Tous sont des jeux de gestion de ressources plein de cubes en bois, con\u00e7us et \u00e9quilibr\u00e9s avec soin, d&#8217;un int\u00e9r\u00eat tactique ou strat\u00e9gique ind\u00e9niable, mais qui ne parviennent pas \u00e0 m&#8217;amuser, \u00e0 m&#8217;exciter, \u00e0 m&#8217;int\u00e9resser.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier probl\u00e8me vient du th\u00e8me de ces jeux, ou plus exactement de la mani\u00e8re \u00e0 la fois superficielle et surfaite dont ce th\u00e8me est inscrit dans le jeu. Il y a une dizaine d&#8217;ann\u00e9es, il \u00e9tait de bon ton de se moquer de jeux allemands au th\u00e8me inexistant ou insignifiant. Les auteurs de Descendance, Lords of Waterdeep ou Qu\u00e9bec semblent au premier abord avoir compris la le\u00e7on et avoir introduit dans des jeux assez complexes des \u00e9l\u00e9ments th\u00e9matiques nombreux, jusqu&#8217;aux commentaires historiques \u00e0 la fin des r\u00e8gles de Qu\u00e9bec, et aux &#8220;flavor text&#8221; des qu\u00eates de Lords of Waterdeep. On y croit vaguement \u00e0 la lecture des r\u00e8gles, mais tout s&#8217;efface d\u00e8s que la partie commence. Les kubenbois de Waterdeep sont cens\u00e9s repr\u00e9senter les clercs, guerriers, voleurs ou magiciens que l&#8217;on recrute dans les tavernes d&#8217;une cit\u00e9 m\u00e9di\u00e9vale fantastique et que l&#8217;on envoie accomplir des qu\u00eates, mais tr\u00e8s vite on ne voit que des cubes-ressources blancs, noirs, oranges ou mauves avec lesquels on ach\u00e8te des cartes. Le th\u00e8me est peut \u00eatre riche, presque baroque, mais il ne fonctionne pas. C&#8217;est un peu la m\u00eame chose avec Qu\u00e9bec &#8211; des b\u00e2timents historiques, une carte g\u00e9ographiquement fid\u00e8le, un scoring cens\u00e9 repr\u00e9senter le d\u00e9veloppement militaire, agricole, artisanal et culturel, mais tr\u00e8s vite on ne fait que poser des cubes sur des cases qui ne repr\u00e9sentent que de potentiels bonus qui ne correspondent \u00e0 rien de th\u00e9matique, ou permettant de marquer des points rouges, jaunes, verts ou violets. Sans se situer dans un contexte historique ou imaginaire aussi pr\u00e9cis, Descendance se veut aussi un jeu \u00e0 la th\u00e9matique riche, avec ses g\u00e9n\u00e9rations de personnages, avec les points que l&#8217;on marque en restant au village pour faire carri\u00e8re dans le commerce, l&#8217;Eglise ou l&#8217;administration, ou en partant voyager au loin. La encore, ce sont les fameux kubenbois qui posent probl\u00e8me &#8211; les cubes roses sont la Connaissance, les bruns la Foi, les verts le charisme, les orange l&#8217;habilet\u00e9 &#8211; dr\u00f4les de ressources &#8211; mais qu&#8217;importe, puisque les joueurs n&#8217;y font pas attention et ne font que manipuler des cubes de ressources de diff\u00e9rentes couleurs.<\/p>\n<p>Le th\u00e8me d&#8217;un jeu n&#8217;a pas pour seule fonction de permettre aux illustrateurs de se d\u00e9fouler et \u00e0 l&#8217;auteur de trouver des noms pour ses cartes, ses pions ou ses cubes. Qu&#8217;il soit ou non \u00e0 l&#8217;origine du jeu, il doit donner une coh\u00e9rence \u00e0 l&#8217;ensemble des m\u00e9canismes et des \u00e9l\u00e9ments, et permettre ainsi aux joueurs de s&#8217;y retrouver. Les kubenbois de Belfort ou de Kingdom of Solomon, deux jeux &#8220;\u00e0 l&#8217;allemande&#8221; r\u00e9cemment publi\u00e9s par de petits \u00e9diteurs am\u00e9ricains ne pr\u00e9tendent pas repr\u00e9senter des connaissances ou des aventuriers mais tout simplement du bois, du m\u00e9tal, des pierres utilis\u00e9es ensuite pour construire des b\u00e2timents. C&#8217;est sans doute moins original, mais cela marche, on s&#8217;y prend, et ces jeux sans grande pr\u00e9tention m\u00e9riteraient sans doute d&#8217;\u00eatre plus remarqu\u00e9s que des blockbusters \u00e0 l&#8217;am\u00e9ricaine ou des produits trop bien format\u00e9s pour le Spiel des Jahres.<br \/>\nLeurs th\u00e8mes ne sont ni meilleurs, ni moins bons que ceux des jeux dont j&#8217;ai parl\u00e9 plus haut. L&#8217;univers religieux de Kingdom of Solomon ne l&#8217;emp\u00eache pas d&#8217;\u00eatre tr\u00e8s agressif, les bonnes places n&#8217;\u00e9tant jamais assez nombreuses pour tous les joueurs. Je n&#8217;y ai m\u00eame pas jou\u00e9, mais j&#8217;ai suivi avec attention toute une partie, et m\u00eame comme simple spectateur, j&#8217;ai tout compris et c&#8217;\u00e9tait passionnant. Les nains et les elfes de Belfort sont des st\u00e9r\u00e9otypes, mais ils contribuent \u00e0 ce que le jeu respire l&#8217;humour et les coups bas. Un peu plus ancien, Alien Frontiers ou Magnum Sal sont aussi deux excellents jeux de gestion de ressources \u00e0 l&#8217;allemande, un peu plus interactifs que la moyenne, et qui auraient largement m\u00e9rit\u00e9 le m\u00eame succ\u00e8s que Descendance ou Lords of Waterdeep.