La fonction du th\u00e8me dans les jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est pourtant assez particuli\u00e8re, parce que les m\u00e9canismes y sont plus importants, plus rigoureux, plus incontournables que dans un film ou un roman &#8211; il n&#8217;y a gu\u00e8re que P\u00e9rec qui ait \u00e9crit des livres comme Reiner Knizia fait des jeux, en partant des m\u00e9canismes et non du th\u00e8me, et je ne trouve pas le r\u00e9sultat, une sorte de litt\u00e9rature abstraite, tr\u00e8s convaincant. Dans un autre style, cependant, j&#8217;aime bien Mallarm\u00e9&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;auteur de jeu, m\u00eame lorsqu&#8217;il part d&#8217;un th\u00e8me, doit rapidement se pr\u00e9occuper de m\u00e9canismes, de syst\u00e8mes de jeu. Les meilleurs jeux sont m\u00eame souvent ceux dont le th\u00e8me et la m\u00e9canique sont ins\u00e9parables, car ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d&#8217;embl\u00e9e con\u00e7us ensemble. Et l\u00e0, on se rend vite compte que certaines th\u00e9matiques reviennent facilement, de mani\u00e8re presque paresseuse.<\/p>\n<p>Deux univers sont particuli\u00e8rement pratiques pour les auteurs de jeux, et en particulier ceux qui, comme moi, aiment introduire des effets un peu farfelus ou inattendus sans renoncer \u00e0 la coh\u00e9rence de l&#8217;univers. Ce sont l&#8217;Heroic Fantasy et la science fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a une dizaine d&#8217;ann\u00e9es de cela, il y avait dans presque tous mes jeux des sorciers et des dragons. Bien s\u00fbr, le fait que j&#8217;ai fait pas mal de GN et lu un peu de litt\u00e9rature fantastique y \u00e9tait pour quelque chose, mais c&#8217;\u00e9tait aussi un choix extr\u00eamement pratique, technique. Avec la magie, tout est possible. Tout ce qui est int\u00e9ressant du point de vue de la m\u00e9canique de jeu, des interactions entre joueurs, des choix tactiques ou strat\u00e9giques, peut trouver une justification th\u00e9matique, toujours la m\u00eame : c&#8217;est magique. Si Richard Garfield a choisi pour Magic the Gathering le th\u00e8me de l&#8217;Heroic Fantasy la plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, la plus floue, la plus vaste, c&#8217;est par ce que c&#8217;\u00e9tait le seul univers dans lequel il \u00e9tait possible de donner un vague sens \u00e0 toutes les cartes, \u00e0 tous les effets imaginables, pour peu qu&#8217;on leur trouve un nom aux sonorit\u00e9s vaguement f\u00e9\u00e9riques.<\/p>\n<p>Avec la science fiction, comme avec le fantastique, tout peut assez facilement trouver une justification th\u00e9matique. La technologie, surtout lorsqu&#8217;elle est extra-terrestre, ne s&#8217;explique pas et peut donc tout expliquer. Les pions passent d&#8217;un bout \u00e0 l&#8217;autre du plateau de jeu, au travers de portes stellaires ou de fractures du continuum spatio-temporel. Les cartes circulent d&#8217;un joueur \u00e0 l&#8217;autre gr\u00e2ce aux pouvoirs t\u00e9l\u00e9kyn\u00e9siques de civilisations lointaines. Rencontre Cosmique, de tr\u00e8s loin le meilleur jeu de science fiction jamais publi\u00e9, illustre \u00e0 merveille toutes les possibilit\u00e9s permises par ce th\u00e8me.<\/p>\n<p>D&#8217;autres th\u00e8mes qui peuvent sembler beaucoup plus cadr\u00e9s, plus pr\u00e9cis, sont \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s utilis\u00e9s dans le monde du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Les jeux pour deux joueurs repr\u00e9sentent tr\u00e8s fr\u00e9quemment la guerre, les jeux pour des joueurs plus nombreux pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant l&#8217;exploration, la gestion de ressources, la construction d&#8217;une cit\u00e9 ou d&#8217;un royaume. Mais quand on parle d&#8217;un jeu de guerre, de gestion, d&#8217;exploration, est-on encore dans le th\u00e8me ou d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans la m\u00e9canique ? Une guerre peut \u00eatre antique, m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, contemporaine, fantastique ou spatiale, tout comme le commerce, tout comme la gestion d&#8217;un empire ou m\u00eame d&#8217;un village. On peut explorer une for\u00eat, un souterrain, une galaxie. Tout cela peut donc \u00eatre situ\u00e9 dans un univers historique, ou relativement abstrait, mais l\u00e0 encore, le fantastique et la science-fiction apportent toujours plus de libert\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019auteur de jeu, surtout s\u2019il a, comme moi, l\u2019esprit quelque peu baroque. Si l&#8217;arch\u00e9type du gros jeu pour joueurs est un jeu d&#8217;exploration spatiale, de construction et de gestion de son empire et de sa flotte, puis, comme dans un orgasme final, de bataille intergalactique avec les flottes adverses, ce n&#8217;est pas parce que les joueurs sont particuli\u00e8rement fans de Space opera baroque, un genre litt\u00e9raire marginal et ennuyeux, m\u00eame s&#8217;il passe mieux au cin\u00e9ma. C&#8217;est parce que seul le Space Opera permet de tout mettre, tout caser, tout faire rentrer dans une bo\u00eete de jeu &#8211; m\u00eame s&#8217;il faut souvent une tr\u00e8s grosse bo\u00eete, comme dans Twilight Imperium ou Eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>Pour les gros jeux, les jeux pour joueurs, science-fiction et fantastique sont donc des th\u00e8mes particuli\u00e8rement faciles, surtout pour qui veut concevoir un jeu un peu alambiqu\u00e9, un peu chaotique, un peu touffu. On pourrait sans doute expliquer de la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re pourquoi les jeux de gestion de ressources, avec des cubes en bois de toutes les couleurs, ont si souvent un th\u00e8me m\u00e9di\u00e9val ou Renaissance. Quoi de plus \u00e9vident que de faire des cubes de couleur du bois, de la pierre, du m\u00e9tal, et tout le n\u00e9cessaire pour construire des ch\u00e2teaux des palais, qu\u2019il faudra faire plus beaux que ceux du voisin ?. It would be wrong to assume, however, that the function of the theme\/setting and mechanisms\/systems are the same in a novel and in a game. Perec is the only author I can think of who wrote books like Knizia designs games, starting from a mechanism idea, and I\u2019m not really convinced by his nearly abstract literature. Well, on the other hand, I quite like Mallarm\u00e9\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The game author, even when he starts from a theme, must almost from the beginning think of the game systems, the machanisms that wil go with it. The best games are often those in which setting and mechanism cannot be set apart, because they were devised together. Two settings are very convenient to work simultaneously on story and systems, especially for authors like me who like to add zany and unexpected effects while keeping the game universe consistent. These are Heroic Fantasy and Science Fiction<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Ten or twelve years ago, all my games had wizards and dragons. Of course, this was also the time I was playing larps and reading fantasy, but this may not be the main reason. There was also a very technical explanation \u2013 magic makes everything possible, and therefore almost everything consistent. Any game system that can be interesting because if brings tactical choices, strategic decisions, bluffing opportunities, can find a thematic justification. In fact, the justification is always the same \u2013 it\u2019s magic! Richard Garfield choose generic heroic fantasy as a setting for Magic the Gathering because it was the only way to give a vague thematic sense to all the zany card effects he had in mind, as long as he gave each one of them some meaningless fantasy name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is the same with Science Fiction, which can also give some meaning to any game event or effect. Technology, and especially alien technology, cannot be explained and therefore can explain everything. Tokens can jump from one part of the board to another through stellar gates or tears through the space-time continuum. Cards move from one player to the other due to the telekinetic powers of far away civilizations, and so on. Cosmic Encounter, my favorite science fiction game, is a good illustration of the infinite possibilities of alien cultures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are also some more precise, more limited, more mundane settings that are often used in boardgames \u2013 but the question here is what exactly is still theme or setting and what is already mechanism or system. Two players games are often about war, multiplayer games about resource management, building castles, kingdoms or empires, or exploration. But is war, resource management, exploration a mechanism or a theme ? It is neither one nor the other, and a bit of both. A war can be antique, medieval, modern, fantasy of in deep space, and the same is true of resource trading or management. Explorers can enter a cave, a forest or a galaxy. All these subjects \u2013 war, exploration, trade, development \u2013 can fit with many settings but, once more, science fiction and fantasy allow for more variety, more opportunities, more freedom for the designer \u2013 especially the baroque minded one. The archetypal heavy gamers game is a game of space exploration, development and empire management, with a intergalactic war as final climax. This doesn\u2019t mean that hardcore gamers are all fans of space opera, a rather boring and repetitive literary genre, even when it can make for impressive movies. This is just because it\u2019s the only setting that allows to put everything in the same game box \u2013 even when it often needs a very big box, such as with Twilight Imperium or Eclipse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Heroic Fantasy and Science Fiction are very useful settings for boardgame designers wanting to make something a bit heavy, a bit convoluted, a bit chaotic. It might be possible to explain in a similar way why so many wooden cubes \u2013 ressource management \u2013 worker placement eurogames are about building medieval or Renaissance castles, palaces or churches : wooden cubes seem destined to represent wood, stone, metal, and therefore to be used in some kind of old style building trade. As for kids games, the obvious theme is animals \u2013 and often these animals have just one main activity, they eat.
