It’s true that Citadels and Lost Temple use the same drafting system for choosing «character cards» allowing for different actions during one’s turn. Mission: Red Planet and Fist of Dragonstones use slightly different card selection systems, but also have cards bearing the name and picture of a character, whose action makes the main part of a player’s turn. The character cards in Castle work completely differently, but also have characteristic thematically linked with the different characters.

This has very, very little in common with role playing games, or even with boardgames like Cosmic Encounter, in which each player has a different ability for the whole game. When playing Citadels, one doesn’t play the part of the Assassin, King or Warlord. Players are vaguely supposed to be city builders who, every round, hire one of the characters for a short time. I think it’s even told this way somewhere in the rules or on the back of the box. The rules of Lost Temple clearly state that players are explorers who get help from the indigenous people they meet in the jungle.

Anyway, when playing Citadels, one always say «I am the King», «I am the Bishop» and not «I hire the King», «I hire the Bishop». This twist makes the game more involving than the usual use of «action» or «spell» cards.
