Elle m\u2019accompagne aussi souvent \u00e0 des concerts, surtout mais pas seulement metal, ou du moins m\u2019accompagnait du temps o\u00f9 il y avait un peu plus de concerts. Camille \u00e9tant aussi correctrice litt\u00e9raire, sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e dans l\u2019imaginaire, il y avait une certaine logique \u00e0 ce que nous finissions par travailler ensemble sur un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 mettant en sc\u00e8ne des groupes de rock compos\u00e9s de nains, d\u2019orques et d\u2019elfes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent&#038;listType=playlist&#038;list=PL2IQ53n6vU7RC3gEZDvkGryWyrxLkN0dD\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e8s le d\u00e9but, je pensais appeler le jeu <em>TrollFest<\/em>, Camille pensant plut\u00f4t \u00e0 <em>Elfest<\/em>. Notre premier essai, un jeu de cartes, fonctionnait plut\u00f4t bien mais le th\u00e8me rock and roll ne collait pas parfaitement avec les m\u00e9canismes. Tr\u00e8s vite, les guitaristes, bassistes ou batteurs figurant sur les cartes sont devenus des sportifs participant \u00e0 des comp\u00e9titions de lancer de nain, de tricot ou de bataille de boules de neige, et <em>TrollFest<\/em> est devenu <em>Trollympics<\/em>. Ce jeu a en principe trouv\u00e9 un \u00e9diteur il y a un petit moment d\u00e9j\u00e0, mais tout est compliqu\u00e9 en ce moment, et comme on a d\u00e9j\u00e0 rat\u00e9 les jeux olympiques de 2021, je crains qu\u2019il ne sorte que pour les prochains. Les joueurs choisissent d\u2019abord des cartes action et musicien et constituent chacun un groupe amateur d\u2019au moins quatre membres, un chanteur, un guitariste, un bassiste et batteur. Chacun quitte ensuite sa r\u00e9gion d\u2019origine pour une vaste tourn\u00e9e, allant de ville en ville, donnant des concerts, recrutant \u00e0 l\u2019occasion de meilleurs musiciens, embauchant m\u00eame parfois des dragons pour le transport et les lumi\u00e8res. Les concerts les plus r\u00e9ussis, ceux qui rapportent le plus de points, sont dans les cit\u00e9s qui ont soif de culture, celles o\u00f9 l\u2019on n\u2019a pas vu passer grand monde depuis longtemps, et surtout dans celles dont le public est particuli\u00e8rement r\u00e9ceptif \u00e0 votre style musical \u2013 en gros, les nains aiment la musique de nains et les trolls la musique de trolls.&nbsp;S\u2019il est peu utile d\u2019essayer de jouer de la pop elfe chez les trolls, des big bands de fusion multiculturelle peuvent tirer leur \u00e9pingle du jeu un peu partout, surtout s\u2019ils recrutent quelques figures marginales, gnome ou kobold, ou exotiques, sir\u00e8ne ou minotaure. Des \u00e9v\u00e9nements impr\u00e9vus, d\u00e9saccords entre musiciens, temp\u00eate de neige ou gilets jaunes, viennent parfois semer le trouble. Au fait, il y a un groupe de folk\u2013metal norv\u00e9gien tr\u00e8s sympa qui s\u2019appelle <em>TrollFest<\/em>, et qui chante en trollspr\u00e5k, langue qui est \u2013 on aurait d\u00fb s\u2019en douter &#8211; un m\u00e9lange de norv\u00e9gien et d\u2019allemand. Les r\u00e8gles en sont pourtant tr\u00e8s simples, puisque celles de nos prototypes tenaient sur une simple feuille de papier A4. Le jeu \u00e9tant rest\u00e9 en d\u00e9veloppement assez longtemps, et mes amis demandant souvent \u00e0 jouer sur le prototype, Camille et moi avons sans cesse \u00e9t\u00e9 tent\u00e9s d&#8217;y ajouter de petits \u00e9l\u00e9ments th\u00e9matiques qui nous semblaient rigolos. Pendant quelques temps, nous avons m\u00eame essay\u00e9 de personnaliser encore plus les musiciens, quelques uns d&#8217;entre-eux \u00e9tant de vraies stars avec des nombreux fans, mais ayant, comme toutes les stars, des caprices &#8211; un chanteur elfe raciste refuse de jouer avec des nains, un orque ne se produit pas dans les villes elfes, un nain a peur des dragons et ne se d\u00e9place pas par voie a\u00e9rienne, un autre a le mal de mer et ne monte pas sur les navires. Tr\u00e8s amusants sur le papier, ces effets qui \u00e9taient surtout des restrictions, ralentissaient le jeu et \u00e9taient souvent oubli\u00e9s, nous avons donc d\u00fb les abandonner. Aujourd&#8217;hui, surtout avec l&#8217;effet kickstarter, beaucoup d&#8217;auteurs de jeux sont tent\u00e9s de toujours ajouter des \u00e9l\u00e9ments \u00e0 leur cr\u00e9ation. Il ne faut pas se l&#8217;interdire, et dans <em>TrollFest<\/em> le jour de la marmotte est par exemple un ajout de derni\u00e8re minute qui ajoute un peu de tension, mais je voudrais profiter de cet article pour donner ce conseil aux jeunes auteurs: m\u00e9fiez-vous des petites r\u00e8gles qui ont l&#8217;air marrantes mais qui, finalement, apportent surtout de la complexit\u00e9. Quand les joueurs