<\/p>\n<p>Bref, je pense comme Tom qu&#8217;il y a dans l&#8217;univers des kubenbois une certaine d\u00e9rive vers des univers baroques mais peu coh\u00e9rents, aussi riches que superficiels, vers des jeux d&#8217;optimisation calculatoires mais sans probl\u00e9matique, sans vision d&#8217;ensemble. Il semble y avoir un public pour de tels jeux, je n&#8217;en fais pas clairement pas partie, mais je n&#8217;en suis pas pour autant hostile \u00e0 tous les cubes en bois. He is prone to exaggeration and likes to overplay his role in the French gaming world, but I can understand him since i have also become tired of some German style strategic games, all about worker placement and resource management, which have lost the freshness that was, in the nineties, the great charm of games like Settlers of Catan San Marco, Tikal, Aladdin&#8217;s Dragons or Elfenland.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Three games I have played recently are very good examples of this trend. Fifteen years ago, we used to mock the absence or blandness of the German games&#8217; themes. The authors of The Village, Lords of Waterdeep or Quebec got the point and seem to have built their games on complex and rich thematic settings, be they history or fantasy, with even historical comments in the rules of Quebec and various flavor texts on the quest cards of Lords of Waterdeep. All this sounds more or less convincing and consistent when reading the rules, but soon withers away when the game starts. The woodencubes in Waterdeep are supposed to be adventurers, clerics, warriors, wizards and thieves recruited to fulfill various quests, but soon they become just white, orange, purple and black resource cubes spent to buy victory point cards. The setting might look rich, even baroque, but it just doesn&#8217;t work. It&#8217;s the same with Quebec. The game has historical buildings, and a complex scoring system supposed to represent military, agriculture, manufacturing and culture. This is instantly forgotten, and players just move cubes around to get esoteric bonuses and score purple, yellow, green or red points.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The Village doesn&#8217;t have such a detailed and specific setting, just generic Middle Ages, but it also pretends to be thematically rich and accurate, with clever rules for the aging and death of characters, with points scored either in the Village in the trade, church or state career, or in long distance trade. Once more, the problem comes from the wooden resource cubes &#8211; pink cubes are for knowledge, brown ones are faith, Green ones charisma and orange handcraft skill. No matter wether theme or mechanisms came first, the setting is here to give unity and consistency to all the game parts and systems, and to guide players in the game. In these three games, I&#8217;ve felt lost and not guided, as if the setting brought more confusion than consistency.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are bad,mor simply bland, wooden cubes games, but there are also good, even very good ones. The wooden cubes in Belfort, or in Kingdom of Solomon, two &#8220;euro games&#8221; recently published in the US, don&#8217;t pretend to be knowledge or people, but are just the good old building resources, wood, stone, ore and gold, used in building various&#8230; buildings and monuments. It may be less original, it may sound unassuming, but it&#8217;s consistent with the gameplay. These lower profile and less ambitious games deserve more attention than D&amp;D blockbusters or preformatted Spiel des Jahres. Their themes are neither better than worse than those of the other games I\u2019ve talked about before, but hey work much better. Despite its religious setting, Kingdom of Solomon is a nasty worker placement and resource management game in which there\u2019s never enough good spots and enough temples to build for everyone. I\u2019ve actually not played it, but I\u2019ve looked at a whole game, and it was like a good movie. The dwarves and elves in Belfort might be more generic and stereotypical than the D&amp;D characters in Deepwater, but that\u2019s also why the game feel humorous, which is nicely balanced by a nasty enough gameplay. There seem to be enough players for these games to sell, but I\u2019m not &#8211; which doesn\u2019t want I won\u2019t decline to push the occasional wooden cube, providing the game is light, interactive, thematic and consistent enough.
