Le poker ne se prenait pas encore trop au s\u00e9rieux, ce qui permettait \u00e0 chacun de le mettre \u00e0 sa sauce sans que quiconque ne crie \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00e9r\u00e9sie. Les auteurs et \u00e9diteurs de <em>Cosmic Encounter<\/em> eux-m\u00eames encourageaient les joueurs \u00e0 s\u2019approprier leur cr\u00e9ation en vendant des paquets de cartes vierges. Bien s\u00fbr, cela \u00e9tait rendu plus facile par le petit nombre de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 que nous connaissions, des jeux que nous jouions donc r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement et maitrisions bien. Je ne sais si notre petit groupe de joueurs \u00e9tait l\u2019un des seuls \u00e0 fonctionner ainsi, et si c\u2019est pour cela que nous sommes ensuite devenus des auteurs de jeu, ou si tous les joueurs traitaient alors les jeux avec autant de l\u00e9g\u00e8ret\u00e9, n\u2019h\u00e9sitant pas comme \u00e0 en modifier, parfois en cours de partie, les r\u00e8gles qui ne nous plaisaient pas. Dans les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt-dix, c\u2019est avec Pierre Rosenthal que j\u2019avais bricol\u00e9 une extension maison de <em>Magic the Gathering<\/em>, et Wizards of the Coast nous avait pay\u00e9 pour pouvoir en r\u00e9utiliser les id\u00e9es dans leurs futures extensions. Les personnages et quartiers de la \u201cgrosse boite\u201d de <em>Citadelles<\/em> proviennent ainsi en grande partie des id\u00e9es d\u2019un fan du jeu, Robin Corr\u00e8ze, qui a su y porter un regard neuf. Beaucoup des nouveaux personnages de Mascarade ont aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 imagin\u00e9s par des amis ou des fans du jeu. Lorsqu\u2019un jeu s\u2019y pr\u00e8te, j\u2019encourage mes \u00e9diteurs, s\u2019il reste quelques cartes sur les planches d\u2019impression, \u00e0 ajouter quelques cartes vierges, mais je n\u2019ai jamais eu beaucoup de succ\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019une des raisons pour lesquelles je m\u2019amuse moins aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 bidouiller les jeux des autres auteurs est que ma pratique du jeu, et me semble-t-il la pratique du jeu en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, est devenue plus dispers\u00e9e. On joue certes autant, mais on joue \u00e0 des jeux de plus en plus nombreux, trouvant plus de plaisir dans la d\u00e9couverte que dans l\u2019approfondissement, ce qui peut \u00eatre un peu frustrant. Une autre raison est peut-\u00eatre que les joueurs prennent aujourd\u2019hui les jeux un peu trop au s\u00e9rieux \u2013 c\u2019est vrai des th\u00e8mes, je l\u2019ai souvent \u00e9crit ici, mais c\u2019est aussi vrai des m\u00e9canismes que l\u2019on n\u2019ose pas trop toucher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour qu\u2019un jeu me donne l\u2019envie de le bricoler, d\u2019inventer des cartes et des effets, il faut donc qu\u2019il soit riche, ouvert aux extensions et d\u00e9veloppement, tout en restant suffisamment simple pour que quelques parties permettent de saisir la logique qui le sous-tend, les leviers \u00e0 manipuler et, ce faisant, les \u00e9quilibres \u00e0 respecter. Ce jeu de draft, dans lequel les joueurs construisent peu \u00e0 peu des combinaisons de cartes afin de marquer le plus de points possibles, n&#8217;apporte rien de vraiment nouveau ni dans son th\u00e8me, ni dans ses m\u00e9canismes, mais il cr\u00e9e une sensation de profondeur, de vari\u00e9t\u00e9 et d\u2019imbrication entre ses \u00e9l\u00e9ments avec tr\u00e8s peu de m\u00e9canismes, des r\u00e8gles simples et une impressionnante fluidit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il y a eu tellement d&#8217;innovation dans les m\u00e9canismes ludiques depuis trente ans que la meilleure des nouveaut\u00e9s ne consiste plus tant aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 faire des choses diff\u00e9rentes qu&#8217;\u00e0 faire les m\u00eames choses mais de mani\u00e8re plus fluide, plus l\u00e9g\u00e8re. Je suis de plus en plus convaincu que, face aux fantasmes identitaires et aux tentations du repli sur soi, la seule d\u00e9marche culturelle positive qui ait aujourd\u2019hui du sens est cet universalisme d\u00e9sinvolte, qui enchev\u00eatre tout sans rien prendre au s\u00e9rieux. Quatre illustrateurs se sont partag\u00e9 les cartes du jeu, Jiahui Gao dessinant les cr\u00e9atures de l\u2019eau, Gautier Maia celles de la terre, Stefano Martinuz celles du feu et Erica Tormen celles de l\u2019air. Ils ont tous fait quelques dragons, parce que c\u2019est quand m\u00eame trop classe de dessiner un dragon. Dans les deux jeux, la combinaison de principes extr\u00eamement simples, de r\u00e8gles peu nombreuses et d\u2019interactions presque illimit\u00e9es cr\u00e9e un effet \u00ab&nbsp;bo\u00eete \u00e0 outils&nbsp;\u00bb, donnant envie de bricoler, d\u2019imaginer ses pouvoirs, ses cartes. Pour <em>Cosmic<\/em>, on pouvait fantasmer sur les races extra-terrestres, pour <em>The Vale of Eternity<\/em>, on peut faire appel aux innombrables cr\u00e9atures de tous les folklores et mythologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les effets de la plupart des cartes n\u2019ont pas de lien \u00e9vident avec la nature des cr\u00e9atures repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es, mais cela encore facilite les bidouillages. Il \u00e9tait possible d\u2019acheter des cartes vierges de <em>Cosmic Encounter<\/em>, sur lesquelles les joueurs pouvaient laisser libre cours \u00e0 leur imagination. La premi\u00e8re, Artefacts, est d\u00e9j\u00e0 annonc\u00e9e. Certaines n&#8217;apporteront seulement de nouvelles cartes, d\u2019autres introduiront un ou deux m\u00e9canismes originaux, les possibilit\u00e9s semblent infinies, il faut juste