oublient souvent une r\u00e8gle, cela signifie g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement qu&#8217;elle est inutile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex Garfield, par l\u2019\u00e9quipe de <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/trickortreatstudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trick or Treat Studios<\/a><\/em>, un important fabricant am\u00e9ricain de masques inqui\u00e9tants, de costumes de Halloween et de bidules \u00e0 collectionner d\u00e9sireux de se lancer dans le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Je leur ai donc propos\u00e9 les deux jeux de mon catalogue qui me semblaient th\u00e9matiquement les plus proches de leurs univers, et ils ont, \u00e0 ma grande surprise, d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de publier les deux. Je pensais que l\u2019autre, un petit jeu de cartes, sortirait d\u2019abord mais c\u2019est visiblement <em>TrollFest<\/em> qui les a le plus amus\u00e9s. Il est vrai que, lors d\u2019une discussion en ligne avec toute l\u2019\u00e9quipe, nous avons constat\u00e9 que leurs go\u00fbts musicaux n\u2019\u00e9taient pas tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents des Rob Zombie, musicien metal et r\u00e9alisateur de films d\u2019horreur, pour lequel il a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 les clips de&nbsp;<em>American Witch<\/em>&nbsp;et&nbsp;<em>Lords of Salem<\/em>, et les illustrations de ses albums. David a visiblement pris beaucoup de plaisir \u00e0 dessiner les nombreux musiciens de TrollFest, ce qu\u2019il a d\u2019ailleurs fait avec une vitesse impressionnante. Son style est sombre et sanglant, mais aussi l\u00e9ger et plein d\u2019humour, et assez diff\u00e9rent de ce \u00e0 quoi nous sommes habitu\u00e9s dans le monde du jeu \u2013 mais je crois qu\u2019on va le retrouver dans d\u2019autres production de <em>Trick or Treat Studios<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leur programme initial comprend, outre notre TrollFest,&nbsp;<em>Blood Orders<\/em>, un jeu de vampire relativement ambitieux de Nick Badagliacca (mais je ne vais pas lui faire trop de pub, moi aussi j\u2019ai un jeu de vampires qui vient de sortir, <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2020\/12\/10\/vampire-the-masquerade-vendetta\/\">Vendetta<\/a>) et&nbsp;<em>World-Z League<\/em>, de David Gregg, un jeu de baston avec des \u00e9lastiques et des zombies qui me fait tr\u00e8s envie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QRg_8NNPTD8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>Je les ai vus sur sc\u00e8ne, et c&#8217;\u00e9tait un peu d\u00e9cevant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ceux qui me connaissent seront peut-\u00eatre un peu surpris de voir, dans <em>TrollFest<\/em>, un artifice th\u00e9matique que j\u2019avais jusqu\u2019ici plut\u00f4t \u00e9vit\u00e9, celui de la rivalit\u00e9 entre peuples fantastiques &#8211; les am\u00e9ricains parlent de races -, elfes, nains, orques, trolls et vampires. J\u2019ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 un peu g\u00ean\u00e9 par le lien \u00e9vident entre ces univers de fantaisie ludique et litt\u00e9raire et la tendance, en particulier dans le monde anglophone, \u00e0 essentialiser race et culture, tout en pr\u00e9tendant bien s\u00fbr faire le contraire, et <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/?p=3780\/#fantastique\">j\u2019en ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 discut\u00e9 un peu sur ce blog<\/a>. Je me m\u00e9fie des identit\u00e9s, des traditions, des authenticit\u00e9s toujours reconstruites et souvent r\u00e9actionnaires, et pense que nous avons tort de f\u00e9tichiser des diff\u00e9rences culturelles finalement assez superficielles. comme&nbsp;<em>Gogol Bordello, The Cherry Coke$, Dakhabrakha, the Amsterdam Kletzmer Band, La caravane passe<\/em>ou le bien-nomm\u00e9&nbsp;<em>Kultur Shock<\/em>, et c\u2019est ce genre de musique, autant que du metal, que j\u2019\u00e9coutais en travaillant sur&nbsp;<em>TrollFest<\/em>. C\u2019est pour cela que, sur ma <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL2IQ53n6vU7RC3gEZDvkGryWyrxLkN0dD\">playlist Trollfest<\/a>, j\u2019ai mis des musiques d\u2019un peu partout et pas juste du metal germano-nordique, dont le style correspond pourtant le mieux \u00e0 nos univers fantastiques, ne serait-ce que parce qu\u2019il puise aux m\u00eames sources.