Il est cosign\u00e9 avec Jun Sasaki, qui est aussi le patron de ce petit \u00e9diteur japonais dont les petites boites color\u00e9es sont ais\u00e9es \u00e0 rep\u00e9rer dans les boutiques. <br>J&#8217;ai toujours beaucoup aim\u00e9 la gamme d&#8217;Oink Games, avec ses petits jeux souvent tr\u00e8s originaux, aux r\u00e8gles et au graphisme minimaliste, et cela faisait des ann\u00e9es que j&#8217;essayais de caser un jeu chez eux. J&#8217;en avais m\u00eame imagin\u00e9 un sp\u00e9cialement con\u00e7u pour leur format de boite, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2020\/08\/20\/maracas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11666\">Maracas<\/a>,<\/em> qui a finalement termin\u00e9 chez Blue Orange. Je suis donc particuli\u00e8rement heureux de Whale to Look, qui semble en outre tr\u00e8s bien se vendre. <br>J&#8217;en ai donc profit\u00e9 pour r\u00e9aliser une petite interview de Jun Sasaki, que voici. J&#8217;avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 crois\u00e9 Jun aux \u00c9tats-Unis, \u00e0 la Gen Con, puis \u00e0 deux reprises au Game Market d&#8217;Osaka. Quels jeux vous ont marqu\u00e9 et donn\u00e9 envie de cr\u00e9er les v\u00f4tres&nbsp;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-71ba31351e2bb22b042f283e01769d29\" style=\"color:#006fb5\"><strong>Jun :<\/strong> Vers 2005, j&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 jouer \u00e0 des jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 autres que les classiques Monopoly et Catan. J\u2019\u00e9tais \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque impliqu\u00e9 dans le d\u00e9veloppement de jeux vid\u00e9o. La simplicit\u00e9 de jeux comme <em><a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2012\/05\/01\/incan-gold-diamant\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"504\">Diamant<\/a><\/em> ou <em>Le poker des cafards<\/em> m\u2019a d\u2019autant plus impressionn\u00e9 qu\u2019elle allait \u00e0 l\u2019inverse de la tendance des jeux videos, qui devenaient de plus en plus lourds et longs. Dans les ann\u00e9es qui ont suivi, j&#8217;ai jou\u00e9 \u00e0 des centaines de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 modernes et, vers 2009-2010, j&#8217;ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d&#8217;essayer d\u2019en cr\u00e9er un moi-m\u00eame. C\u2019est de cette envie qu\u2019est n\u00e9 Oink Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e45bb08605ce6c37c3bbbea619f0d4b4\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>Quand avez-vous cr\u00e9\u00e9 Oink&nbsp;? Qu\u2019est-ce qui vous a pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 vouloir cr\u00e9er vos propres jeux, et \u00e0 vouloir les publier&nbsp;? Avez-vous cr\u00e9\u00e9 Oink d\u2019embl\u00e9e pour publier vos propres jeux, ou avez-vous d\u2019abord d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de vous lancer dans l\u2019\u00e9dition de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9&nbsp;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fb10fed73b3ead502e4fc1d21aa4d0ed\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: J\u2019ai choisi la marque Oink Games pour pr\u00e9senter mes premi\u00e8res cr\u00e9ations au Tokyo Game Market en 2010. Je n\u2019avais jamais publi\u00e9 de jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 auparavant, et ai \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sagr\u00e9ablement surpris par les co\u00fbts d\u2019impression des cartes \u00e0 jouer. J\u2019ai tr\u00e8s vite compris que, m\u00eame si mon jeu se vendait bien lors du Game Market, j\u2019allais finir dans le rouge. Il faut en effet imprimer de plus grandes quantit\u00e9s pour obtenir co\u00fbts de production assez bas. Afin de continuer \u00e0 vendre mes jeux apr\u00e8s le Game Market, j\u2019ai enregistr\u00e9 Oink Games en tant que soci\u00e9t\u00e9, ajout\u00e9 un code-barres sur les bo\u00eetes, et me suis lanc\u00e9 dans la distribution. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019est n\u00e9e la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Oink games, qui existe encore aujourd\u2019hui. Vous avez fait le choix inverse, celui de publier et produire vous-m\u00eame pour le monde entier. Quand et pourquoi avez-vous fait ce choix&nbsp;? faites-vous encore la plupart de vos ventes au Japan&nbsp;? &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b716037d0223b59f146462300559b3e\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: A l\u2019automne 2010, mon jeu <em>Yabu no naka (dans un bosquet<\/em>), a \u00e9t\u00e9 remarqu\u00e9 par un \u00e9diteur europ\u00e9en, Asmod\u00e9e, qui l\u2019a publi\u00e9 en Europe, sous le nom de Hattari (bluff en japonais), en changeant la taille de la boite et les illustrations. Je ne m\u2019y suis bien s\u00fbr pas oppos\u00e9, pensant qu\u2019ils avaient leurs m\u00e9thodes et connaissaient le march\u00e9 europ\u00e9en, mais je ne pouvais m\u2019emp\u00eacher de me demander pourquoi ce jeu ne pouvait pas trouver sa place avec les illustrations d\u2019origine. Les ventes en Europe ont \u00e9t\u00e9 m\u00e9diocres, ce qui n\u2019a fait que renforcer mes doutes. Ce fut un peu la m\u00eame chose lorsque, en 2013, <em>Kobayakawa<\/em> a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9galement publi\u00e9 en Europe. Ou un autre que je ne suspecte pas&nbsp;?