For various reasons, which are always easy to figure out after the fact, it was a near flop. The mix between a German-style majority game and an American- style interactive card game, something that is now commonplace, was then still a bit disturbing. The steampunk setting, chosen by the publisher, was still a bit too geeky. I must also admit that, despite great graphics by Christophe Madura, the edition was mediocre, with excessively glossy paper, sticky cardstock, and badly glued cardboard. Despite some rave reviews, the French edition of Mission : Planète Rouge didn’t sell, and the US Mission: Red Planet didn’t do much better. But two years later used copies of the game were selling at top dollar. Though few people had actually played the game, it was being called a classic on gamers’ websites such as BoardGameGeek, and it was often compared with my older Citadels. As there are eight characters in Citadels, there are nine in Mission: Red Planet: Recruiter, Explorer, Scientist, Secret Agent, Saboteur, Femme Fatale, Travel Agent, Soldier and Pilot. But it’s not a city-building game, it’s a majority game, in which players send astronauts to Mars in order to seize the valuable natural resources of a planet that has just opened up for mining and colonization.

A nearly final prototype

At the 2013 Essen fair, I was having a casual talk with John Grams of Fantasy Flight Games. He asked me if Bruno and I had got our rights on Mission: Red Planet back, and if we would be interested in a new edition. He hadn’t actually played the game, in fact didn’t really know the game, but some of his US resellers had inquired about it and suggested it would be a great idea to republish it. Of course, neither of us could miss the opportunity -,especially not Bruno Cathala, who had not yet worked with Fantasy Flight.

Then everything happened very fast.
In summer 2014, I spent a few days at FFG headquarters in Minnesota, where Steve Kimball took charge of the development of Mission: Red Planet. I wish I could always work with such an efficient developer. The basic system of the game stayed unchanged, the only important new feature being the addition of the moon Phobos, from which paratroopers can be airdropped anywhere on Mars. But every detail of the game, every mission, character or discovery card was reconsidered, retested and fine tuned to make the game richer and better balanced while keeping its rhythm smooth and light. After a few months and long e-mail discussions between Bruno, Steven and I, we had a new version of the game with a brand new map of Mars and half of the mission and discovery cards had been replaced or redesigned.

The game now supports up to six players. There’s even a two players variant, but since it’s Bruno Cathala’s specialty, I trust him on it and didn’t even playtest it. The very last change, a few days before the files went to the printer, was suggested by a playtester – invert the numerical order of the characters, so that they can be counted down from 9 to 1 instead of 1 to 9. I’m still amazed none of us had this idea earlier.

The setting is still steampunk, but Andrew Bosley’s art for Fantasy Flight Games is very different from Christophe Madura’s for Asmodée. It’s much lighter, more like European comics, all in beige and red shades. I love it, and I’m eager to get the final product.

I’ve only one minor regret: the game’s name. I’ve always found Mission : Red Planet a bit ridiculous, and would have liked the game to be called simply Red Planet or even Mars. Anyway, the game was already well known with its old name and it wasn’t possible to change it now. So Mission : Red Planet is back. At the back of the box, the publisher’s blurb says that this is the definitive version of a classic, and it might very well be true.

We started working on this new version of Mission: Red Planet when I had just written my article about postcolonialism and boardgames. This game about rivalries in the exploitation of the natural resources of a far away and supposedly empty recently colonized planet could also have been a good illustration for it, and I just renamed Native Resistance, one of the discovery cards that eliminates a few astronauts from the planet. When I wrote about postcolonial Catan I didn’t think this blogpost would set off such a strong debate. It gets now more hits every day than the whole rest of my website, and it looks like I’ll have to find a politically correct justification for the theme of all my future new games. That’s relatively easy with Mission: Red Planet, but it will be much harder for the game that will probably be my next announcement.

Mission : Red Planet
A game by Bruno Faidutti & Bruno Cathala
Graphics by Andrew Bosley
2 to 6 players – 60 minutes
Published by Fantasy Flight Games (2015)
 Boardgamegeek
The announcement at FFG

A four players game in progress
