Elephant Rally <\/em>est une nouvelle version de Formula E,<\/em> un jeu de course d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phants que j\u2019avais con\u00e7u avec Sergio Halaban et Andr\u00e9 Zatz, les deux auteurs br\u00e9siliens de Sheriff of Nottingham<\/em> et quelques autres jeux. C’est un jeu de parcours assez m\u00e9chant, o\u00f9 il faut bien g\u00e9rer sa main de cartes, un peu dans l\u2019esprit d\u2019Ave Cesar<\/em> ou du Li\u00e8vre et la Tortue<\/em> – un \u00e9l\u00e9phant, c\u2019est large et t\u00eatu et cela a vite fait de bloquer la route. <\/p>\n\n\n

Voici ce que j\u2019\u00e9crivais \u00e0 propos du jeu lors de la sortie de la premi\u00e8re version, en 2014 (l\u2019article complet est ici) :\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assez r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, je re\u00e7ois des emails dans lesquels des auteurs de jeux connus ou inconnus me proposent de travailler avec eux sur un projet de jeu, souvent d\u00e9j\u00e0 assez avanc\u00e9. Lorsqu\u2019il y a des zombies ou quinze pages de r\u00e8gles, je r\u00e9ponds poliment que d\u00e9sol\u00e9, ce n\u2019est pas mon style, mais bonne chance quand m\u00eame. Dans les autres cas, je jette un coup d\u2019\u0153il avant, le plus souvent, de r\u00e9pondre poliment que, d\u00e9sol\u00e9, \u00e7a a l\u2019air bien int\u00e9ressant mais je n\u2019ai vraiment pas le temps de me lancer dans un nouveau projet \u2013 mais bonne chance quand m\u00eame. Et puis, une ou deux fois par an, quand aussi bien le sujet que les m\u00e9canismes m\u2019amusent, quand j\u2019ai le temps, et quand les auteurs ont l\u2019air sympas, je r\u00e9ponds pourquoi pas.
D\u00e9but 2011, j\u2019ai ainsi re\u00e7u une proposition d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Zatz et Sergio Halaban, auteurs br\u00e9siliens de deux petits jeux de bluff que j\u2019appr\u00e9cie beaucoup, Hart an der Grenze<\/em> et Sultan<\/em>. Ils y pr\u00e9sentaient Indian Derby<\/em>, un jeu de course d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phant qu\u2019ils avaient r\u00e9alis\u00e9 quelques ann\u00e9es auparavant, qui avait manqu\u00e9 de peu \u00eatre publi\u00e9 par plusieurs \u00e9diteurs, et auquel ils pensaient qu\u2019un regard neuf pourrait apporter un plus. Le jeu m\u2019a tout de suite plu. Le th\u00e8me, une course d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phant, \u00e9tait original et amusant, et permettait d\u2019introduire des m\u00e9canismes de pouss\u00e9e inhabituels dans les jeux de parcours. Le moteur du jeu, des cartes de d\u00e9placement et des cartes action, me convenait tr\u00e8s bien. Bref, nous avons quelque peu discut\u00e9, et nous sommes pench\u00e9s ensemble \u2013 via email, parce que le Br\u00e9sil, c\u2019est un peu loin \u2013 sur un jeu que je voulais rendre plus l\u00e9ger, plus rapide, plus m\u00e9chant. Apr\u00e8s avoir unifi\u00e9 le syst\u00e8me de gestion des cartes action et mouvement, simplifi\u00e9 les bousculades, ajout\u00e9 quelques actions th\u00e9matiques et amusantes, nous nous retrouv\u00e2mes quelques mois plus tard avec un jeu de course tactique et tr\u00e8s enlev\u00e9, un peu dans l\u2019esprit d\u2019Ave Cesar<\/em>, des bousculades, mais aussi des vaches sacr\u00e9es, des tapis volants, des tigres et des charmeurs de serpents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paru il y a maintenant 10 ans, en 2014, sans doute au mauvais moment et peut-\u00eatre chez le mauvais \u00e9diteur, Formula E <\/em>n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 qu\u2019un succ\u00e8s d\u2019estime. L\u2019\u00e9dition \u00e9tait belle, a re\u00e7u de bonnes critiques, mais ne s\u2019est gu\u00e8re vendue au del\u00e0 du tirage initial via Kickstarter.