J\u2019ai aussi, \u00e0 l\u2019occasion, \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 dans des \u00e9coles de jeu video, qui consid\u00e8rent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, et \u00e0 raison, le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 comme un proche voisin qu\u2019il est bon de conna\u00eetre. Je r\u00e9ponds toujours avec d\u2019autant plus de plaisir \u00e0 ces invitations que j\u2019aime parler en public et pense \u00eatre assez p\u00e9dagogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comme dans bien des domaines, des \u201cstages de d\u00e9couverte\u201d sur quelques jours, \u00e0 destination de tous ceux, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement des adultes, tent\u00e9s par la cr\u00e9ation ludique existent depuis longtemps. Si quelques-uns peuvent-\u00eatre des arnaques, la plupart sont utiles. Ils d\u00e9truisent parfois quelques illusions mais permettent surtout d\u2019apprendre quelques astuces, quelques m\u00e9thodes, et de d\u00e9couvrir les contraintes de l\u2019\u00e9dition et du march\u00e9 du jeu. Ils sont donc une excellente chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019un des premiers conseils que je donne aux aspirants auteur de jeu est de trouver d\u2019abord un autre boulot, et de le conserver. J\u2019ai donc \u00e9t\u00e9 assez surpris, et d\u2019abord un peu sceptique, en d\u00e9couvrant qu\u2019il existait d\u00e9sormais des formations sp\u00e9cifiques, parfois sur plusieurs ann\u00e9es, \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 et dans des \u00e9coles priv\u00e9es, pour devenir auteur de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mon scepticisme venait d\u2019abord, bien s\u00fbr, de mon exp\u00e9rience personnelle. De telles formations n\u2019existaient pas dans ma jeunesse, et si elles avaient exist\u00e9, il ne me serait sans doute pas venu \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de les suivre. Comme tous les auteurs de jeux que je connais, et pas seulement ceux de ma g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, j\u2019ai appris le m\u00e9tier sur le tas, en commen\u00e7ant par bricoler \u00e0 partir de mes jeux pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s. Lorsque l\u2019on me demande comment on devient auteur de jeu, je r\u00e9pons d\u2019ailleurs le plus souvent \u201cen jouant\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On m\u2019objectera bien s\u00fbr que ce qui ne m\u2019aurait pas tent\u00e9 et ne m\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 n\u00e9cessaire pourrait \u00eatre aujourd\u2019hui utile \u00e0 d\u2019autres. Les choses ont chang\u00e9. Le march\u00e9 du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 a explos\u00e9, la qualit\u00e9 des jeux publi\u00e9s a \u00e9galement augment\u00e9. L\u2019\u00e9dition, la distribution, la fabrication, l\u2019illustration, la critique et bien s\u00fbr la cr\u00e9ation, toute la fili\u00e8re s\u2019est professionnalis\u00e9e. Cette \u00e9volution, que j\u2019ai v\u00e9cue avec une certaine r\u00e9ticence puisque j\u2019ai attendu ma retraite de l\u2019\u00e9ducation nationale pour faire de la cr\u00e9ation ludique mon activit\u00e9 principale, peut justifier que l\u2019on ne devienne plus toujours auteur de jeux comme c\u2019\u00e9tait le cas il y a quarante, ou m\u00eame il y a seulement vingt ans. Cette professionnalisation de notre activit\u00e9 rendrait plus difficile l\u2019apprentissage sur le tas et justifierait donc l\u2019apparition d\u2019une sorte de \u201cformation professionnelle\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019autre raison de mon scepticisme initial est la nature relativement peu technique de la cr\u00e9ation ludique. S\u2019il existe des conservatoires de musique et de danse, des structures comme les Beaux-Arts pour les arts plastiques, des \u00e9coles de cin\u00e9ma, d\u2019animation, ou de jeux videos, c\u2019est parce que ces activit\u00e9s complexes ont un contenu technique tr\u00e8s important. On peut heureusement encore devenir musicien ou cin\u00e9aste sans \u00eatre pass\u00e9 par des formations d\u00e9di\u00e9es, mais c\u2019est rare parce que difficile dans des domaines o\u00f9 la technicit\u00e9 continue \u00e0 augmenter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, par comparaison, me semble assez peu technique, plus proche de l\u2019\u00e9criture litt\u00e9raire, de la cuisine ou du bricolage, mais c\u2019est peut-\u00eatre une illusion due au fait que j\u2019ai moi-m\u00eame assimil\u00e9 tr\u00e8s progressivement, et sans en \u00eatre bien conscient, ces aspects techniques. J\u2019imagine assez facilement le contenu, en termes d\u2019entrainement et de connaissances, d\u2019une formation de quelques ann\u00e9es dans la musique ou le jeu video, cela me semble moins pertinent pour le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, et peut m\u00eame faire craindre une sorte de \u201cformatage\u201d nuisant \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et \u00e0 l\u2019originalit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En litt\u00e9rature, et c\u2019est sans doute la comparaison la plus pertinente, des universit\u00e9s, surtout am\u00e9ricaines, proposent depuis longtemps des cursus presque enti\u00e8rement consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 la \u201dcreative writing\u201d. C\u2019est plus rare en Europe, o\u00f9 cela se limite \u00e0 quelques cours dans des fili\u00e8res litt\u00e9raires plus g\u00e9n\u00e9rales.