Les lumi\u00e8res, c&#8217;est joli et sympa; les nations, c&#8217;est moche, b\u00eate et m\u00e9chant.<br \/>\nJe devrais \u00eatre rassur\u00e9 en feuilletant les programmes et les manuels scolaires de lyc\u00e9e, tr\u00e8s favorables \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e europ\u00e9enne, mais je suis effar\u00e9 &#8211; surtout lorsque je doi<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">s les utiliser. En \u00e9conomie, histoire, g\u00e9ographie, sociologie, l\u2019Europe est abord\u00e9e sans cesse, les m\u00eames fausses \u00e9vidences rab\u00e2ch\u00e9es d\u2019ann\u00e9e en ann\u00e9e, avec une finesse digne de la propagande stalinienne. Ce bourrage de crane, dont les \u00e9l\u00e8ves ne sont pas dupes, ne peut \u00e0 terme que les d\u00e9go\u00fbter d\u2019une id\u00e9e europ\u00e9enne qui, me semble-t-il, serait encore en mesure de supporter l\u2019intelligence, la r\u00e9flexion, la subtilit\u00e9 et pourquoi pas la discussion.<br \/>\nCeux qui d\u00e9finissent les programmes scolaires, ceux qui r\u00e9digent les manuels, oublient une r\u00e8gle d\u2019or de l\u2019enseignement &#8211; il ne faut jamais prendre les \u00e9l\u00e8ves pour des cons. Ils le sont parfois, mais c\u2019est loin d\u2019\u00eatre une r\u00e8gle g\u00e9n\u00e9rale.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\"><em>No one feels more european, pro-european, even pan-european than me, even when I might be less enthusiastic than twenty years ago &#8211; may be because I\u2019d rather have the Europe of the enlightenment than the Europe of Nations. Light is nice and cute, nations are ugly, dumb and nasty.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I should feel reassured when browsing school curricula and schoolbooks, all very pro-european, but I\u2019m aghast. In economics, history, geography, sociology, Europe comes back almost every year, in every syllabus, as an evidence that should not be discussed, like historical materialism in stalinist schoolbooks. Students are not fooled by this cramming, whose most likely effect will be to put them off all things european. It\u2019s shame, because I\u2019m sure European ideas can still stand thought, subtlety and even discussion.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Those who write curricula and schoolbooks forget a golden rule of teaching &#8211; never talk to students like they\u2019re dumb.
