Espions et militaires sont \u00e9galement au rendez-vous car ce monde encore vierge rec\u00e8le bien des dangers et des secrets et, \u00e0 des milliers et des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres des plus proches journalistes, socialistes, \u00e9cologistes et autres emp\u00eacheurs de prospecter en rond, tous les coups sont permis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La m<\/strong><strong>\u00e9<\/strong><strong>canique :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tout \u00e0 la fois jeu de de majorit\u00e9, jeu de personnages et jeu d&#8217;exploration, Mission Plan\u00e8te Rouge fait appel aussi bien au bluff qu&#8217;\u00e0 la strat\u00e9gie. Pour affr\u00e9ter des navettes pour Mars, et y prendre le contr\u00f4le des zones o\u00f9 seront d\u00e9couverts les minerais les plus int\u00e9ressants, vous devrez faire le meilleur usage des pouvoirs de vos neuf personnages, tels le scientifique, qui fait de bien myst\u00e9rieuses d\u00e9couvertes, le saboteur, qui peut faire exploser une fus\u00e9e sur sa rampe de lancement, ou le pilote, qui peut modifier sa destination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Histoire du jeu :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En 2004, on a beaucoup parl\u00e9 des deux petits robots que la Nasa avait envoy\u00e9s sur Mars. On les a un peu oubli\u00e9s depuis mais ils y sont encore, et continuent \u00e0 nous envoyer des images, comme on peut le voir sur le site de la Nasa. Apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es durant lesquelles la science n&#8217;\u00e9tait qu&#8217;un objet de peur, et l&#8217;exploration spatiale semblait un luxe coupable, Mars semblait \u00eatre redevenu \u00e0 la mode. Il n&#8217;en a pas fallu plus \u00e0 Bruno Cathala et moi-m\u00eame pour avoir envie de faire un jeu sur l&#8217;exploration de Mars, voire sa future colonisation. Serge Laget et Thierry Gislette ont fait de m\u00eame. L&#8217;id\u00e9e \u00e9tait dans l&#8217;air, elle y revient peut \u00eatre aujourd&#8217;hui, en 2012,\u00a0 avec les premi\u00e8res images d&#8217;un nouveau robot \u00e0 l&#8217;allure de couteau suisse g\u00e9ant et d\u00e9ploy\u00e9,,la sonde Discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Nous envisage\u00e2mes un temps l&#8217;id\u00e9e d&#8217;un jeu de collaboration sur le th\u00e8me de la terraformation de Mars, avant de nous replier sur l&#8217;id\u00e9e plus classique d&#8217;une rivalit\u00e9 entre compagnies d\u00e9sireuses de s&#8217;approprier les pr\u00e9cieuses ressources de la plan\u00e8te. Aucun d&#8217;entre nous n&#8217;ayant encore commis de jeu de majorit\u00e9, pourtant un classique presque oblig\u00e9 du jeu allemand, cela nous semblait en effet une bonne occasion. Nous d\u00e9cid\u00e2mes rapidement que le jeu comprendrait deux syst\u00e8mes distincts, et que la rivalit\u00e9 entre les joueurs s&#8217;exercerait donc \u00e0 la fois dans la constitution des exp\u00e9ditions en partance pour Mars, et sur la plan\u00e8te elle m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>Il a fallu des mois, et d&#8217;innombrables remises \u00e0 plat de l&#8217;ensemble des syst\u00e8mes, avant de parvenir \u00e0 la version 7.7, celle qu&#8217;\u00e0 publi\u00e9e Asmod\u00e9e. Si le tout premier plateau \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 rond et rouge, il \u00e9tait couvert de petits hexagones, et la colonisation s&#8217;y faisait sous la forme de rang\u00e9es de pions encerclant peu \u00e0 peu des zones, un peu comme au Go. Il y eut ensuite plusieurs versions \u00e0 deux plateaux, un grand rouge pour Mars et un petit pour la Lune, moins riche en ressources mini\u00e8res mais plus rapide \u00e0 atteindre et pouvant servir de base interm\u00e9diaire. \u00c0 bord des navettes, on a longtemps plac\u00e9 des cartes personnages faces cach\u00e9es, mais le r\u00e9sultat \u00e9tait totalement chaotique. La version 6, celle que nous pr\u00e9sent\u00e2mes \u00e0 Essen 2004 ou elle suscita un certain int\u00e9r\u00eat, \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s proche du jeu publi\u00e9, mais il n&#8217;y avait qu&#8217;un set de cartes personnages, qui \u00e9taient choisies tour \u00e0 tour par les joueurs comme \u00e0 Citadelles. C&#8217;est cette version qui convainquit l&#8217;\u00e9quipe d&#8217;Asmod\u00e9e, mais nous opt\u00e2mes ensuite pour un autre syst\u00e8me de s\u00e9lection de personnage qui nous semblait mieux coller au jeu et ne donnait pas le sentiment de jouer \u00e0 Citadelles.