I played a few games of Ethnos, when it was published in 2017 by CMON, and thoroughly enjoyed them, even when the game felt a bit unfinished. The art was good but the graphics bland. The map was divided in six regions which didn’t mean much in game terms. It felt like a fabulous game which had been developed and published a bit too fast.

I rejoiced when I heard that the Space Cowboys team, which was already responsible for publishing another of Paolo’s great designs, Libertalia, was working on a retheme of Ethnos. Archeos Society is just out, and it looks gorgeous. I played it twice and it fell flat twice. Since I didn’t remember Ethnos very well, I just opened my old box and browsed through the rules to check the changes. I instantly saw the problem. The game has been thoroughly expurgated from everything a bit aggressive, from every possibility to attack other players, because war and violence 1)are bad and 2) don’t sell. Such bowdlerization has recently become commonplace with game publishers.

War and violence are certainly bad in real life, but they are not a problem in novels and movies. They should not be either in games, especially since they make for an efficient way to generate interaction between the players. The fight was not very bloody in Ethnos, which was technically more an area majority game than a war game, and I think it could have been improved with the possibility, for some people, to cross borders and attack neighbors. Anyway, the opposite has been done in Archeos Society, where the rivalry for the control of the six regions has been replaced with simply moving players pieces on various scoring tracks. These are not even race tracks, since there’s no bonus for the first one past the post, and no possibility to trip opponents up. The fun and interactive part of the game has been replaced by complex scoring systems, different on every track, so that each player makes their own calculations, mostly ignoring opponents.

As a result, even when nine tenths of the rules are the same, Ethnos and Archeos Society feel completely different. Ethnos was a true game, played with and against opponents. Archeos Society feels like a math optimization problem. Ethnos was simple, fun, nasty, a game for every casual gamer. Archeos Society feels serious, cold, technically challenging but still probably too simple for hardcore gamers.

Most publishers nowadays seem to believe that a game can only be a major hit if it is cute – meaning either pink cute or green cute – if one can play for oneself without playing against the other. I even recently got an email from a publisher who wanted to republish Isla Dorada, a deliberately nasty game, with removing the blocking possibilities which make most of its charm. Ironically, those who adhere to this narrative always give the same two examples, Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan. Both are outstanding games, and not about war, but blocking, and sometimes aggressive blocking, is one of their essential features.

I like aggressive, even mean, games – or, to use the euphemized term, interactive games. It’s a personal taste, but I think it is a very common one, and probably more among casual gamers than among hardcore ones and publishers. And I intend to keep on designing “interactive” games.

A few days only after I posted this blogpost, I read a tweet by my friend Eric Lang, in which he highlighted another manifestation of most publishers’ aversion fore negative effects in games.

He noticed that some of the unnecessary complexity of modern board games came from trying to minimize “feel bad moments” in games. I didn’t use this wording, but it is for this exact reason that the regions in Ethnos have been replaced by scoring tracks in Archeos Society.
The other reaction pointed by Eric is publishers asking the designer to add “compensations” for the player who loses a fight or a majority, be it because of bad luck or of an opponent’s clever move, so that the loss doesn’t feel too bad.

It is usually an error for two reasons. First because, and that was Eric’s main point, these compensations are added rules and make the game more complex. Another reason is that these “feel bad” moments are part of a game’s fun, if only because they help emphasizing the good moments. A game with no real bad moments is also a game with no real good moments – it feels flat.

Eric gives one example of game with simple rules bad moments, Richard Garfield’s King of Tokyo. My three best-selling games, Diamant, Mascarade and Citadels, are also merciless and even sometimes unfair. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for players, I even think it’s one of the reasons for their success.

In the recent editions of Citadels, there are two #1 cards designed to replace the Assassin, the Witch and the Magistrate. These two characters come from a demand by the publisher, who wanted to make the #1 character’s effect less violent for the affected player. I never play with these more complex characters, and I don’t think many players do. The assassin is so much simpler and more fun.

I’m not totally against compensations. If it fits with the story, if it doesn’t slow or complexify the game, if it adds to the tension, why not. In a prototype I’m working on at the moment, the monkey who wakes up the tiger can keep a whisker and use it later to discard a card and redraw. It’s OK because there’s a fun story in it, and it’s simple. In too many games, compensations are such that it doesn’t really matter any more if your die roll is a hit or miss, if the card you draw is good or bad – and the game becomes tenseless.

The publishers who want to minimize these “bad moments” misunderstand the essence of the gaming pleasure. Of course, players try to win, that’s the whole point of the game. The fun, however, is not in the result, in winning, it is in the tension, in trying to win. The games we best remember are those we won but nearly lost, and those we lost but could have won. Why do so many people play poker, a game which is mostly “feel bad moments”.

Many publishers – not all, luckily – seem to forget that the people who buy and play games are people who like playing. This means they try to win, but they dont mind losing. People who hate losing don’t play games.

A few months later, I remembered that Bruno Cathala had once explained to me his theory that gaming pleasure is largely based on frustration, on the players always missing one card, one action point, one spot on the die, on space on the track to do what they want. This frustration is not very different from that described above, of the player patiently preparing a move to see it blocked by a road or a worker placed the player on their right, just before their turn comes. It is not different in cooperative games, where blocking is done by the system.

This article has generated, since I published it six months ago, many half-drunk discussions with fellow game designers. While we don’t all claim to aim at the exact same negative emotion, I don’t think a single designer ever told me they design, or would like to design, entirely « positive » games. This idea is both a publisher’s fantasy, and a bad sales pitch due to a misunderstanding of gamers and the nature of gaming fun.
