Certains ajoutent parfois les illustrateurs, le plus souvent des illustratrices, les imprimeurs, le plus souvent chinois ou polonais, et \u00e0 l\u2019autre bout de la chaine les boutiques de jeux. Le r\u00f4le des critiques, ces jours-ci rebaptis\u00e9s un peu ridiculement reviewers ou influenceurs, est aussi de plus en plus discut\u00e9. Il est pourtant des acteurs de plus en plus importants dans le milieu ludique, que tous les auteurs d\u00e9butants devraient conna\u00eetre, et dont personne ne parle jamais, les agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les agents ludiques sont des interm\u00e9diaires essentiels et connus de tous qui mettent en relation auteurs et \u00e9diteurs, et c\u2019est surtout de cela que je vais parler ici, mais aussi \u00e9diteurs entre eux, et parfois \u00e9diteurs et fabricants ou distributeurs. Ils jouent un peu le m\u00eame r\u00f4le que, pour les \u00e9crivains, les agents litt\u00e9raires, un peu mieux connus du grand public car souvent mis en sc\u00e8ne par les romanciers \u2013 par exemple r\u00e9cemment dans l\u2019l&#8217;excellent <em>Yellowface<\/em>, de R.F. Ils existaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt dix, lorsque mes premiers jeux sont parus, mais j\u2019ai toujours pris plaisir \u00e0 faire le tour des salons, discuter de jeux, boire des bi\u00e8res et pr\u00e9senter mes cr\u00e9ations. Vouloir trouver un \u00e9diteur via internet, sans se d\u00e9placer, est illusoire dans un secteur o\u00f9 l\u2019affectif et les relations humaines sont essentiels, et o\u00f9 les bonnes id\u00e9es \u00e9ditoriales surgissent souvent lors de la discussion. Faire appel \u00e0 un agent est donc la mani\u00e8re la plus simple de proc\u00e9der pour un jeune auteur qui n\u2019en a pas l\u2019envie ou les moyens, qui n\u2019a pas de vraie connaissance du milieu et du march\u00e9 du jeu, et qui souhaite un accompagnement professionnel. L&#8217;\u00e9quipe de  Forgenext ou de White Castle ne se limite en effet pas \u00e0 prendre votre prototype et le montrer aux \u00e9diteurs, ils y jouent, ils vous conseillent \u00e9ventuellement pour le retravailler, le d\u00e9velopper, le simplifier, ils vous aident \u00e0 r\u00e9diger les r\u00e8gles, tout un travail qui vaut bien les 25 ou 30% des royalties qu\u2019ils percevront s\u2019ils vendent le jeu. Avoir recours \u00e0 un agent ne co\u00fbte en effet rien au d\u00e9part, puisqu\u2019il est pay\u00e9 en pourcentage des ventes, et donc uniquement s\u2019il place vos jeux. Pour les \u00e9diteurs, qui re\u00e7oivent chaque ann\u00e9e des propositions de jeux de plus en plus nombreuses, souvent des centaines, et n\u2019ont pas les moyens humains de toutes les \u00e9tudier, l\u2019agent est un filtre qui leur permet de ne consid\u00e9rer que des jeux aboutis, originaux et qui correspondent \u00e0 leur ligne \u00e9ditoriale. J&#8217;ai eu l&#8217;occasion de rencontrer Gaetan \u00e0 Etourvy, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Ian Parovel. Apr\u00e8s avoir discut\u00e9 longuement, apr\u00e8s avoir sympathis\u00e9 et apr\u00e8s lui avoir pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 de nombreux protos, on a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de se revoir quelques temps apr\u00e8s puis il m&#8217;a invit\u00e9 \u00e0 rejoindre Forgenext en tant qu&#8217;auteur longue dur\u00e9e et \u00e0 passer par lui pour mes prochains projets. J&#8217;ai pes\u00e9 le pour et le contre et j&#8217;\u00e9tais partant.<\/em><br><em>La raison principale et le premier avantage pour moi : plus besoin d\u2019encha\u00eener les rendez-vous sur les salons, et c&#8217;est un point majeur. Je profite des salons pour voir les amis, je joue, je suis d\u00e9tendu et je n&#8217;ai pas les cinq ou six rendez-vous quotidiens, au minimum, des autres auteurs. Je n&#8217;ai pas non plus besoin de payer les d\u00e9placements pour Essen, Nuremberg ou la GenCon, qui sont de tr\u00e8s beaux festivals, mais pas tous pr\u00e8s de chez moi, pas tous pendant les vacances scolaires &#8211; je suis prof. Comme auteur d\u00e9butant, je ne gagnais pas d&#8217;argent avec mes premiers protos, et encha\u00eener les festivals \u00e9tait compliqu\u00e9.