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a0aa5c181fb35d16140b98a027cbf2a8\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: <em>Deep Sea Adventure<\/em> est celui des jeux Oink qui s\u2019est le mieux vendu, mais <em>Scout<\/em> est en passe de le rattraper. Ensuite vient <em>A Fake Artist Goes to New York<\/em>. Au Japon, <em>Nine Tiles<\/em> se vend \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s bien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17e95789aef5bddf794cc17a4fb5cb5e\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>Les jeux Oink ont un look tr\u00e8s particulier, avec de petites boites et un graphisme extr\u00eamement simple. Pourquoi ce choix&nbsp;? Vos petites boites collent parfaitement avec l\u2019un des clich\u00e9s les plus r\u00e9pandus en Occident sur la culture japonaise, celui du minimalisme. Pour vous, le minimalisme japonais est-il une r\u00e9alit\u00e9 culturelle, ou juste un fantasme occidental&nbsp;? &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bde246408ec79e21cc1c7c47d01c3b18\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: J\u2019appr\u00e9cie, en effet, les choses simples, \u00e9pur\u00e9es, minimales. Je me sens proche de la mani\u00e8re traditionnelle japonaise de concevoir les temples, et de la philosophie zen. It is cosigned with Jun Sasaki, the boss of this small Japanese publisher whose small brightly colored boxes are easy to spot in game shops. <br>I&#8217;ve always liked the Oink Games line. The games are often really original, with simple rules and cute minimal art, and I&#8217;ve been trying to land a game there for years. I even designed one specifically for their box format, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2020\/08\/20\/maracas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11666\">Maracas<\/a><em>, which was finally published by Blue Orange. Having a game published there is therefore an achievement, even more since the game seems to sell well.<br>I therefore seized the oportunity to ask Jun Sasaki a few questions. I have met him once at Gen Con, years ago, then twice at the Osaka Game Market. Since when do you play boardgames? At that time, I was already involved in video game development. I was very much impressed by the simplicity, the straightforwardness of games like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2012\/05\/01\/incan-gold-diamant\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"504\">Incan Gold<\/a><\/em> and <em>Cockroach Poker,<\/em> all the more because it went completely opposite to the trend in videogames, which were becoming longer and more complex. Over the next few years, I played hundreds of modern board games, and around 2009-2010, I thought of designing one myself. This was the beginning of Oink Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ff5586efc7a78a84026552e181ec2bcf\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>When did you create Oink? What brought you into boardgame design and boardgame publishing? Did you start the company to publish your own designs, or did you first decide to start a publishing company?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-804ab594c034ecc2ad34399157f606c3\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: I chose the <em>Oink Games<\/em> brand name for selling my first games at the 2010 Tokyo Game Market. I had never published a game before, and was appalled by the cost of printing cards. I realized that it meant that, even if my game sold dozens at the Game Market, I would probably end up in the red. To keep on selling after the Game Market, I registered Oink Games as a company and added barcodes for distribution. This became the Oink Games company which still exists today. When and why did you decide to start directly selling games out of Japan? Are most of your sales still done in Japan?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b3ae385c371a8d850a398b13990ee5d7\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: In late 2010, my game<em> Yabu no naka (In a Grove)<\/em> caught the attention of a European publisher. It was published in Europe by Asmodee, under the name <em>Hattari<\/em> (bluff in Japanese), with a different artwork and box size. I didn\u2019t complain at that time, thinking that they had their ways and knew the European market better, but I already wondered if this game could not stand the competition with its original artwork. Sales in Europe were disappointing, which deepened the question. The same thought occurred to me when <em>Kobayakawa<\/em> was released in Europe in 2013. Why this choice? Your small boxes fit very well in one of the Western clich\u00e9s about Japanese culture, that of minimalism. Do you think Japanese minimalism is really a thing, or is it just Western fantasy?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5178457d0f05b60adacd87bddeac6873\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: I like a simple, pared down, minimal style, and I empathize with things like the traditional Japanese temple building style and the zen philosophy. Am I right? Does this mean you will now stay with your emblematic line of small boxes? Or do you have other projects for Oink?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c1f348c9e490f5b11b40585288de6bc6\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: It&#8217;s not that &#8220;we tried to make big boxes and it didn&#8217;t work out.&#8221; Even now, if we have a game suitable for a big box, we are willing to release it in a big box. However, I like the Oink Games small, minimal, uniform boxes. If that results in Oink Games&#8217; uniqueness, and in sales, I see no reason to change our approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2eef13a0c1e21283f1ce6c9bd98446b7\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>More or less half of the games published by Oink have Japanese designers, and the other half Western designers. Do you think there are differences in the way we design games? In the way we play them?