<br>J\u2019ai donc men\u00e9 une petite enqu\u00eate sur Internet, et ai , et ai d\u00e9couvert que les cours d\u2019\u00e9criture cr\u00e9ative n\u2019\u00e9taient pas le caca de taureau que j\u2019imaginais. De nombreux auteurs am\u00e9ricains, et parmi eux l\u2019un de mes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s, Raymond Carver, ont suivi ce type d\u2019enseignement. Un ami am\u00e9ricain m\u2019a par ailleurs fait remarquer qu\u2019ils \u00e9taient sans doute plus nombreux encore, beaucoup \u00e9vitant de mettre en avant une formation qui, dans le petit monde litt\u00e9raire anglo-saxon, pouvait \u00eatre un peu stigmatisante. J\u2019imagine ce qu\u2019il en est en Europe !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bref, forc\u00e9 de reconna\u00eetre, m\u00eame si je la regrette un peu, la professionnalisation du milieu ludique, et surpris d\u2019apprendre que ce type d\u2019enseignement \u00e9tait assez efficace en litt\u00e9rature, je pense maintenant qu\u2019une formation \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, mise en place par des gens inform\u00e9s et comp\u00e9tents, peut \u00eatre une bonne id\u00e9e. I have also, on occasion, given lectures in video-game schools, which usually and rightly consider that boardgame design is a neighboring activity worth knowing. I always have fun doing it, because I like speaking in public and I think I\u2019m a good teacher.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Like in many other domains, there are short discovery training courses, usually over one or two days, for adults interested in boardgames design. A few of them might be scams, but most offer an opportunity to get rid of some illusions, learn a few tricks and technics, and discover the realities of the boardgame market. I\u2019ve always thought this was a good idea.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One of the first advice I give to young game designers is to first find another job, a true job, and to keep it. I was therefore a bit surprised, and at first a bit skeptical, when I found out that there are now specific training cursus, sometimes over a few years, both in public universities and in private-owned schools, aimed at aspiring boardgames designers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The first reason for my initial wariness was my personal history and experience. There were no such schools when I was young, and even if there were, I would certainly not have been tempted to attend them. Like all the boardgames designers I know, even younger ones, I learned the job as I went along, starting with toying with my favorite games. When asked how one can become a boardgames designer, I usually answer \u201cwith playing games\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Of course, what didn\u2019t exist and would not have tempted me can today be useful to others. Times have changed. The boardgames market has exploded, has become a real industry, and the quality of the games published has vastly increased. Publishing, distribution, printing, illustration, reviewing and, of course, boardgames design have been professionalized. I was a bit wary of this evolution, which explains why I have waited until I retire from my day job as a teacher, last year, to become a full time boardgames designer, but I cannot deny it. It explains why there are now more ways for becoming a boardgames designer than there were forty or even twenty years ago. And if our activity has been professionalized, technicised, learning on the go becomes more difficult and there is now room for professional training.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Another reason for my initial skepticism is the low level of technicality of boardgames design. There are music, drama, movies, graphic arts, animation and even video-games schools because these activities have a high level of specific technicality. One can still become a professional musician or movie director without having been through a specific training, but it has become are in domains whose technical nature has regularly increased.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In comparison, boardgame design feels to me more freeform, more akin to literary writing or cooking, but this feeling might be due to the fact that I learned the technicalities on the go, without being really conscious of it. Anyway, while I can imagine, both in terms of training and theory, the content of a two or three years training in music or video games, it feels to me less relevant for boardgames. One can even fear a kind of formatting, dangerous in a domain where originality is critical.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The most relevant comparison is probably with literature. For vert long, US universities offer cursus focused on \u201ccreative writing\u201d. This is not that usual in Europe, where such courses are usually a small part of a more general literary cursus.<br>I made a small internet enquiry and, to my astonishment, found out that creative writing courses were not the bullshit I was imagining, and that several great American writers, including one of my favorite short stories writer, Raymond Carver, went through a creative writing training. An American friend also pointed out to me that there were probably even more, many writers avoiding highlighting a training which, in the small Anglo-Saxon literary world, could be a little stigmatizing.. You can imagine what it could be in Europe!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anyway, even when I regret it a bit, I must acknowledge the professionnalisation of the little boardgaming world. Having learned, to my surprise, that such a training could be efficient in literature, I now see no reason to dismiss it for boardgames, providing it is done by informed and competent people.
