Dominion<\/span><\/strong>, de Donald Vaccarino, il y a une quinzaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, fut sinon le premier jeu \u00e0 avoir recours au “deckbuilding”, du moins le premier jeu de cartes enti\u00e8rement construit autour de ce syst\u00e8me. Chaque joueur d\u00e9bute la partie avec le m\u00eame petit paquet de cartes, mais peut l\u2019enrichir en achetant de nouvelles cartes plus puissantes, parfois aussi l\u2019\u00e9purer en se d\u00e9barrassant des plus modestes, construisant peu \u00e0 peu un \u00ab moteur \u00bb pour sa strat\u00e9gie propre, et l\u2019adaptant au d\u00e9roulement de la partie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\u2019ai tout de suite compris l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat du truc, mais malgr\u00e9 plusieurs tentatives, je n\u2019ai jamais accroch\u00e9 \u00e0 Dominion, trop abstrait et, d\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res extensions, trop calculatoire. J\u2019ai plus jou\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques uns de ses premiers successeurs, Thunderstone<\/span><\/strong> et surtout Trains<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, plus th\u00e9matiques, mais je n\u2019ai jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 un sp\u00e9cialiste d\u2019un genre auquel je ne m\u2019int\u00e9ressais que d\u2019assez loin. J\u2019ai donc \u00e9t\u00e9 surpris en r\u00e9alisant que, depuis deux ou trois ans, certains des jeux auxquels je joue sinon le plus souvent, du moins le plus s\u00e9rieusement, sont des jeux de deckbuilding, ou de bagbuilding qui est un peu la m\u00eame chose (on y m\u00e9lange des jetons dans un sac au lieu de m\u00e9langer un paquet de cartes). Je ne r\u00e9p\u00e8terai donc pas dans toute la suite de cet article \u00ab\u00a0ou bagbuilding\u00a0\u00bb chaque fois que je parle de deckbuilding, consid\u00e9rez que c\u2019est sous entendu et que je parle de trucbuilding. Il y a d\u2019abord eu El Dorado<\/strong><\/span>, Clank!<\/span><\/strong>, Great Western Trails<\/span><\/strong>, Dwar7s Winter<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> et Quacks of Quedlinburg<\/span><\/strong>, il y a depuis peu <\/strong>Dwar7s Spring<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span>, Taverns of Tiefenthal<\/strong><\/span>, Lost Ruins of Arnak<\/span><\/strong>, War Chest<\/strong><\/span><\/strong> <\/strong>(Champ d’Honneur en fran\u00e7ais) ou Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. <\/em><\/strong>Ce dernier est mon favori ces derniers temps, mais un nouveau venu, Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, pourrait bien le d\u00e9tr\u00f4ner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aucun de ces jeux n\u2019est cependant, comme l\u2019\u00e9taient Dominion<\/span><\/strong> et ses premiers successeurs, un pur jeu de cartes et donc un pur jeu de deckbuilding. Ils ont tous un plateau de jeu sur lequel se passe autre chose, souvent une course ou une baston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est assez habituel de distinguer les sports dans lesquels joueurs ou \u00e9quipes s\u2019affrontent, face \u00e0 face, comme la boxe ou le football, et ceux o\u00f9 ils sont en comp\u00e9tition, c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te ou l\u2019un apr\u00e8s l\u2019autre, sans que leur performance affecte celle de leurs rivaux, comme les courses, sauts et lancers. C\u2019est un peu la m\u00eame chose pour les jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, les wargames \u00e9tant l\u2019arch\u00e9type du jeu d\u2019affrontement et les \u00ab\u00a0roll and write\u00a0\u00bb celui du jeu de comp\u00e9tition tranquille, mais les cas interm\u00e9diaires ou ambigus y sont beaucoup plus nombreux.