&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>Un autre avantage est plus difficile \u00e0 expliquer. Les semaines qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8daient un salon, je ne me sentais plus en &#8220;cr\u00e9ation&#8221; mais juste en phase de &#8220;peaufinage&#8221;. Je ne cherchais pas \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer mes protos, mais il fallait que je les lisse pour qu&#8217;ils soient pr\u00e9sentables, ce qui impliquait souvent d\u2019ajouter ou retirer des \u00e9l\u00e9ments afin que le jeu se d\u00e9roule au mieux en l\u2019\u00e9tat. Souvent, cet \u00e9tat n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas parfait et ce lissage allait au d\u00e9triment d&#8217;am\u00e9liorations qui auraient pu \u00eatre trouv\u00e9es sans date butoir. Maintenant, peu importe les dates, Gaetan s&#8217;occupe des pr\u00e9sentations et moi je continue de peaufiner les protos, sans trop me soucier des&nbsp; festivals qui arrivent. C\u2019est \u00e0 une autre rencontre d\u2019auteurs de jeux, en Pologne, que j\u2019ai crois\u00e9 Anita Landgraf, de White Castle, qui a plac\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s d\u2019Asmodee Challengers, le jeu de Johannes Krenner et Markus Slawitscheck qui a par la suite obtenu en 2023 le KennerSpiel des Jahres. Michel Matschoss et Michael Tschiggerl ont longtemps travaill\u00e9 chez des \u00e9diteurs allemands avant de monter leur petite agence. S\u2019ils repr\u00e9sentent des auteurs vivants, le plus gros de leur activit\u00e9 est peu \u00e0 peu devenu la gestion, pour le compte d\u2019h\u00e9ritiers qui ne s\u2019int\u00e9ressent souvent gu\u00e8re aux jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, des catalogues d\u2019auteurs d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9s, notamment Alex Randolph. Smart Cookie Games contribue donc moins \u00e0 faire \u00e9merger de nouveaux jeux qu\u2019\u00e0 \u00e9viter que de grands classiques ne disparaissent. Je les ai rencontr\u00e9s lorsque j\u2019ai voulu d\u00e9velopper un jeu en prenant pour base Veleno, d\u2019Alex Randolph. Ce jeu a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 sous le nom de Tonari, et devrait bient\u00f4t ressortir, sans doute sous le nom de Friendly Fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour l\u2019instant, j\u2019appr\u00e9cie les salons, et je voyage m\u00eame plus depuis que j\u2019ai pris ma retraite de l\u2019\u00e9ducation nationale. J\u2019ai plaisir \u00e0 y c\u00f4toyer auteurs, \u00e9diteurs, joueurs, illustrateurs (et agents) du monde entier, et n\u2019ai donc que rarement eu recours \u00e0 un interm\u00e9diaire. Je suis cependant l\u2019un des plus \u00e2g\u00e9s des auteurs de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 encore actifs, et le jour o\u00f9 je n\u2019en aurai plus l\u2019envie ou la force, je ferai tr\u00e8s certainement appel \u00e0 un agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Si vous observez attentivement le dos de la boite de l\u2019\u00e9dition am\u00e9ricaine de mon jeu Venture Angels, vous remarquerez, entre celui de l\u2019\u00e9diteur princeps cor\u00e9en, Mandoo Games, et celui de l\u2019\u00e9diteur am\u00e9ricain, Gameheads, le logo d\u2019Instaplay, une entreprise dont vous n\u2019avez sans doute jamais entendu parler. Instaplay, qui sur beaucoup de salons partage son stand avec Forgenext, est un agent mettant en relation les \u00e9diteurs, souvent de taille modeste, travaillant sur des march\u00e9s diff\u00e9rents. Isabelle Vandamme est une amie, qui elle aussi fait souvent le voyage d\u2019Etourvy, mais je n\u2019ai personnellement aucune relation contractuelle avec son entreprise. C\u2019est par Instaplay que Mandoo Games, qui n\u2019a pas la taille suffisante pour d\u00e9dier une \u00e9quipe compl\u00e8te \u00e0 l\u2019exportation, passe pour placer certains de ses jeux en Europe et aux \u00c9tats-Unis, comme r\u00e9cemment l\u2019excellent Vale of Eternity, et c\u2019est aussi par Instaplay que la jeune \u00e9quipe de Gameheads est pass\u00e9e pour trouver certains de ses premiers jeux &#8211; Venture Angels et, bient\u00f4t, Vabanque. Alors, oui, Instaplay prend une partie des droits, mais rien de plus normal puisqu\u2019ils font une part essentielle du travail et que, sans eux, Vabanque et Venture Angels n\u2019auraient pas \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s outre-Atlantique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vu de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur, la diff\u00e9rence entre les agents mettant en relation \u00e9diteurs entre eux, les licensing agents, et ceux faisant le lien entre auteurs et \u00e9diteurs, les designer agents, n\u2019est pas toujours stricte. Instaplay et Forgenext travaillent de concert, et l\u2019un peut tout \u00e0 fait, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion, signaler \u00e0 l\u2019autre un jeu pouvant \u00eatre int\u00e9ressant pour l\u2019un de ses clients. MobVanguard est plut\u00f4t un \u00ab&nbsp;licensing agent&nbsp;\u00bb, mais il arrive que, apr\u00e8s avoir vu un prototype auquel ils croient, ils convainquent un \u00e9diteur de le publier, esp\u00e9rant ensuite placer le jeu sur d\u2019autres march\u00e9s. C\u2019est ainsi que, apr\u00e8s avoir jou\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019un de mes prototypes de jeu de cartes, King\u2019s Fool, Francesco Biglia, m\u2019a assur\u00e9 savoir quel \u00e9diteur pourrait \u00eatre int\u00e9ress\u00e9. Leur boulot, c\u2019est de conna\u00eetre un peu tout le monde, d\u2019\u00eatre partout, et de mettre les gens en relation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les deux activit\u00e9s sont pourtant diff\u00e9rentes. