Chaque ann\u00e9e, l\u2019attribution du \u00ab&nbsp;Spiel&nbsp;\u00bb et de ses variations, le \u00ab&nbsp;KennerSpiel&nbsp;\u00bb pour les jeux un peu complexes et le \u00ab&nbsp;KinderSpiel&nbsp;\u00bb pour ceux destin\u00e9s \u00e0 un public plus jeune, donne lieu dans le microcosme ludique \u00e0 bien des sp\u00e9culations puis, une fois que les laur\u00e9ats sont connus, \u00e0 quelques petites r\u00e2leries de ceux qui n\u2019appr\u00e9cient pas tel ou tel jeu, tel ou tel style. Cette ann\u00e9e, une pol\u00e9mique plus politique a ent\u00e2ch\u00e9 l\u2019attribution du KennerSpiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Je suis g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement tr\u00e8s circonspect quant \u00e0 l\u2019exploitation de th\u00e8mes politiques et sociaux trop pr\u00e9gnants et s\u00e9rieux dans le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Je m\u2019en m\u00e9fie parce que cela donne le plus souvent des jeux ennuyeux, ce qui ne semble pas \u00eatre le cas de Daybreak, mais surtout parce que cela rompt avec la fonction sociale du jeu qui est de nous permettre de sortir du r\u00e9el, de faire un break tout en restant en soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Je ne suis donc \u00e0 priori pas trop attir\u00e9 par Daybreak, de Matt Leacock et Matteo Menapace, un jeu o\u00f9 l\u2019on d\u00e9carbone la plan\u00e8te qui a obtenu le KennerSpiel. Les enjeux \u00e9cologiques et politiques de la fabrication des jeux, par exemple, sont un sujet de plus en plus important, auquel, comme par hasard, on repense \u00e0 chaque fois qu\u2019une crise fait augmenter le co\u00fbt des transports par container depuis la Chine. La guerre en Ukraine, intervenue au moment m\u00eame o\u00f9 des jeux et des auteurs ukrainiens commen\u00e7aient \u00e0 gagner en popularit\u00e9, en a \u00e9t\u00e9 un autre exemple. La pol\u00e9mique de cette ann\u00e9e en est une autre illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daybreak a donc quelques ambitions politiques, mais elles sont tr\u00e8s consensuelles et ce ne sont pas d\u2019elles qu\u2019il est question ici. L\u2019un des auteurs, Matteo Menapace, a arbor\u00e9 durant la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie un badge extr\u00eamement visible o\u00f9 le motif de la past\u00e8que, utilis\u00e9 par les Palestiniens car c\u2019est une sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 locale dont les couleurs sont aussi celle de leur drapeau, figurait sur une carte de la Palestine comprenant le territoire d\u2019Isra\u00ebl. Consid\u00e9rant cela comme \u00e9tant non pas une marque de soutien au peuple palestinien \u00e9cras\u00e9 sous les bombes, mais bien un appel \u00e0 la destruction d\u2019Isra\u00ebl, donc \u00e0 la violence, et une prise de position que l\u2019on pouvait consid\u00e9rer comme antis\u00e9mite, le jury du Spiel des Jahres a exclu Matteo Manapace de tous ses futurs \u00e9v\u00e9nements. La r\u00e9ponse publique de Matteo Manapace, dans laquelle il fait mine de croire que le probl\u00e8me \u00e9tait le motif de la past\u00e8que et non la forme de son badge, n\u2019a gu\u00e8re fait avancer les choses. Il s\u2019en est suivi, sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux, de longs dialogues de sourds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beaucoup ont fait remarquer, avec raison, que cette pol\u00e9mique r\u00e9v\u00e9lait surtout la sensibilit\u00e9 extr\u00eame, et pour d\u2019excellentes raisons, du public allemand d\u00e8s qu\u2019il est question des juifs et, par extension, d\u2019Isra\u00ebl. Je ne sais pas tr\u00e8s bien si Matteo Manapace est anglais, am\u00e9ricain ou italien&nbsp;: son nom est italien, mais je suis bien plac\u00e9 pour savoir que cela ne veut rien dire, et il s\u2019exprime sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux en excellent anglais. Quoi qu\u2019il en soit, il aurait, par maladresse, n\u00e9glig\u00e9 ce contexte particulier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est bien s\u00fbr vrai, mais il me semble que cette diff\u00e9rence de sensibilit\u00e9 est, en Europe au moins, autant g\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle que g\u00e9ographique. Je ne suis pas allemand, mais ma r\u00e9action imm\u00e9diate et spontan\u00e9e en voyant les images de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a \u00e9t\u00e9 la m\u00eame que celle du jury du Spiel des Jahres. Ma g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9e dans le souvenir de la guerre et a entendu des histoires de voisins disparus, voit avant tout dans Isra\u00ebl un \u00e9tat refuge pour les juifs rejet\u00e9s d\u2019un peu partout, ce qu\u2019il est. Cela est vrai m\u00eame pour quelqu\u2019un qui, comme moi, a grandi dans un milieu familial tr\u00e8s anticolonialiste o\u00f9 le h\u00e9ros politique num\u00e9ro un \u00e9tait le colonel Nasser. Les plus jeunes, qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9s dans le souvenir des ann\u00e9es soixante et de la d\u00e9colonisation, voient avant tout dans Isra\u00ebl un \u00e9tat colonial, ce qu\u2019il est tout autant. Personne n\u2019a tort car tout le monde a raison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Je digresse un peu, mais il me semble qu\u2019une synth\u00e8se ne peut se faire qu\u2019en acceptant que, historiquement, Isra\u00ebl est les deux, \u00e0 la fois refuge et \u00e9tat colonial. Nous avons affaire, un peu comme dans le cas de l\u2019Afrique du Sud avant 1994, \u00e0 une colonie sans m\u00e9tropole, d\u2019o\u00f9 les colons ne peuvent pas partir, et o\u00f9 le probl\u00e8me n\u2019est donc pas de savoir qui doit rester mais comment organiser la cohabitation, si possible dans un \u00e9tat unique et commun pour \u00e9viter de recommencer \u00e0 se taper dessus dans quelques ann\u00e9es. Je n\u2019ai pas l\u2019impression que l\u2019on soit bien parti pour cela, ni d\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, ni de