Le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est en effet bien peu romantique, et cela le distingue de bien d\u2019autres formes culturelles, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse du livre, du cin\u00e9ma, de la peinture, de la musique, mais aussi du jeu de r\u00f4les, et dans une certaine mesure des jeux en ligne et des jeux d\u2019argent.<\/p>\n<p>Le joueur n\u2019a pas d\u2019amis, ni d\u2019\u00e9tats d\u2019\u00e2me, il n\u2019a a que des objectifs et des int\u00e9r\u00eats. Il ne s\u2019apitoie pas sur telle figurine qui n\u2019est pas parvenu \u00e0 prendre pied sur Omaha Beach, ou sur telle autre qui s\u2019est fait d\u00e9vorer par les zombies. Il la remet dans sa \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9serve\u00a0\u00bb, pour la ressortir \u00e0 l\u2019occasion repr\u00e9sentant un autre personnage tout aussi anonyme.<br \/>\nCela n\u2019a bien s\u00fbr rien d\u2019\u00e9tonnant si l\u2019on voit dans le jeu un m\u00e9canisme abstrait, sans \u00e2me, et dans les r\u00e8gles une simple m\u00e9taphore destin\u00e9e \u00e0 en faciliter l\u2019explication, comme semblable \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nonc\u00e9 d\u2019un probl\u00e8me de robinet. Ce n\u2019est cependant pas le cas de tous les jeux, en tout cas pas de tous les miens, mais m\u00eame les jeux au th\u00e8me fort comme mon Myst\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019Abbaye, m\u00eame les jeux au th\u00e8me triste comme les jeux de guerre, ne suscitent pas chez les joueurs de r\u00e9elle \u00e9motion.<\/p>\n<p>Les contraintes mat\u00e9rielles de leur conception et de leur r\u00e9alisation, la limitation \u00e0 l\u2019usage de cartes, de d\u00e9s, de pions, pour render compete d\u2019histoires complexes, tout cela tend \u00e0 faire des jeux, et tout particuli\u00e8rement des jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, des syst\u00e8mes tr\u00e8s simplifi\u00e9s dont les \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont, au sens propre du terme, objectiv\u00e9s. On ne s\u2019attache pas \u00e0 un pion de bois ou de plastique comme \u00e0 un personnage de roman, de film, ou m\u00eame de jeu de r\u00f4le, dont il n\u2019a pas la profondeur. C\u2019est cette objectivation, cette simplification, plus que le caract\u00e8re relativement abstrait, des jeux, qui contraint l\u2019auteur de jeu \u00e0 faire vivre son th\u00e8me \u00e0 coup de clins d\u2019\u0153il l\u00e0 o\u00f9 l\u2019\u00e9crivain ou le cin\u00e9aste recourent au r\u00e9cit et le concepteur de jeux videos \u00e0 la simulation, et qui fait du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 le moins romantique des loisirs.<\/p>\n<p>Pour autant, nos jeux ne sont pas d\u00e9nu\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9motion. Boardgames are definitely les romantic than books, movies or paintings, and even less than role playing games, gambling and most online games. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The gamer has no friends, no conscience, only goals and interests. He doesn\u2019t feel any pity for a miniature that couldn\u2019t land at Omaha Beach or was eaten by zombies. He just puts it back in his \u00ab\u00a0reserve\u00a0\u00bb, and takes it out later to represent some other anonymous figure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This isn\u2019t surprising if you think that games are just soulless mechanisms, and theme a metaphor used to make explanations easier, like water taps in a math problem. Some games are like this, but not all, and certainly not all of mine. Nevertheless, I\u2019ve never seen a player cry or express a strong story related emotion even in a game with a strong theme, like my Mystery of the Abbey, or with a really sad theme, like wargames.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Because of the strong constraints of board game design and production, of the limitation mostly to cards, dice and pawns to create complex storylines, boardgames are very simplified systems in which all elements are, strictly speaking, objectified. One doesn\u2019t feel the same empathy with a simple wooden or plastic figure, no matter how nice it looks, as with a much deeper novel, movie or role playing character. This objectification, this simplification, and the relatively abstract character of boardgames, forces the game designer to build his theme using nods and winks where the writer or moviemaker uses storytelling and some vied game designers simulation. That\u2019s probably why boardgames are definitely not romantic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On the other hand, our board and card games are definitely not devoid of emotions.