prendre garde \u00e0 ne pas trop compliquer les choses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f3edc1\">Et donc, apr\u00e8s quelques tests, voici mes 24 nouvelles cartes pour Vale of Eternity. J&#8217;ai essay\u00e9 de faire quelques trucs un peu nouveaux sans ajouter de r\u00e8gles ou de m\u00e9canismes au jeu. Il me semblait que le jeu favorisait un peu trop les strat\u00e9gies construites autour dun &#8220;moteur&#8221; \u00e0 point de victoire montant progressivement en puissance, au d\u00e9triment des tactiques &#8220;coups d&#8217;un soir&#8221; s&#8217;effor\u00e7ant de scorer un maximum \u00e0 chaque tour, j&#8217;ai donc un peu plus insist\u00e9 sur ce dernier aspect du jeu, avec plus de scoring imm\u00e9diat et une proportion de dragons un peu plus forte que dans le jeu initial. The designers and publishers of <\/em>Cosmic Encounter<em> were even encouraging players to fiddle with their game, and even sold deck of blank cards. This was also made easier by the fact that we knew only a limited number of games, and therefore played them regularly and knew them intimately. I don\u2019t know if our group was the only one. I don\u2019t know if our gaming group was one of the few working that way, or if everyone was taking game rules so lightly, having no problem with changing the rules or adding to them, even in the middle of a game. In the mid-nineties, I designed with Pierre Rosenthal an alchemy-themed <\/em>Magic the Gathering<em> expansion which was deemed good enough by Wizards of the Coast to pay us so that they could recycle its ideas in future ofiicial expansions. Many of the new characters and districts cards in the <\/em>Citadels<em> big box come from the ideas of a game fan, Robin Corr\u00e8ze, who could look at the game systems from a slightly different angle. Many of the new characters in the new edition of Mascarade were also suggested by friends and fans. When the game can easily support it, I encourage my publishers, if there are a few remaining spots on the printing card-sheets, to add a few blank cards. Unfortunately, I\u2019ve rarely been successful.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>One of the reasons why I now rarely tinker with other designers\u2019 games is that the way I play games, and probably the way most gamers play games, has changed and become more scattered. We play as much, if not more, as before, but we don\u2019t play the same game to death, we play many different games. We have more fun in discovery than in looking for hidden depth, which I sometimes find frustrating. Another reason might be that we tend to take games too seriously \u2013 it\u2019s true of their settings, I\u2019ve written many times about it, but it\u2019s also true of their mechanisms, with which we don\u2019t dare tinkering.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A game needs to be rich, intricate, open to expansions and development but at the same time simple enough&nbsp; so that a few games allow you to grasp the logic behind it, the levers you can manipulate and the balance you should take care of. This drafting game in which players build step by step, card by card, comboes in order to score as many points as possible has nothing really new, neither in its theme or its mechanisms, but it generates a strong feeling of depth, variety and intricacy with few mecanisms, straightforward rules and an impressive fluidity.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>There has been so much innovation in game mechanisms these thirty last years that the real novelty now is not in making it different but in making it smoother, lighter. I am everyday more convinced that, in a world which is prey to fantasies of identity and collective withdrawal, the only positive and meaningful cultural approach is this kind of casual universalism, which tangles everything and refuses to take anything seriously&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Four artists took charge of the illustrations. Jiahui Gao drew the water creaturesn Gautier Maia the earth ones, Stefano Martinuz the Fire ones and Erica Tormen the air ones. All four drew a few dragons each, because it\u2019s so cool to draw dragons. Both games have straightforward systems and simple rules generating nearly unlimited interactions. This makes them the perfect tinkering toolboxes for who wants to design their own powers and cards. With <\/em>Cosmic Encounter<em>, one could fantasize various crazy deep space aliens, with <\/em>The Vale of Eternity<em>, one can use the inexhaustible bestiary of folklores and mythologies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Most card effects in <\/em>The Vale of Eternity<em> don\u2019t have obvious relations to the creature\u2019s name, but this makes adding new ones even easier. It was possible to buy blank cards for <\/em>Cosmic Encounter<em>, we don\u2019t even need that for <\/em>The Vale of Eternity<em> now that we can easily find opaque card sleeves. The first one, <\/em>Artifacts<em>, has already been announced. Some will only bring new cards, other ones will add one or two simple game elements. There seem to be infinite possibilities\u2026 designers must just be careful not to make things too complex.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f3edc1\">After a few more playtests, here are the 24 new cards of my small fan expansion for Vale of Eternity. I tried to use a few unusual effects without adding any new rule or mechanisms.<br>I have a feeling that the game slightly favors &#8220;slow victory point engine building&#8221; strategies over successions of one shot big moves. I therefore tried to tweak the game a little bit in this last direction, with more &#8220;one night stand&#8221; scoring and more opportunities to disrupt opponent&#8217;s engines.