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-903a3f92a4f48aaf02774e9b0f616e51\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: In abstract terms, it seems to me that Japanese game design is inward-facing. Conversely, Western game design seem outward-facing. I think both have good points. More specifically, Japanese designers seem to create works for themselves and those close to them, while Western designers aim at a wider audience. However, this is just the impression I get, and I might be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-738e191f8c9e1b1922c031cb5061a35c\" style=\"color:#067708\">Brunos notes: The opposition between what\u2019s inward and outward facing is very often used by Japanese people, and it has a very general meaning. Anyway, even when I often consider what I think publishers are looking for, I always feel like I am also designing games mostly for me and my friends. And my personal feeling is that there is no significant difference in the way we design games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f5e26375cb4f774c6174513de2b4ef5e\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>Japan and Korea, now followed by other East-Asian countries, are representing an ever-growing part of the board gaming world &#8211; meaning gamers, publishers and designers. How do you explain this? Do you think it will continue growing?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ead99ec3b01cd1e7e8cf4da830b4ee4a\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: The culture of board games is now spreading to people in Asian countries as well, and many are therefore staring to design and publish games in their own countries. However, I think that the general public in Asia is still largely unaware of the charm and interest of boardgames. How do you decide if your own designs are worthy of being published? What did you like in my original Constellation prototype that you found interesting enough to develop it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6c123d738d12d78a7d111cb8c3833cb0\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: I have thought for quite long about decision making within uncertain information, so I had to be interested in this game. From the beginning, we felt it had a depth that made us want to play it again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-db3ddb77728dcb3179a8e8020ccf10f6\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>Looking at the back of my collection of Oink games, I notice that some of them are printed in Japan and some in China, with no visible difference between them. Do you print smaller print runs in Japan and bigger ones in China, or do you print some games in Japan and other ones in China depending on the components?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b28b3d08481b86c5b1eaadad3fc0cae5\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: The first print run, for which communication and short printing delays are critical, is usually made in Japan. Further print runs of thousands or tens of thousands of copies are usually made in China, where printing costs are lower. To maintain the same quality in either case, we communicate closely with the factory and repeatedly check the quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1545767ff71f59614881b539ce36fe9a\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>Since you print both in Japan and China, is the weak yen a good or a bad thing for Oink? If it goes on, do you think it will make manufacturing in Japan more interesting for Oink and maybe for other publishers? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-89d7dd12f7a04a3d9516f8353581933b\" style=\"color:#006fb5\">J: Printing costs in China are getting higher, but the profit on overseas sales is also increasing. &nbsp;There are both good and bad points, and the overall impact is not significant. There are many excellent printing companies in Japan, and I would like overseas publishers to consider them. Having now a game published by you, I\u2019ve been happily surprised by your sale numbers, which are not that small. So, how big is really Oink? How many people work for the company in Japan? I was doing everything by myself, from production to advertising and sales. I am however very grateful that there are more people around me who can help me with their opinions. As for video games, it has always been a team effort, both then and now.<br>Annual sales have increased 15 times over the past 10 years. Personally, I have almost no client work now, and I am able to focus on game development at Oink Games. My tastes in games didn\u2019t change much either. However, I regret having less time to play games, due to changes in my family and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5001e917c2927b76dc80dda05477329a\" style=\"color:#067708\">B: <em>What are your relations with other Japanese game publishers? I was once approached for an acquisition of our videogame activity, &nbsp;but I declined the offer. If such an offer were made to us in the near future, I don\u2019t think we would consider seriously becoming a subsidiary of a bigger group. As it is, the company is profitable enough to keep on developing and producing games as it has done so far. The goal is not to make tons of money, but to keep on making games in an enjoyable way.
