En 1955, Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes publiait, chez Miro Company, Rome et Carthage. Avec son syst\u00e8me de combat faisant appel tout \u00e0 la fois \u00e0 la tactique, \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire et au bluff, ce jeu \u00e9tait en avance sur son temps \u2013 trop sans doute, puisqu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 injustement oubli\u00e9 tandis que le moins subtil Risk, imagin\u00e9 par son ami Albert Lamorisse mais auquel il avait apport\u00e9 les derniers r\u00e9glages, allait conna\u00eetre une longue carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

En 2006, au festival de jeux de Cannes, j\u2019ai eu la chance de d\u00eener avec Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes et sa femme, tout \u00e9tonn\u00e9s et amus\u00e9s de voir que le monde du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 n’avait pas oubli\u00e9 Rome et Carthage \u2013 et bient\u00f4t excit\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019une possible r\u00e9\u00e9dition. Il faut dire qu\u2019entre temps cet intellectuel un peu touche \u00e0 tout avait contribu\u00e9 avec Roger Caillois \u00e0 la naissance de la sociologie du jeu, s’\u00e9tait int\u00e9ress\u00e9 au bridge, aux probabilit\u00e9s, puis avait t\u00e2t\u00e9 de la th\u00e9orie \u00e9conomique, avant de se replier sur les valeurs sures de la philosophie classique. Alors, bien s\u00fbr, Rome et Carthage…<\/p>\n

Or voici que je viens d’apprendre, \u00e0 quelques jours d’intervalle, une triste et une bonne nouvelle. Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes est en effet d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 il y a une dizaine de jours, \u00e0 l’\u00e2ge de 98 ans, quelques semaines \u00e0 peine avant l’arriv\u00e9e de la nouvelle \u00e9dition de Rome et Carthage, qui sera pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e au prochain salon d’Essen. Gageons qu’il eut le temps de voir les \u00e9preuves, la maquette, et de s’en r\u00e9jouir.<\/p>\n

In 1955, Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes\u2019 Roma & Carthago was published in France by Miro Company. A US edition soon foloowed, as Mediterranean. With its clever combat system made of tactics, bluffing and some memory, this game was ahead of its time. It may have been far too much ahead, since it was soon forgotten. The less subtle Risk, imagined by his friend Albert Lamorisse and finalized by Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes, was, on the other hand, to become a lasting world hit.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2006, I was lucky enough to have dinner with Jean-Ren\u00e9 and his wife. They were surprised and amused to find out that Roma & Carthago had not been completely forgotten in the boardgaming world, and excited at the prospective of a new edition. Since the fifties, Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes had left boardgaming and this intellectual jack of all trades had contributed, with Roger Caillois, in the very beginnings of game sociology, then indulged in bridge theory, in probabilities, in economics theory, and finally retreated on the stable values of classical philosophy. So, Mediterranean again ! But why not ?<\/em><\/p>\n

I just learned, within less than a week, a sad and a good news. Jean-Ren\u00e9 Vernes, aged 98, died a dozen days ago, a few weeks before the new edition of Mediterranean, under its original name Roma & Carthago, will be introduced at the Essen game fair. I bet he had time enough to see a mock-up of the new version, which looks much nicer than the flashy seventies version.<\/em><\/p>\n
