We were discussing Shadows over Camelot with Serge and Bruno, and we looked for other topics which could use similar game systems. Of course, we started with the settings most similar with the Knights of the Round Table world. We discussed Star Wars, which started as an obvious Round Table rip-off before it became a more complex universe, and some Super Hero stories, but I’m totally illiterate about this and didn’t really take part. We thought it would be fun to go back to the roots of the story and make a gospel cooperation game in which you wouldn’t know which apostle will betray. The sinking of the Kursk was still fresh and dramatic news, so I suggested a wrecked Russian submarine in which you had to survive until the rescue team came in. Then we moved to other topics, but I never completely forgot this idea.

It came back a few years later, when discussing with one of my usual playtesters, Jef Gontier, who, in real life, works as an engineer on the motors of the French nuclear attack submarines. We instantly decided to start to work on a game, which was to be called “Save the Kursk!”. We wanted to design something similar with Shadows over Camelot, with several “quests” that players had to fulfill simultaneously – the “quests” being the various issues faced by the submarine, stalled motor, water leaks, overheating reactor, self-igniting missiles. We also wanted the game to be simpler, faster and, most of all, more humorous than the round table one.

We started with the map of the submarine, with ten or twelve rooms so that it will be easy to randomly determine one with just rolling a die. Then we made the first versions of the two card decks, a deck of more or less bad events and a deck of more or less useful items, like the black cards and white cards deck in Shadows over Camelot. This didn’t really change between the first drafts and the final published version of the game. We also had much troubles with the management of water leaks and water flows in the different rooms of the sub. The real tests started when all this was settled, and were mostly used to fine tune the game difficulty, so that it was neither too easy, neither too hard to save the sub. The two other cooperative games we had in mind when design “Save the Kursk!” were Reiner Knizia’s Lord of the Rings and Bruno Cathala & Serge Laget’s Shadows over Camelot, which both have the same flaw: once players are familiar with the game, they know the one best way, the winning strategy, and can apply it systematically, so that the only way to keep the game challenging is to increase its difficulty with Sauron starting farther or with beginning the game as squire. Since we wanted to make a less serious and less technical game, we opted for a different solution. We decided to bring more luck in the game, both in the event chronologic order and in the success or failure of the players’ actions. This means that we wanted no two games to feel the same, and no strategy to be the best one for every game. This also means players can lose everything on one or two bad rolls, but it’s also what makes the game feel realistic.

Twenty-five years ago, I played several games of The Awful Green Things from Outer Space. In Tom Wham’s zany two players boardgame, one plays the crew of the Znutar spaceship, the other plays the awful green things trying to take over the ship. After Jef and I had finalized the Red November, some friends reminded us of the similarities between these games – the closed doors ship setting, the board shape, and the humor in the rules. May be I was more or less inspired by my decades old games of the Awful Green Things while working on Red November, but it was not, as with Shadows over Camelot and Jenseits von Theben, a deliberate and conscious inspiration.

As for the Wreck of the B.S.M. Pandora, a big solitaire game from the eighties, I’ve just learned about this game and I’m trying to find a copy. Furthermore, Jef and I seriously considered, at one time, to change the setting of our game and move it into deep space.

There’s no better token of a game’s quality than the players’ fun and investment, and the fact they want to play again. I brought a near final prototype the Anse game week-end, organized by Serge Laget and his friends, and then at the Essen game fair. It was the most played, the most asked for, the most commented of all my prototypes. After the game, players were telling the story over and over, like it sometimes happens with role playing games. Of course, the provocative theme helped, but it wouldn’t have been enough if the game systems were not really good. Another good omen was the immediate interest of many publishers when I showed them the game, even when most of them soon backed down because of the controversial and bad taste theme.

Of course, the sinking of the Kursk was not a light theme but, like with the sexist rules in Valley of the Mammoths, I hoped we could neutralize the bad taste with light graphics and humor. The Vodka rules, the Playboy and Penthouse copies (an item that has disappeared from the published version) were here to indicate clearly, in case anyone still had doubts, that this was second degree. I was even imagining that the game could be illustrated by Gérard Mathieu, who did the mammoths. The theme was nevertheless a problem, and I promised to Croc, of Asmodée, that if after one year we could not fin a publisher for the submarine game, we will make a sci-fi version with a Scottish space-station running on whisky. This was not necessary, since two US publishers, Z-Man Games and Fantasy Flight Games, wanted to publish the submarine game. We opted for Fantasy Flight, which sounded highly motivated and wanted to move fast.

The main point in the Fantasy Flight editorial policy is to add orcs and trolls everywhere, so Chris Petersen wanted to change the Russian sub into a gnome sub. This was both a clever hint at Warcraft II gnomish submarines, and a way to attenuate the gloomy Kursk wreck reference, which was not very politically correct but on the other hand made for some of the game’s appeal. After some email discussion, we found an arrangement. There would be gnomes, but Russian gnomes drinking vodka. The graphics style, a mix between Steampunk and socialist realism, proves that they got our point well. We also found a clever title, less controversial than Save the Kursk! – Red November. It’s a double allusion, to the movie Red October, which featured a Russian Submarine, and to the strange and little known fact that the October revolution took place in November.

Un sous-marin gnome de Warcraft II
A warcraft II gnomish submarine

Red November was published at the same time as another cooperative game, Ghost Stories, by my friend Antoine Bauza.