<\/p>\n<p>Puisque nous partions du th\u00e8me, et voulions \u00eatre r\u00e9alistes, je d\u00e9cidais de me documenter un peu. Je commen\u00e7ais par quelques visites sur les sites web, fort nombreux, consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 la plan\u00e8te rouge et \u00e0 divers projets de colonisation plus ou moins farfelus. Alors que je n&#8217;avais plus gu\u00e8re lu de science fiction depuis bien longtemps, je me procurais aussi deux s\u00e9ries qui \u00e9taient souvent cit\u00e9es comme des classiques de la &#8220;litt\u00e9rature martienne&#8221; &#8211; Red Mars, Blue Mars et Green Mars de Kim Stanley Robinson, et Mars et Return to Mars de Ben Bova.<\/p>\n<p>La volumineuse saga de Kim Stanley Robinson est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement lou\u00e9e pour son r\u00e9alisme, pour le s\u00e9rieux de son arri\u00e8re plan scientifique. \u00c9tant assez ignare en ce domaine, je ne suis pas vrament capable d&#8217;en juger, mais la lecture donne en effet l&#8217;impression que l&#8217;auteur s&#8217;est bien document\u00e9 sur les aspects techniques de son sujet. C&#8217;est malheureusement tout ce que l&#8217;on peut trouver au cr\u00e9dit de ces pav\u00e9s lourds, ennuyeux et d&#8217;une incroyable pr\u00e9tention. S&#8217;il n&#8217;y avait que les aspects techniques, cela passerait encore, mais ils sont mis au service d&#8217;une esp\u00e8ce de socio-politique de bazar, un salmigondis de th\u00e9ories mal dig\u00e9r\u00e9es, une sorte d&#8217;\u00e9colo-marxisme qui finit dans un d\u00e9lire messianique, et est ass\u00e9n\u00e9 tout au long des trois tomes avec un imperturbable s\u00e9rieux.<\/p>\n<p>Les deux tomes de Ben Bova sont moins pr\u00e9tentieux, ce qui les rend d\u00e9j\u00e0 plus sympathiques, mais cet esp\u00e8ce de Loft Story martien n&#8217;apporte pas grand chose non plus \u00e0 la litt\u00e9rature. C&#8217;est en effet l&#8217;arch\u00e9type du roman politiquement correct, format\u00e9 avec soin pour les familles am\u00e9ricaines. Comme dans une \u00e9mission de t\u00e9l\u00e9-r\u00e9alit\u00e9, le casting est minutieusement \u00e9tudi\u00e9 pour repr\u00e9senter favorablement toutes les minorit\u00e9s, et la psychologie des participants suffisamment primaire pour qu&#8217;aucun lecteur ne risque de se trouver intimid\u00e9. Au cr\u00e9dit de l&#8217;auteur, on notera quand m\u00eame un style agr\u00e9able, un tiers-mondisme sympathique mais qui aurait pu \u00eatre plus subtil, et une intrigue habilement men\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Je me suis forc\u00e9 \u00e0 finir ces deux sagas, mais la litt\u00e9rature de science-fiction &#8220;s\u00e9rieuse&#8221; sur l&#8217;exploration ou la colonisation de Mars m&#8217;a sembl\u00e9 bien lourde et didactique. C&#8217;est l&#8217;\u00e9quipe d&#8217;Asmod\u00e9e qui a imagin\u00e9 de le situer dans le cadre uchronique du Steampunk. Le Steampunk est un univers d\u00e9cal\u00e9, une sorte de science fiction se d\u00e9roulant vers la fin du XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, comme si la r\u00e9volution industrielle avait permis la conqu\u00eate spatiale. \u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, le Steampunk martien connut son heure de gloire ludique avec le jeu de r\u00f4les Space 1889, qui rencontra un certain succ\u00e8s. L&#8217;univers de ce jeu \u00e9tait cependant plus fantastique et d\u00e9cal\u00e9 que celui du notre, puisque Mars y \u00e9tait d\u00e9crite comme on aurait pu l&#8217;imaginer \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque victorienne. l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re y \u00e9tait respirable, les canaux y \u00e9taient de vrais canaux creus\u00e9s par de vrais martiens, et les puissances europ\u00e9ennes s&#8217;y livraient \u00e0 de bonnes vieilles guerres coloniales \u00e0 l\u2019aide de navires volants, que ce soit entre elles ou contre des martiens aux allures de guerriers zulu.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019univers tout en gris et roux, avec de gigantesques machines crachant des nuages de vapeur, des hauts de forme et des zeppelins, n\u2019est d\u00e9nu\u00e9 ni d\u2019humour, ni d\u2019intelligence, comme on le voit par exemple dans le foisonnant Against the Day de Thomas Pynchon. Il est en outre une fantastique source d&#8217;inspiration pour les illustrateurs, par exemple dans le tr\u00e8s beau dessin anim\u00e9 de Hiyao Miyazaki, Le Ch\u00e2teau Ambulant &#8211; et bien s\u00fbr aussi dans les illustrations superbes de Mission Plan\u00e8te Rouge ou d&#8217;autres jeux plus r\u00e9cents situ\u00e9s dans cet univers, comme Wiraqocha, Planet Steam ou m\u00eame, dans une certaine mesure, Isla Dorada.