Le chaos de la mythologie grecque, cousin du Tohu Bohu biblique, est l\u2019\u00e9tat primordial du monde, qui h\u00e9site selon les descriptions entre le vide et le d\u00e9sordre, et qui se caract\u00e9rise d\u2019abord par l\u2019absence de forme. Comme ils l\u2019ont fait avec le jeu, les math\u00e9maticiens ont recycl\u00e9 le mot chaos pour lui donner un sens un peu diff\u00e9rent. Le chaos des math\u00e9maticiens n\u2019est jamais primordial, puisqu\u2019il r\u00e9sulte des interactions entre des syst\u00e8mes pr\u00e9existants.. En math\u00e9matique, un syst\u00e8me chaotique est d\u00e9terministe en principe mais impr\u00e9visible en pratique du fait de la complexit\u00e9 des interactions entre ses \u00e9l\u00e9ments. Un jeu hasardeux, comme un jeu chaotique, est impr\u00e9visible, mais ils ne le sont pas pour les m\u00eames raisons, ce qui entra\u00eene une exp\u00e9rience tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rente pour les joueurs. On subit un jeu de hasard, on essaie de contr\u00f4ler un jeu chaotique, et c\u2019est la r\u00e9sultante de toutes ces tentatives de prise de contr\u00f4le et de la complexit\u00e9 du jeu qui le rend impr\u00e9visible. Bref, dans un monde \u00e9puisant parce que sans ordre visible, le jeu serait notre petit moment d\u2019ordre et de repos. Dans Mascarade, c\u2019est le fait que les joueurs sont tr\u00e8s souvent \u00ab\u00a0largu\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb, ne sachant plus tr\u00e8s bien o\u00f9 sont les diff\u00e9rents personnages, qui rend le jeu amusant &#8211; mais c\u2019est le fait que les m\u00eames joueurs peuvent tenter de suivre les mouvements des personnages, et parfois y parviennent, qui rend le jeu int\u00e9ressant. M\u00eame le plus chaotique des jeux s\u2019av\u00e8re, en fin de compte, bien moins incontr\u00f4lable et &#8211; surtout &#8211; incompr\u00e9hensible que le monde r\u00e9el.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ajouterai que le caract\u00e8re angoissant du monde r\u00e9el, qui est sans doute la principale raison pour laquelle on appr\u00e9cie les jeux, est li\u00e9 \u00e0 notre exp\u00e9rience non seulement du chaos, mais aussi de la vanit\u00e9 (on est encore plus ou moins chez Pascal) et de la contingence (on saute chez Sartre). La vanit\u00e9 d\u2019une vie sans &#8220;but du jeu&#8221; &#8211; comme le montre l\u2019\u00e9chec \u00e0 faire du sexe ou du dollar am\u00e9ricain un syst\u00e8me de points de victoire universellement accept\u00e9. La contingence qui nous noie sous les informations inutiles parce que irrelevantes, et qui est absente des jeux comme des livres. En ce sens, mes jeux chaotiques et psychologiques sont sans doute plus proches du r\u00e9el que des jeux plus froids et plus strat\u00e9giques &#8211; mais cela ne m\u2019emp\u00eache pas de consid\u00e9rer que le charme principal du jeu vient de ce que ce n\u2019est pas la vie. Never mind, I&#8217;m far too lazy to rewrite it&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>In game reviews or articles about games, I&#8217;m often referred to as a designer of &#8220;chaotic games, or even as the &#8220;master of chaos&#8221;. I&#8217;ve never disputed this oxymoron, but I&#8217;ve also never really rubber stamped it. it might be time to discuss it, especially since the very idea of a &#8220;chaotic game&#8221; seems to contradict my usual and vaguely pascalian justification of gaming as an orderly and graspable diversion in a world which is neither one nor the other.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is some ambiguity in the adjective &#8220;chaotic&#8221;. The Chaos, in Greek mythos, is the equivalent of the biblical Tohu wa Bohu, the primordial state of the world, characterized by its formlessness, and whose description hesitates between void and disorder. As it happened with game, mathematicians recycled the world chaos in their theories, giving it a somewhat different meaning. The mathematical chaos cannot be primordial, since it results from the ungraspable convolutions of preexisting systems. A chaotic game and a game of chance are both unpredictable, but for very different reasons, and they generate very different gaming experiences. Trying to control a game of chance is stupid and delusory, when trying &#8211; usually vainly &#8211; to control a chaotic game is the very essence of the game. What makes the game uncontrollable is the fact that all players are trying at the same time to control its many interlocked and convoluted elements. In a tiring and chaotic world, games are small moments of rest and order. In Mascarade, the fact that players are often &#8220;lost&#8221;, not knowing who is whom, is what makes the game fun, but on the other hand, the fact that they are never clueless, that they can try to follow the moves of some cards, and sometimes indeed manage to do it, is what makes it challenging. When all is said and done, even the most chaotic game is far less incomprehensible and uncontrollable than real life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The distressingness of the real world, which is probably the main reason why people play games, is caused by our experience not only of everyday chaos, but also of vanity (we&#8217;re still more or less with Pascal) and contigency (here we jump to Sartre). The vanity of a life with no clear and unquestionable goal &#8211; even sex or the US dollar are not universally accepted victory point systems. The universal contigency which overburdens us in pointless details &#8211; and which doesn&#8217;t exist in books or games. I&#8217;d rather be described as the designer of games in which players cannot hide themselves behind the rules, games that are eventually played with &#8211; and against &#8211; players and not against pawns and cards.
