasy, German Historical realism (think Michael Menzel) and French vaguely humorous and sometimes too technical style (think Naiiiade or Mathieu Leyssenne). Josh Cappel might not be technically as sophisticated as many French or German illustrators, but he really has a style of his own which makes the games he illustrates both nice and fun to look at. Since then, I had wanted to have a game illustrated by Josh Cappel, and I was really excited when Jonny, at White Goblin, told me that they had hired Josh to make the graphics on Kheops.

What I had not realized before is that, being also a game designer, Josh has a very specific approach of boardgames illustration, focusing as much on clarity and playability than on artistic content. In the end, he can act both as an art director and an illustrator.
To work on Kheops, he made his own prototype and played the game. He suggested cutting the corners of the tiles to make them easier to grasp, he decided to use different shapes on the tiles for instant and for scoring effects, he even designed the punchboards. Even more, as you’ll see below, when I asked him a few questions about his graphic work on Kheops, he insisted as much on this than on actual illustrations, and this makes me think there is some similarity between Josh’s popularity with boardgames publishers and mine.
Josh is certainly not a bad artist, but his « competitive advantage »is that he’s the best in taking care of gameplay requirements and suggesting components improvements. Was there anything special about it ?

Kheops is a re-vamping of an existing game, so that brings different challenges than creating a game’s art from scratch. On one hand you get the advantage of seeing which parts of the original visuals and components were effective and which weren’t. On the other hand it keeps you from being totally creative because your brain tends to use the original’s components as a template. Luckily with Kheops, the components are very much dictated by the game’s mechanical needs; you need triangular tiles with a specific topography of rooms and corridors, and you need a framework to hold them all. One key task here was to make sure that the board is as readable as possible during play and scoring. To accomplish this I raised the contrast between the background and the passageways, tuned the look of the icons so that scoring-related ones are distinct from in-game effects, and made the chambers round so that your eye registers them more easily than the angular ones in the original. Jonny at White Goblin also let me do a high-concept cover for the game which is mostly black, quite a change from the original’s “guy with a blueprint overseeing a work site” illustration. (Not that I’m slamming such covers… I’ve done a few of those myself, it seems that we gamers really like to imagine ourselves as grand planners!) White Goblin also always encourages me to create fun wooden components for their games, so I got to make a variety of workers instead of the abstract shapes of the original. The component solution I’m happiest about for Kheops is the truncated triangular tiles… the original came with a suction-cup wand that you used to pluck tiles out of the pyramid when you wanted to move or rotate them. I reasoned that we could clip the corners off those tiles and this would create a convenient gap for you to get a fingernail in and lift the tile without the wand. Plus, it gives our tiles an interesting shape, and makes them easier to pick up. Have you ever tried to pick up a bunch of triangular tiles?