<br>La musique est aujourd\u2019hui, avec la cuisine, l\u2019un des rares domaines culturels o\u00f9 le m\u00e9lange des genres joyeux et d\u00e9complex\u00e9 semble encore l\u2019emporter sur les tristes replis identitaires. J\u2019esp\u00e8re bien que cela va durer et m\u00eame rebondir sur d\u2019autres domaines quand on aura r\u00e9alis\u00e9 que la v\u00e9ritable diversit\u00e9 se vit tous ensemble et non chacun dans son coin, que c\u2019est non seulement plus rigolo mais aussi, au fond, plus honn\u00eate et plus respectueux. C&#8217;est peut-\u00eatre aussi pour cela que je ne suis pas fan des jeux de Roll &amp; Write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quoi qu&#8217;il en soit, les univers fantastiques sont sans doute plus une illustration qu&#8217;une cause de la lecture essentialiste des cat\u00e9gories sociales, \u00e0 l\u2019am\u00e9ricaine, qui gagne aujourd\u2019hui l\u2019Europe. Il n&#8217;y a donc pas de risque \u00e0 en faire usage, surtout lorsque c\u2019est, comme dans&nbsp;<em>TrollFest<\/em>&nbsp;ou dans les romans de Terry Pratchett qui en sont une des inspirations, pour s\u2019en moquer gentiment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Et puis, merde, ce n\u2019est qu\u2019un jeu. We often attend  concerts together, mostly but not obly metal, or at least we did when there were still concerts. Camille also works as a proofreader, specialized in fantasy literature. Our first prototype was a pure card game. It worked really well, but the rock\u2019n\u2019roll theme didn\u2019t really fit with the game system. Soon, the singers, drums or guitar players became athletes competing in dwarf tossing, knitting or snowball battle, and the first <\/em>TrollFest<em> became <\/em>Trollympics<em>. The game has found a publisher, but everything is a bit complex nowadays, we already missed the 2021 olympics, and I\u2019m afraid it will only be published for the next ones. At the beginning of the game, players draft action and musician cards and build an amateur band of at least four musicians, a singer, a drummer, a guitar and a bass guitar player. Every group then leaves its starting city for a big tour around the country, moving from town to town, holding concerts, sometimes recruiting additional or better musicians, sometimes even hiring dragons for the final light show. The main way to score points during the tour is to give concerts. The most successful ones are in the cities where the local crowd is most receptive to your musical style \u2013 basically, dwarves like dwarven music played by dwarven musicians, trolls like troll music played by trolls, etc. While playing elf pop in orc city halls makes little sense, multicultural big bands can have some success everywhere, especially if they also recruit a few exotic characters, like a siren or minotaur. Unexpected events such as disagreement between musicians, snow storm or yellow vests blocking the roads sometimes interfere with the band\u2019s well planned tours. All the bands play on the main stage, and the best performances score extra points for charisma, technical skill, energy and, paradoxically, both authenticity and diversity. By the way, there\u2019s a fun Norwegian folk-metal band names <\/em>TrollFest<em>. They sing in trollspr\u00e5k which is, not surprisingly, a mix of German and Norwegian. It isn&#8217;t, it&#8217;s almost as straightforward as <\/em>Ticket to Ride<em>, and the rules of my prototype were written on a single sheet a paper. However, since the game was in development for quite a long time, and some of my friends really liked it and often asked to play it, Camille and I were often tempted to add a thematic elements which sounded like they could add some fun to it. For a while, some musician cards had special abilities or, mostly, restrictions. A few of them were big names with, like every star, bizarre whims. A racist elf singer didn&#8217;t want dwarves in the band. An orc didn&#8217;t want to play in elf cities. A dwarf was afraid of dragons and coul not travel by air, another one suffered from seatsickness. This sounded fun when writing it, but it slowed the game and, too often, the players forgot these effects so we had to abandon them. These last years, in part due to publishers asking for Kickstarter stretch-goals, many designers have been tempted to add layers and layers of rules and elements to their game, and many games feel interesting but overdevelopped. The late addition of stuff is not always a bad idea, and in Trollfest, for example, the Groundhog Day has been added in the very last weeks of testing and really adds some fun tension to the game. I would like, however, to give a small piece of advice to young designers &#8211; be careful when adding small rules which sound fun and thematic but often add unnecessary complexity. If players tend to forget a rule, it usually means it&#8217;s not necessary. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 people at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/trickortreatstudios.