Les r\u00e8gles n\u2019ont jamais beaucoup vari\u00e9. Dans certaines versions, l\u2019\u00e9diteur a introduit une r\u00e8gle pour trancher les \u00e9galit\u00e9s en faveur du joueur le plus riche. Dans d\u2019autres, celles o\u00f9 j\u2019ai plus ou moins tout contr\u00f4l\u00e9 jusqu\u2019au bout, rien n\u2019est pr\u00e9vu et les ex-\u00e6quo sont tous deux vainqueurs. Cela ne change de toute fa\u00e7on pas grand chose.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9cemment, lors d\u2019une discussion avec quelques autres auteurs de jeux, nous nous sommes rendus compte que nous avions tous, assez r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, ce m\u00eame petit d\u00e9saccord avec nos \u00e9diteurs. Les auteurs ne voient pas la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019introduire une r\u00e8gle suppl\u00e9mentaire pour une situation qui se produit assez rarement, qui ne pose pas vraiment probl\u00e8me et qui est m\u00eame plut\u00f4t amusante. Les \u00e9diteurs craignent, \u00e0 tort, que les joueurs ne se sentent frustr\u00e9s par l\u2019absence de vainqueur et veulent donc introduire une r\u00e8gle, voire plusieurs, pour d\u00e9partager les ex-\u00e6quo, comme si l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 \u00e9tait un bug qu\u2019il faut \u00e9viter \u00e0 tout prix.<\/p>\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr, il y a des jeux dans lesquels une telle r\u00e8gle est utile. Ce sont notamment ceux o\u00f9, l\u2019\u00e9chelle de score \u00e9tant assez r\u00e9duite, les \u00e9galit\u00e9s sont fr\u00e9quentes. Ce serait absurde dans bien d\u2019autres jeux, mais c\u2019est int\u00e9ressant dans Draco car les \u00e9galit\u00e9s sont fr\u00e9quentes, on peut les anticiper, et il est possible \u00e0 un joueur malin de se d\u00e9brouiller pour faire marquer des points \u00e0 un autre. Cette r\u00e8gle amusante donne donc \u00e0 un joueur distanc\u00e9 une petite chance de remporter la victoire s\u2019il joue subtilement.<br \/>\nDans <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=4665\">Warehouse 51<\/a>, un m\u00e9canisme de d\u00e9partage est int\u00e9gr\u00e9 au jeu, puisqu\u2019une carte, le Miroir aux Huit Mains, fait remporter toutes les \u00e9galit\u00e9s, y compris pour la victoire finale, et une autre, la Tunique de Nessus, les fait toutes perdre. Cela ne marche pas toujours, puisqu\u2019il arrive qu\u2019aucun des ex-\u00e6quo n\u2019ait une de ces cartes, mais c\u2019est \u00e9l\u00e9gant et amusant.<br \/>\nJe me rappelle aussi un prototype d\u2019Aaron Weissblum sur le th\u00e8me du costume masculin, jou\u00e9 il y a une quinzaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Je n\u2019ai plus le moindre souvenir des m\u00e9canismes principaux du jeu, mais je sais qu\u2019en cas d\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 le vainqueur \u00e9tait celui avec la plus belle cravate. En anglais, trancher une \u00e9galit\u00e9, c&#8217;est briser une cravate; il est donc logique que ties break ties.<\/p>\n<p>Dans ces trois cas, la r\u00e8gle de d\u00e9partage a un sens &#8211; un sens m\u00e9canique dans Draco &amp; Co, un sens th\u00e9matique dans le jeu d\u2019Aaron, et les deux dans Warehouse 51. Dans la plupart des jeux cependant, la r\u00e8gle servant \u00e0 d\u00e9partager les ex-\u00e6quo semble tomber du ciel, sans v\u00e9ritable lien avec la logique du jeu, et n\u2019apporte absolument rien au d\u00e9roulement du jeu. Je suis en train de relire les r\u00e8gles de la nouvelle \u00e9dition fran\u00e7aise de <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=504\">Diamant<\/a>, et ait \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris de d\u00e9couvrir une r\u00e8gle tranchant en faveur du joueur ayant le plus de reliques &#8211; r\u00e8gle qui \u00e9tait en fait d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sente dans l\u2019\u00e9dition am\u00e9ricaine, Incan Gold, mais qui ne vient pas de moi et probablement pas d\u2019Alan. \u00ab\u00a0Pourquoi pas ?\u00a0\u00bb, me dira-t-on,\u00a0 \u00e0 quoi je r\u00e9pondrai \u00ab\u00a0 Pourquoi ?