l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beaucoup, notamment dans la discussion sur ce sujet sur le forum du boardgamegeek, o\u00f9 la plupart des intervenants sont am\u00e9ricains, semblent penser que le jury allemand du SdJ a surinterpr\u00eat\u00e9 le badge de Matteao Menapace, et que la d\u00e9cision de l\u2019exclure de ses futurs \u00e9v\u00e9nements a \u00e9t\u00e9 excessive. Si c\u2019est le cas, peut-\u00eatre aurait-il \u00e9t\u00e9 possible de s\u2019entendre sur un communiqu\u00e9 commun, je ne sais pas du tout ce qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 discut\u00e9. N\u00e9anmoins, je suis incapable de condamner une r\u00e9action qui, spontan\u00e9ment, aurait sans doute aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 la mienne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Une autre pol\u00e9mique plus discr\u00e8te a ent\u00e2ch\u00e9 l\u2019attribution des prix cette ann\u00e9e, et je pensais originellement l\u2019aborder \u00e9galement dans cet article. Apr\u00e8s en avoir parl\u00e9 avec les personnes concern\u00e9es, qui souhaitent toutes calmer le jeu, j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de n&#8217;en rien faire et ne m\u2019exprimerait plus \u00e0 ce sujet. The German game of the year award was for very long the only boardgame award with a measurable impact on sales and is still, by far, the most important and the most discussed. Every year, speculations rage first about who will get the Spiel and its variations, the \u201cKennerSpiel\u201d for complex games and the \u201cKinderSpiel\u201d for children ones. Once the result is known, there are also recriminations by those who dislike this or that game, or that style of game. This year, there was also a more serious polemic about the Kenner Spiel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I am always very wary of games with a too serious and significant social or political setting. I am wary because most of them are boring games, which doesn\u2019t seem to be the case with Daybreak, but also because it breaks with what I view as the main social function of games, giving us an opportunity to escape reality for a while, to take a break while still being in a friendly social context. As an example, the ecological stakes of the manufacturing games are becoming important, and are discussed again\u2026 every time the shipping costs from China increase due to some international crisis. The war in Ukraine, just when some Ukrainian games were starting to be really popular in Europe, is an other occasion to remind us that, even if games are part of our lives, we don\u2019t live in the world of games. This year\u2019s polemic is another striking example.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Daybreak has a political discourse, but a very consensual one, not polemical in any way, and it is not the issue. One of the designers, Matteo Menapace, wore during the award ceremony a flashy badge with a watermelon pattern, which is used as a symbol by Palestinians because this local treat has the same colors as their flag, on a map of Palestine including the state of Israel. The jury interpreted this not as a simple show of solidarity with Palestinians crushed with bombs, but as a statement in favor of the destruction of Israel, and therefore a call for violence which could be considered antisemitic. The Spiel Jury therefore decided to ban Matteo Menapace from all its future events. Matteo Menapace\u2019s public answer, in which he failed to acknowledge that the issue was not the pattern but the shape of his badge, didn\u2019t help. There has been since many arguments on social networks, most of them what we call in French \u201cdialogue of the deaf\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Many have rightly argued that this polemic was due to the extreme sensitivity of German public opinion to everything involving jews and, by extension, Israel. This is obviously true, and for very good reasons. I don\u2019t know if Matteo Menapace is English, American or Italian. He has an Italian name, but I\u2019m well placed to know this doesn\u2019t mean anything, and talks in perfect English on social networks. Anyway, the idea is that ignoring this context was, if not plain wrong, at least extremely clumsy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is certainly true, but I think the difference in sensibility is, in Europe at least, as much a question of generation as of nationality. I am not a German, but my spontaneous first reaction when seeing Matteo Menapace\u2019s badge on the images of the SdJ ceremony was the same as the jury\u2019s one. My generation has been raised in the memory and recollection of WWII, with stories of disappearing neighbors. We therefore see Israel first and foremost as a safe haven for Jews rejected from everywhere \u2013 which it is. This is true even for someone like me, raised in a fiercely anticolonial family where one of the top political heroes was colonel Nasser. Younger people, raised in the memory of the sixties and the decolonization wars, see Israel, first and foremost, as a colonial state, which it is. No one is wrong because everyone is right.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Let\u2019s digress a bit. I think the only possible synthesis is to accept that Israel is both, safe haven and colonial state. A bit like in South Africa before 1994, it is a colony without a homeland, from where colonists cannot leave. The true issue is, like it was in South Africa, not to determine who will stay but to find a way to organize cohabitation, if possible in a single state to avoid fighting again in a few years. Unfortunately, we don\u2019t seem to be moving in this direction.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Many in the online discussion of the event, especially on the BGG where most contributors are from the US, seem to think that the SdJ jury decision to exclude Matteo Menapace from its events was excessive.
