In turn, player place tiles – rooms and corridors – and pawns – workers, priests, mummy and even pharaoh – on the pyramid building site. Of course, some tiles have special features, like sarcophagi or curses. There are even rumors of rotating corridors and secret networks.
When the pyramid is built, the player controlling the longest networks is named Pharaoh’s architect, while his rival is fed to the crocodiles. Yes, you may already have heard this in some other game.

History of the game

Serge and I have been toying with tile laying and network systems for quite long, even before our first common design, Mystery of the Abbey, was published. This made for Castle, even when it has cards instead of tiles and no real network. This made forSpace Station Argo, which was due to be published by FFG and is now looking for another publisher. This made for Pyramidour cursed game, which was to be published by a publisher who went out of business a few months too early – Eurogames – and was published by a publisher who went out of business a few months later, Tilsit. Talk about curses…

Why build an Egyptian pyramid? The main reason was we thought there were already too many games with square and hexagonal tiles, and not that many with triangular ones, so there may be new ideas to explore there. And, of course, triangular tiles led to triangular board, and therefore to a pyramid. Since a pyramid is supposed to have mummies, secret chambers, moving walls and Pharao’s curses, all good thematic elements in a game, we could not imagine any other setting. Of course, some German designers might make pyramids of penguins on the ice floe, but a pyramid of stone in the desert definitely looks more serious and consistent..

Of course, Egypt is not the most original setting for a boardgame, but at least we are building a true pharaoh’s pyramid, sober and classical, and not some nouveau riche palace for a decadent queen. And if you think we stole the idea of rival egyptian architects from Ludovic Maublanc and Bruno Cathala, have a look at the picture here over, which proves it was the other way round. It shows Ludovic, in 2002, playing a prototype of Kheops at the ludopathic gathering.

Marcel-André Casasola-Merkle et Emanuel Ornella jouant à Kheops.
Marcel-André Casasola-Merkle and Emanuel Ornella playing Kheops.

Kheops was a great game, both tactical and strategic depth, with original game systems and a really strong theme – much more than simply a triangular Carcassonne.
