Agent Double
Un jeu de Bruno Faidutti et Ludovic Maublanc
Illustré par Pierô
2 joueurs – 30 minutes
Publié par Matagot (2011)
Tric Trac Boardgamegeek

Ludo, Pierô, Bruno

Double Agent is based on a simple idea : each player knows each agent’s loyalty to him, but doesn’t know his loyalty to his opponent. In such an ambiguous situation, it’s hard to decide who you can trust with your precious top-secret documents, which must not end in ennemy hands.

Like Tomahawk, Caesar & Cleopatra or Pecking Order, Double Agent is a game in which each player plays cards face down on his side of the gameboard. It is therefore a bluffing game, but it is also, as one can expect from a collaboration between Ludovic and me, a deliberately chaotic and often uncontrollable game. You have been warned…

It all started in 2004, when Ludovic Maublanc was still a novice game designer, and had not yet published Cash’n’Guns, Dice Town or Cyclades. Following an advice from the other Bruno, Bruno Cathala, Ludo contacted me to help him finalize a zany prototype – like most of his prototypes. It was about madmen painting the asylum’s ceiling and trying to escape. After some discussions and tests, the madmen became pirates. The players were now pirate captains, trying to enlist the best crewmen in a dark, noisy and smoky tavern. What made this tricky was that each player had only partial information about the sailors in the tavern and had to rely on the other players’ choices and decisions to guess who will fit best with his crew. There was first an auction version, then a hectic simultaneous action version. I still think there were one or two good ideas there…

Then Ludo had a clever idea – change the pirates into secret agents, and our hectic tavern brawl into a much quieter battle. The new setting fitted the game idea perfectly, and changing the multiplayer game into a strictly two players one solved a lot of practical problems with our prototype. Then I added a few thematic action cards, and we had a nice little card game, half bluffing, half deduction, rather chaotic, fast paced and fun to play.

At this time, the new French boardgame magazine JSP (games on a board) was trying to publish regularly small card and boardgames. Our light and unassuming game fitted perfectly, and we submitted it to Olivier. A first version of Double Agents was therefore published in the October 2005 issue of JSP. Some friends who hadn’t bought JSP, or who wanted the game in English, were from time to time asking how to get Double Agents, so we considered making free downloadable files for our websites.

This was also when Pierô, who was making the graphics for Ludo and Bruno’s Mr Jack, was entering our gaming circle. We asked him if he could make a few cartoons in order to make a more elegant downloadable version than the rough one which had been published in JSP. He kindly accepted but, while he was drawing the first pictures, Ludo and I – in fact, mostly Ludo – were making some changes to the game, adding new cards, changing some others, at one point even adding a sixth agent. Wolfgang Luedtke, the product manager for the Kosmos two players line, liked it a lot, which is not surprising since Double Agents has some similarities with his own Caesar and Cleopatra. Double Agents is, in a way, like Caesar and Cleopatra in reverse. In Caesar and Cleopatra, players place cards to increase their influence on patrician cards, which award each a given number of victory points. In Double Agent, the influence is given, even when it is half secret, and players mostly play file cards to modify the number of victory points awarded by each spy. Kosmos kept the game for a long time, and some of Wolfgang’s suggestions made their way into the final version.
