The four games were Mystery of the Abbey (with Serge Laget), Fist of Dragonstones (with Michael Schacht), Queen’s necklace (with Bruno Cathala) and Terra. It was a gamble, and I never regretted it, even when these games are now out of print, or no more at Days of Wonder. Twenty years later, I just made the same kind of gamble and signed for four games with a new US publisher, Trick or Treat Studios games. The first one, Trollfest, designed with Camille Mathieu, is already out, and I can’t tell much about the other ones, two reprints of older light card games and a more ambitious and original big box game.

Trick or Treat Studios is new to the boardgame market, but it’s not a new company. It was founded thirteen years ago, in California, by Chris Zephro. Trick or Treat Studios, as you can guess from its name, specializes in Halloween stuff, masks, costumes, collectables which in the US is much more of a big business than anywhere else in the world. Boardgame professionals might have met the Trick or Treat team in Nuremberg when venturing into the masks and costumes hall.

I was a bit surprised to see a well established company, in what looks like a profitable market, venturing into the crowed boardgame business. So I interviewed Chris Zephro, via Skype, on his projects and motives. And since I hate long audio or video interviews and podcasts which I cannot read diagonally looking for what is of interest for me, I don’t post it but used it to write this short blogpost.

Chris was with Gary Gygax’s son in Jr High School, and has been playing role playing games, and later boardgames, for very long. He owns a collection of about 2000 boardgames. The fantasy and horror themes of Trick or Treat products fit very well with modern boardgames, which can easily be sold via the same networks of shops and websites. Chris and his team, David, Justin, Jody and a few others, were considering venturing into boardgames for some time. Like many people, they “took advantage” of the covid crisis to contact people and start developing new ideas. They contacted several well know designers, such as Eric Lang, Richard Garfield, Tom Lehmann, Emerson Matssuchi and even Bruno Faidutti (if not, I would not be writing this blogpost now) but also developed some fun ideas by their friends and coworkers. They also managed to acquire the rights on a few games by a really nice company who recently had to go out of business – I probably should not name it yet. Betting on well know game designers, great horror artists little known so far in the gaming world, and a new commercial network which doesn’t prevent them to also use the more traditional ones, Chris thinks there is a place for Trick or Treat games in the fast growing but also overcrowded boardgame publishing world.

The three first Trick or Treat games, three large square boxes which look both horrifying and refreshing, are landing in the US shops these days. If interested, email me (faidutti@gmail.com) and I’ll put you in contact with him.

The main reason which made write this blogpost is the real fun I have working on Trollfest with Chris, David, Jody and all the others. I know publishers who, once a publishing contract is signed, work on the game in house, sometimes changing tons of elements, and only vaguely emailing the designer once every two or three months that “development is going smoothly”. I have no real issue with this for new versions of older games; I’m not always excited in coming back to an older design, and I can be curious of what other people can make out of it. I can’t work this way for new designs, because I want the published game to be mine, even when I can always bounce back and build on the publisher or the illustrator’s remarks. It’s frustrating and the results are often mediocre.
This is why I want to stress as an example the method used on the development of Trollfest. There was an online forum on a project management system, namely Basecamp but it can probably work as well with other ones. All the people involved, publisher, designers, artist, graphic designer had access to it, could see everything and throw wild ideas in the air. It was efficient, dynamic, respectful of everyone’s work, and probably meant less work for the publisher than sending and forwarding emails in all directions. That’s how all publishers should work on game development, and that’s one of the main reasons I’m willing to work again with them – the other reason being that they seem to be nice guys.

Some of the Trick or treat team playing Trollfest with family.

Continue reading →

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

500

post-14076","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trollfest
["GET