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 les superbes illustrations de Christophe Madura, un mat\u00e9riel m\u00e9diocre, un prix trop \u00e9lev\u00e9, un th\u00e8me qui n\u2019\u00e9tait pas encore vraiment \u00e0 la mode tout cela a sans doute emp\u00each\u00e9 que les tr\u00e8s bonnes critiques de Mission: Plan\u00e8te Rouge se traduisent dans les chiffres de vente, et que le succ\u00e8s d\u2019estime devienne un succ\u00e8s commercial. The Paris world fair is the last place to be, and the masses marvel at the last technical achievements which are exhibited there. Meanwhile, the big industrial trusts, supported by their governements, are planning the next step &#8211; the conquest of Mars and the mining of the fantastic ores ain its subsoil.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Red Planet Mission, you control one of these big companies. You try to recruit the best scientists and astronauts, and to launch rockets in order to explore the planet and take control of the most promising places before anyone else comes here. Spies and armed forces are also required since this unexplored world is full of secrets and dangers and, many thousand kilometers away from the nearest journalists, socialists, ecologists and all such troublemakers, competition is played no holds barred.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The systems :<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Red Planet Mission is a majority game, a character selection game, and an exploration game, with a balanced mix between bluffing and strategy. In order to charter shuttles to Mars, and to take control of the regions where the most interesting minerals will be found, you&#8217;ll have to make the best use of your nine characters&#8217; powers. The scientist make mysterious discoveries, the saboteur can blow a rocket up before i leaves the launchpad, the pilot can change a shuttle&#8217;s destination, and so on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>History of the game :<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2004, there was much talk of the two small robot rovers sent on Mars by the Nasa. They have been forgotten since, but last news was that they are still wandering over there, as you can see on the Nasa website. After years during which science was mostly a cause for anguish, and space exploration seemed to be a shameful luxury, Mars was back in fashion. That was enough for Bruno Cathala and I to start working on a game about Mars exploration, and why kot Mars colonization. Serge Laget and Thierry Gislette started another Mars game. Mars was in the air &#8211; it&#8217;s back now,min 2012, with the first pictures from another Martian explorer robot, Discovery, which looks like a giant open Swiss knife.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We first considered a collaboration game about the terraformation of Mars, but soon opted for a more classical game about mining companies vying for the precious minerals to be found on the red planet. None of us had ever designed a majority game, which is a classic of german style game design, and it seemed a good oportunity. We opted for two different game systems, one for recruiting astronauts and sending rockets to Mars, and one, the majority game, involving the astronauts already on the planet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After monthes and monthes of testing different versions of the game, after starting it all over again a few times, we ended with version 7.7 &#8211; the one that was published by Asmod\u00e9e.