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 l\u2019agent d\u2019auteur est, comme je l\u2019ai dit plus haut, une sorte de producteur qui suit un auteur et l\u2019aide \u00e0 placer ses projets aupr\u00e8s des \u00e9quipes \u00e9ditoriales, le \u00ab\u00a0licensing agent\u00a0\u00bb pr\u00e9sente surtout des produits finis aux \u00e9quipes marketing. Ce ne sont pas les m\u00eames gens, ce n\u2019est pas la m\u00eame chose. Beaucoup, dont moi-m\u00eame, ont r\u00e9pondu sur son site et sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux pour lui signaler l\u2019existence d\u2019agents ludiques, et, surtout, s\u2019\u00e9tonner de ce qu\u2019il ne les ait jamais crois\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il y a \u00e0 cela deux explications. La premi\u00e8re est que les agents dont j\u2019ai parl\u00e9 plus haut sont tous bas\u00e9s en Europe, et travaillent beaucoup avec l\u2019Asie mais, me semble-t-il, assez peu avec les \u00c9tats-Unis. Je sais qu\u2019il existe des agents am\u00e9ricains pour les inventeurs de jouets, je n\u2019en connais pas qui s\u2019occupent plus sp\u00e9cifiquement des jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9. S\u2019il y en a, ils sont plus modestes et moins pr\u00e9sents sur les salons, donc moins efficaces. L\u2019autre raison est que Stonemaier games publie uniquement des jeux longs et complexes, un genre dont les cr\u00e9ateurs sont des passionn\u00e9s qui ne demandent rien de mieux que faire le tour des salons, et auquel, par manque de temps, de comp\u00e9tences et parfois de go\u00fbt, les agents pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent ne pas trop se m\u00ealer. Sometimes, they add illustrators, usually women, and manufacturers, usually Chinese or Polish, and at the other end of the line boardgame shops. The place of game critics, often renamed reviewers or influencers, also starts to be discussed. There are however main actors whom all wannabe designers should know and who are always ignored, boardgame agents.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Boardgame agents are professional intermediaries, known by everyone, who act as go-between between designers and publishers, and sometimes also between publishers from different countries and between publishers and manufacturers. They were already here in the nineties, when my first games were published, but I soon took pleasure in attending game fairs, in discussing games, in drinking beer and pitching my designs. Trying to pitch games online is bound to fail in an industry where human relations are essential, and where the best ideas often spring from discussions. Going through an agent is the cleverest way to proceed for a young designer who doesn\u2019t have the will or the means to tour game fairs, who doesn\u2019t really know the boardgaming world, and who wants some professional help and support. Companies like Forgenext or White Castle don\u2019t just show your prototype to publishers. They play it, they give you informed advice on how to rework, to develop or simplify it. They help you to write the rules. All this is largely worth the 25 or 30% of the royalties they will get if it is published. It allows them to look only at original and finalized games which could fit their line. I met Gaetan at Etourvy, thanks to Ian Parovel. We discussed and sympathized, I showed him several prototypes, and we decided to meet again a few weeks later. Then he asked me to become a Forgenext \u201clong term\u201d designer and to pass through him for all my future projects. I thought a bit about it and accepted.<br>The main advantage for me is that I don\u2019t have to attend meeting after meeting at game fairs. I still attend fairs but I can meet friends, play games and have fun, without the five or six \u2013 at least \u2013 daily appointments that most other designers have to attend. I also don\u2019t need to pay trips to Essen, Nurnberg or Gen Con, which are nice fairs but far from my Parisian home, and not always during my school holidays \u2013 I\u2019m a teacher. As a wannabe designer, I didn\u2019t get any money from my first prototypes and attending all these fairs was difficult. &nbsp;<br>There is another less obvious advantage. In the weeks before a game fair, I didn\u2019t feel like I was really \u201ccreating\u201d, I was more like \u201cpolishing\u201d games. I didn\u2019t try to make them better games, I was just trying to make them look polished, often removing or adding stuff so that they worked as they were. Often, this polishing was far from perfect, and hindered improvements which could have been made if I had no deadline. Now, Gaetan takes care of pitches while I develop and fine-tune prototypes without worrying too much about upcoming game fairs. I met Anita Landgraf, from from White Castle, at a game designers workshop in Poland. It\u2019s White Castle who convinced Asmodee to publish Challengers, the game by Johannes Krenner and Markus Slawitschek which later got the 2023 Kenner Spiel des Jahres.