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dix ans plus tard, le jeu revient sous le nom d\u2019Elephant Rally<\/em> chez l\u2019un des principaux \u00e9diteurs br\u00e9silien, Conclave Editora. La version a \u00e9t\u00e9 astucieusement mise au go\u00fbt du jour par l\u2019\u00e9quipe br\u00e9silienne, les quatre plateaux du jeu d\u2019origine \u00e9tant remplac\u00e9s par un syst\u00e8me de circuit modulable, permettant plus de vari\u00e9t\u00e9 avec moins de mat\u00e9riel. Elephant Rally<\/em> n\u2019est pour l\u2019instant disponible qu\u2019au Br\u00e9sil, mais si quelqu\u2019un veut le publier dans une autre langue, il n\u2019y a que les r\u00e8gles \u00e0 traduire et cela peut certainement s\u2019arranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elephant Rally is a new version of <\/em>Formula E, an elephant racing game I designed with Brazilian designers Sergio Halaban and Andre Zatz, now mostly known for <\/em>Sheriff of Nottingham. It\u2019s a card driven racing game with lots of opportunities to meddle with rivals plans, in the style of good old <\/em>Hare and Tortoise or <\/em>Ave Caesar. Elephants are large and stubborn, which means they can easily block the road.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

I regularly receive emails from both well known and completely unknown game designers asking me if I would like to work with them on some design, usually already well advanced. When it\u2019s about zombies, or has fifteen or more pages of rules, I answer that I\u2019m sorry, that\u2019s not really my kind of game, but good luck anyway. In all other cases, I have a look and usually answer that I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m already overbooked and wouldn\u2019t find the time to start a new project, but good luck anyway. Once or twice every year, when both the setting and the game systems sound exciting, when I have time, and when the authors seem to be nice guys, I answer why not, let\u2019s discuss the game.
Early in 2011, I got an email from Andr\u00e9 Zatz and Sergio Halaban, the Brazilian authors of two light double-guessing games I really like, <\/em>Hart and der Grenze and <\/em>Sultan. The subject of their email, <\/em>Indian Derby was an elephant racing game they had designed a few years ago, which had raised some interest from several publishers but ultimately hadn\u2019t been selected for publication. They wanted to rework it, and were thinking that a fresh look by a designer who wasn\u2019t involved in the original design, could help.\u00a0 I liked the game idea at once. The storyline, an Indian elephant race game, was new, and allowed for rules about pushing\u2013something unusual in a racing game, and for fun thematic events. I had long wanted to design a card driven race game, so this was a good opportunity to jump in. We discussed the game and worked together via email\u2013since Brazil is far from France\u2013on new rules and events to make the game lighter, faster and nastier. We simplified the card management system and the jostling rules, we added some event cards, and we ended with a very dynamic and tactical racing game, in the style of <\/em>Ave Caesar (one of my all-time favorites), but with lots of jostling and crushing, and also holy cows, flying carpets, snake charmers, monkeys and tigers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formula E was published 10 years ago, in 2014, probably at the wrong time by the wrong publisher. It was a critical success but didn\u2019t really sell after the initial Kickstarter print run.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Ten years later, the game comes back as <\/em>Elephant Rally, published by one of the main Brazilian boardgames publishers, Conclave Editora. The game has been cleverly updated by the Brazilian team, the four tracks being replaced with a modular track, allowing for more variety with fewer components. <\/em>Elephant Rally is only available so far in Brazil, but if someone is interested in localizing it elsewhere, it should not be a problem. There\u2019s no text on the cards, the only part needing a translation is the rules.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