La magie des nouveaux jeux de deckbuilding est qu\u2019ils sont \u00e0 la fois des jeux d\u2019affrontement et de comp\u00e9tition, que l\u2019on y joue \u00e0 la fois face \u00e0 face et c\u00f4te \u00e0 c\u00f4te. Ils sont comme une cr\u00e8me brul\u00e9e, \u00e0 la fois chauds et froids. On y trouve \u00e0 la fois le plaisir tranquille et solitaire de construire son deck et de le faire \u00e9voluer tout au long de la partie, et l\u2019excitation d\u2019affronter les autres joueurs sur le plateau de jeu. Si cette interaction reste limit\u00e9e dans Quacks of Quedlinburg<\/strong>, Taverns of Tiefenthal<\/strong>, Great Western Trails<\/strong><\/span>, <\/strong>elle est plus importante, sous la forme de course dans Lost Ruins of Arnak<\/span> <\/strong>et plus encore dans Clank!<\/span><\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong>ou El Dorado<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>,<\/strong><\/strong> qui est un vrai jeu de blocage. Elle devient essentielle dans les jeux de guerre que sont War Chest<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span>, une sorte de jeu d’\u00e9checs en deckbuilding et le seul jeu \u00e0 deux de cet article, Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span>, sans doute le plus vendu, et Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, ma derni\u00e8re d\u00e9couverte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certes, il y peut y avoir un peu d\u2019interaction dans la constitution des decks, mais cela reste assez limit\u00e9. Souvent, une carte prise par un joueur n\u2019est plus disponible pour les suivants, mais c\u2019est rarement pour cette raison qu\u2019on l\u2019ach\u00e8te; c’est un peu comme dans les Roll and Write o\u00f9 un d\u00e9 pris par un jouer n’est plus disponible pour les suivants – s’il n’y a pas de v\u00e9ritable volont\u00e9 de nuire aux adversaires, l’interaction tombe \u00e0 plat.
Cela peut parfois \u00eatre un peu plus s\u00e9rieux. Je ne sais plus dans quel jeu un effet mesquin permet de voler une carte sur la d\u00e9fausse d\u2019un adversaire ; dans Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> <\/strong>un pouvoir permet de rajouter de mauvais jetons dans un sac adverse. Tout cela reste n\u00e9anmoins marginal, et c\u2019est bien la dichotomie entre les deux parties du jeu qui cr\u00e9e, malgr\u00e9 leur complexit\u00e9, le rythme et le charme particulier de cette nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de jeux de deckbuiliding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quant \u00e0 en faire un\u2026. Je m’y suis essay\u00e9 avec Charlie Cleveland pour Vendetta<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, notre jeu de cartes dans l’univers de Vampire – La Mascarade. Je suis tr\u00e8s fier du r\u00e9sultat, violent et th\u00e9matique, mais cela a demand\u00e9 un travail de r\u00e9glage et d’\u00e9quilibrage immense, que je ne me sens pas vraiment l’envie de vouloir faire une deuxi\u00e8me fois. Et je deviens de plus en plus paresseux. Surtout, des jeux comme El Dorado<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, Arnak<\/span><\/strong>, Quacks of Quedlinburg<\/strong><\/span>, Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> <\/span><\/strong>ou Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> me semblent d\u2019une telle qualit\u00e9 que je ne vois pas bien ce que je pourrais faire de mieux – il faudrait faire diff\u00e9rent, donc associer le deckbuilding \u00e0 quelque chose de nouveau – des ench\u00e8res, peut-\u00eatre ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Si vous avez suivi, vous avez compris le code couleur de cet article. En bleu,<\/strong><\/span> les jeux froids, qui se jouent pour l’essentiel chacun dans son coin, avec son petit deck. L’interaction y reste limit\u00e9e. En orang\u00e9<\/span>,<\/strong> ceux avec un peu plus de blocage et de rivalit\u00e9, mais sans interaction directe. En rouge,<\/strong><\/span> ceux que je veux mettre en avant dans cet article, les cr\u00e8mes brul\u00e9es, les jeux chauds et froids, ou le deckbuilding sert de support \u00e0 un v\u00e9ritable affrontement entre les joueurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen years ago or so, Donald Vaccarino didn’t really invent deckbuilding, but he designed the first game entirely built around it, Dominion<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. Each player starts the game with the same small deck of cards and can develop it with buying new and more powerful cards, and sometimes also refine it with getting rid of the weakest ones. Thus, every player independently builds an \u00ab engine \u00bb for their strategy, and adapts it to the ongoing game.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I immediately saw the point but, despite a few tries, I never found Dominion<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> really exciting. The game was too asbstract and too brain burning for me. I had more fun with some of its more thematic successors, like Thunderstone<\/span><\/strong><\/strong> or Trains<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, but I never become an enthusiast of the genre. I never tried to design a deckbuilding game.