<\/em> <em>You can listen here to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lepointdepolgara.fr\/index.php\/2025\/05\/08\/interview-anita-landgraf-arno-steinwender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interesting interview of Anita<\/a>, in which she discusses her job and the place of women in the boardgaming world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Smart Cookie Games is a bit different. Michael Matschoss and Michael Tschiggerl have worked for major German game publishers before they decided to start their small agency. While they work for a few living game designers, their main activity has become managing the game catalog of deceased authors, among which Alex Randolph, on behalf of inheritors who don\u2019t always have an interest in boardgames. I met them when I wanted to develop a game based on Alex\u2019s Veleno. This game was later published as Tonari, and should soon come back, probably as Friendly Fishing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So far, I enjoy attending game fairs, and I\u2019m even travelling more since I retired from my day job as a teacher. I have fun meeting designers, publishers, players, artists (and agents, of course) and I\u2019ve rarely needed an intermediary. However, being one of the oldest active game designers, I will certainly hire an agent some day, when I will lack the strength or the will to travel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If you look attentively at the box bottom of the US edition of my Venture Angels, you might notice, between the logos of Mandoo games, the original Korean publisher, and of Gameheads, the US licensee, that of a company you\u2019ve probably never heard of, Instaplay. Instaplay, who often shares a booth with Forgenext at game fairs, is a licensing agent. It acts as a go-between between publishers from different countries. Isabelle Vandamme is a friend, and often comes to Etourvy, but I have no contractual relation with her company. Mandoo games doesn\u2019t have the size, or the will, to deal internally with licensing their games in the rest of the world, and decided to go through Instaplay to find licensees for games like the excellent Vale of Eternity in Europe or the US. It\u2019s also through Instaplay that Gameheads, a new US publisher, went to find some of their first titles \u2013 Venture Angels and, soon, Vabanque. Of course, Instaplay takes a commission, but this is perfectly fair since they did some of the job and, without them, my games would not have been published in the US.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From the outside, the difference between designer agents and licensing agents is not always clear. Instaplay and Forgenext work together, and I imagine that one sometimes gives a hint to the other on a game that could be interesting. MOB Vanguard is mostly a licensing agent, but they sometimes put publishers in contact with the designer of a prototype they really liked, and which they think they can later license in some other market. Their job is to know everyone, to be everywhere, and to put people in relation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The two types of agents, however, are still different. While the designer agent is a \u201cproducer\u201d who helps the designer finalize his games and pitches them to the publishers\u2019 creative editorial teams, the licensing agent sells finished products to their marketing teams. Different people, different expectations. He regretted that there were no boardgame designer agents, when literary agents were numerous in the book world. Several designers, including me, answered that there were designer agents, and that they were surprised that, as a boardgame publisher, he had never encountered them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I think there are two reasons for this. First, all the agents I\u2019ve listed in this article are based in Europe and, while they often work with Asian publishers and designers, they seem to have little contacts and business in the US. I know of US toy inventor agents, I don\u2019t know any boardgame designer agent based there. There are probably one or two, but less known, less international, and therefore less efficient. Second, Stonemaier games only published long and complex games, a genre where designers are often nerdy enthusiasts who enjoy touring game fairs, and with which most agents, lacking time, competence and interest, largely ignore.