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The first board was already red and circular, but it had a small hex grid on it, and colonization was made by circling zones with one&#8217;s pawns, Go like. Then there had been a few versions with two boards, a large red one for Mars and a small white one for the moon, which has less mineral ressources but is easier to reach and can be used as a step on the way to Mars. There has been a few versions in which character cards were placed face down on the shuttles, but the result was far too chaotic. At the 2004 Essen fair, many publishers showed some interest in our version 6, which was already very similar with the actual game, but had only one character deck, in which cards were chosen like in Citadels. Asmod\u00e9e was convinced by this version of the game, and we later changed the character drafting system for something that fitted better and felt less like Citadels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Since we started with the theme, and wanted to make something realistic, I decided to look for some serious documentation. I first browsed some of the many websites devoted to Mars exploration and to some more or less zany colonization projects. I had not read any science fiction book for quite long and ordered the two series that were most often quoted as classics of &#8220;martian litterature&#8221;, Red Mars, Blue Mars and Green Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson, and Mars and Return to Mars by Ben Bova.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Kim Robinson&#8217;s heavy saga is often praised for its realism, for its serious scientific background. I&#8217;m not competent in this matter, and therefore cannot really judge it on this, but at least it feels as if the author seriously studied the technical aspects of the question. That&#8217;s the only positive thing in these long, heavy and pretentious books. Unfortunately, Kim Robinson&#8217;s technical competence is used as a support for a social and political hodgepodge, a mish mash of ill-digested theories, a kind of ecolo-marxism that ends in a delirious messianism, and is regularly and systematically forced upon the reader with boring and unruffled seriousness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Being far less pretentious, the two tomes of ben Bova make for a more pleasant reading, but this martian big brother adds little to litterature. It is a well written politically correct novel, carefully formatted for US families. Like in a reality show, the casting is designed to give a positive picture of all minorities, and the psychology of the characters simple enough to prevent any reader to be intimidated. The author can however be given credit for his clear style, for his nice, if not always subtle, third-world support, and for a well designed plot. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I forced myself to read these sagas till the end, and my overall impression is that the litterature about exploring and colonizing Mars is heavy and didactic. All this was far from the humorous wit of Frederic Brown od the poetic subtleness of Ray Bradbury, whose books could unfortunately not be of any help in designing this game. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the game Bruno and I designed, the action was taking place in the near future, around 2050 and not 1880. The Asmod\u00e9e team moved it in the uchronic world of Steampunk. Steampunk is an alternative universe, a kind of science fiction in a victorian world, as if the industrial revolution directly led to space exploration, in world of steam power and zeppelins. In the late eighties, Martian Steampunk was popular among gamers, mostly due to the role playing game Space 1889, which was a minor hit. The Space 1889 Mars was even more fantastic than our, since it was Mars like victorian times scientists could have imagined it. In French, a vasistas is a small window, so the Great Northern Plains became the Small Northern Window.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The grey and russet steampunk world, with gigantic rusty machines spitting dark smoke clouds, with businessmen in top hats and british explorers with pith helmets aboard giant zeppelins doesnt seem to be lacking in wit and humor, as for example in Thomas Pynchon\u2019s Against the Day. It has also been a source of inspiration for graphic artists, as you can see in the nice anime movie by Hiyao Miyazaki, Howl&#8217;s Moving Castle &#8211; and of course in the great illustrations of Mission : Red Planet and more recent steampunk games, such as Wiraqocha, Planet Steam or even Isla Dorada.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Christophe Madura\u2019s graphics were gorgeous, but the components were sub-par, the price too high, and the Steampunk setting was not as popular as it has become since. As a result, even when it got critics praise on all the boardgames websites, it didn\u2019t sell well in the US and it didn\u2019t sell at all in France.