\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai de vagues souvenirs de jeux &#8211; pas les miens, heureusement &#8211; dans lesquels deux, trois voire quatre r\u00e8gles successives font qu\u2019il est virtuellement impossible de finir sur une \u00e9galit\u00e9. Les \u00e9diteurs qui insistent pour qu\u2019il soit toujours possible de d\u00e9terminer un vainqueur se trompent en pensant que les joueurs risquent de se sentir frustr\u00e9s par l\u2019absence de victoire. Les \u00e9galit\u00e9s, lorsqu\u2019elles ne sont pas trop fr\u00e9quentes, sont au contraire des moments amusants et un peu ironiques. Les ex-\u00e6quo se serrent d\u2019ailleurs symboliquement la main.<\/p>\n<p>Montaigne a \u00e9crit qu\u2019\u00e0 la chasse, le plaisir n\u2019est pas dans la prise mais dans la chasse. Une victoire ex-\u00e6quo, ce n\u2019est peut-\u00eatre pas vraiment une victoire, mais on s\u2019en souvient comme d\u2019une belle partie, que l\u2019on a bien jou\u00e9, que l\u2019on a failli gagner et qui ne s\u2019est pas tout \u00e0 fait termin\u00e9e comme les autres. There will be more. The rules never changed much. In some versions of the game, the publisher added a tie-breaking rule, in favor of the richest player. In other versions, mostly the ones I more or less controlled and checked till the end, the don\u2019t ere\u2019s no tie breaker and tied players share the victory. I don\u2019t really mind. It\u2019s not a big deal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Recently, when discussing with fellow game designers, we noticed that most of us had already had this same small disagreement with various publishers. Game designers don\u2019t see the point in adding a special rule for what we consider a rare, fun and not really problematic situation. Publishers wrongly believe that players might find the absence of a clear winner frustrating and want to add a rule, and sometimes even two or three, as if ties were a bug and needed a patch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Of course, there are a few games in which a tie breaker is useful, or even necessary, mostly games with a very short point scale and therefore frequent ties. Tied players are out of the game, and the next highest score wins. In most games, it would be just stupid, but in this one it makes sense because ties are frequent and can be anticipated, and because a clever player can manage to have another one score a few points. The game was about men\u2019s suits. The only thing I remember about its rules is that ties broke ties.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In these three cases, the tie breaker makes sense. It makes mechanical sense in Draco &amp; Co, thematically sense in Aaron\u2019s game, and both senses in Warehouse 51. In most games, however, the tie-breaking rules feels like just out of nowhere, not consistent with the game\u2019s inner logic, and doesn\u2019t add anything interesting. I\u2019m now proof-reading the rules for the next French edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=504\">Diamant<\/a>, and I was surprised to find a tie-breaker, the most artifacts. This rule is actually already in the US edition of the game, Incan Gold, but I\u2019m pretty sure I didn\u2019t add it, and I don\u2019t think Alan did. And if someone says \u00ab\u00a0why not? \u00a0\u00bb, I will just answer \u00ab\u00a0why?\u00a0\u00bb<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I remember a few games &#8211; none of mine, I think &#8211; with two, three or may be even four successive tie-breakers, making it virtually impossible for the game to end in a tie. Publishers who insist on having a winner in every game are wrong when they assume that players will be frustrated if there are more than one. Ties, providing they don\u2019t happen too often, are fun and even ironic moments. Tied players usually shake hands and smile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Montaigne wrote that the pleasure of hunting doesn\u2019t lie in the catch but in the hunt. A tied victory might not be a true victory, but it is usually remembered as a tense game, a game one\u00a0played well and almost won, and which ended in a fun and different way. this is far less frustrating than a victory or defeat due to tie-breaker coming out of nowhere, and sometimes found in the rule book after scores had been settled.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Il y a eu plusieurs \u00e9ditions de Citadelles, il y en aura encore.