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why I have been surprised when noticing that several of the games I was seriously and regularly playing these last two or three years were deckbuilding game – or bagbuilding games, in which players add tokens to a bag instead of adding cards to a deck, but it\u2019s more or less the same thing (from now on, I won\u2019t repeat \u00ab\u00a0or bagbuilding\u00a0\u00bb every time I write deckbuilding). It started with El Dorado<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, then came Clank<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, Great Western Trails<\/strong><\/span>, Dwar7s Winter<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> <\/strong> and Quacks of Quedlinburg<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>.<\/strong> Recent additions to the list are Taverns of Tiefenthal<\/strong><\/span>, Dwar7s Spring<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong>, Lost Ruins of Arnak<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>, War Chest<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/em> and Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong>. The latter was my favorite but I suspect it might soon be replaced with the brand new Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dominion<\/span><\/strong> and most of its derivatives were pure card games, and therefore pure deckbuilding games. None of these games is. They all have a board where something else happens involving all the players, be it a race or a fight, and that\u2019s what makes them interesting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two kinds of sports. Those, like boxing or football, where teams or players fight against one another, and those, like races and throwing, where they compete side by side without any interaction. It is the same with boardgames, with wargames on the one end and roll & write games on the other, but there are also many intermediate or ambiguous cases.
What makes many of these new deckbuilding stand out is that they are not \u00ab\u00a0in between\u00a0\u00bb, they are both fully \u00ab\u00a0face to face\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0side by side\u00a0\u00bb. They feel like a creme brulee, hot and cold at the same time. Players go both the quiet pleasure of building their deck and evolving it during the game, and the rough fun of fighting opponents on the board. This interaction was still relatively limited in Quacks of Quedlinburg<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>, Taverns of Tiefenthal<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> Great Western Trails<\/span><\/strong> but it\u2019s more important through race in Clank<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong> or Lost Ruins of Arnak<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/em>,<\/strong> and even more in El Dorado<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em> which is very much abourt blocking. It becomes the heart of the game in War Chest<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span>, a chess-like deckbuilding game and the only two player game in this blogpost, in Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span>, probably the best seller, and Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, my last discovery.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There can be some interaction in building decks, but its always very limited. In many games, a card bought by a player is not available for the next ones, but it\u2019s rarely the reason why one buys it; it feels a bit like in these roll and write games where a die used by a player is not available fpor the next ones, if there’s no will to hurt one’s opponent, it doesn’t feel as interaction. <\/em>
It can sometimes be more serious. I don\u2019t remember in which game an effect allows to steal a card from an opponent\u2019s discard pile; in Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>, it is sometimes possible to add a bad curse token in an opponent bag. All this is, however, purposefully marginal, and the charm of these new dackbuilding games comes from the dichotomy between their two parts, the solitary deckbuilding and the multiplayer board play.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for designing one\u2026I gave it a try, together with Charlie Cleveland, in Vendetta<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>, our card game in the Vampire – The Masquerade universe. I think we made a strong, terribly interactive and very thematic game, but it was so much work !!!!! I’m not sure I’m ready to try it again, and I\u2019m becoming lazier every day. More importantly, games like El Dorado<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/em>, Lost Ruins of Arnak<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/em> Dune Imperium<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong> <\/em><\/strong>or<\/em> Wonderland’s War<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em> <\/strong>my favorites ones.<\/em> are so well crafted that I don\u2019t think I can do better in this style. Or may be I should mix the deckbuilding part with somethig new – auctions, may be.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you followed well, you should have understood the color code for the games. Blue<\/strong><\/span> is for the old style deckbuildings, mostly played ise by side, with little interaction. Orange<\/span><\/strong>, is for games with some more rivalry, through race or blocking, but no direct interaction between players. Red<\/strong><\/span> is for those I really wanted to highlight in this blogpost, the cold and hot ones, in which deckbuilding is the prequel to a true fight between the players. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