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trick or Treat Studios<\/a><em>, a major US producer and seller of Halloween masks, scary costumes and collectibles, who wanted to move into boardgaming. I showed them the two games in my catalog which seemed to fit best with their universe and, to my surprise, they decided to do both. I thought the other one, a small card game, would be published first but they were very excited by <\/em>TrollFest<em>, and its development went very fast. We had a long zoom session with the whole team and found that we had similar musical tastes, and that they were designing the costumes of a few metal bands, including the scary masks for with Rob Zombie, a metal musician and horror movie producer. He made the video clips for the movies&nbsp;<\/em>Lords of Salem<em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/em>American Witch<em>,&nbsp;and the art for his albums. His style is of course dark and gore, but also light and full of humor, and he visibly had great fun drawing the musicians for&nbsp;<\/em>TrollFest<em>, which he did incredibly fast. It\u2019s different from what we are used to in the boardgaming world, but I think we will see it also in other games by <\/em>Trick or Treat Studios<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Among the <\/em>Trick or Treat<em> launch line are also&nbsp;<\/em>Blood Orders<em>, an ambitious vampire card game by Nick Badagliacca (but I won\u2019t promote it too much since I also have a new Vampire game, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2020\/12\/10\/vampire-the-masquerade-vendetta\/\">Vendetta<\/a><em>) and <\/em>World-Z league<em>, by David Gregg, a battle game with zombies and rubber bands which looks really fun and which I\u2019m eager to play.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YULQa94pLfU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption>Trollfest, le groupe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Those who know me might be surprised to find in&nbsp;<\/em>TrollFest<em>&nbsp;a thematic trick I\u2019ve always been extremely wary of, the rivalry between irreductibly different fantasy races &#8211; here elves, dwarves, orcs, trolls and vampires. The obvious relation between these literary or gamey fantasy worlds and the habit, mostly in the United States, to essentialize race and culture (while pretending to do the opposite) has always made me feel uncomfortable, and <a href=\"https:\/\/faidutti.com\/blog\/blog\/2017\/06\/02\/postcolonial-catan\/#fantasy\">I\u2019ve already discussed it a bit on this website<\/a>. I\u2019m wary of identities, of reactionary traditions, of reconstructed authenticities, and I think we are wrong in emphasizing and fetishizing cultural differences which are, in the end, extremely superficial. Music soothes the mood and they coexist very peacefully, at least as long as they don\u2019t drink too much mead. One can win in&nbsp;<\/em>TrollFest<em>&nbsp;with a traditional dwarven music group, very authentic and backward-looking, or even with a vaguely fascistic elven or orc metal band, but also, like in today\u2019s musical scene, with a merry and messy multicultural big band<\/em>. <em>Cultural mess is not cultural appropriation, because it&#8217;s going in every direction and not taking anything The Cherry Coke$, Dakhabrakha, the Amsterdam Kletzmer Band, La caravane passe<em>&nbsp;or the well named&nbsp;<\/em>Kultur Shock<em>.&nbsp;When working on&nbsp;<\/em>TrollFest<em>, I was more listening to that kind of music than to metal. It\u2019s also why my <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL2IQ53n6vU7RC3gEZDvkGryWyrxLkN0dD\" target=\"_blank\">Trollfest Youtube Playlist<\/a> has lots of strange fusion music from all over the world and not just german-scandinavian metal, even when the latter fits better with how we imagine a fantasy world which comes from the same sources.<br>Music is now, together with another passion of mine, cooking, one of the few cultural domains where diversity produces a joyful and uninhibited mix and not a sad retreat into segregated and fantasized identities. I hope it will stay so. It might even bounce back into politics, when everyone will realize that diversity is better all together than each in his corner (can you say this in English?), that it\u2019s not only more fun but also, in the end, more honest and respectful. Using fantasy races should therefore not be a problem, especially in humorous and obviously ironic settings, like in<\/em>TrollFest<em>&nbsp;or in Terry Pratchett novels, which have been one of the inspirations for this game.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And, fuck, it\u2019s just a game.
