Lorsque, entre deux parties, quelqu\u2019un met sur la table de jeu cette question r\u00e9currente, il y a toujours quelqu\u2019un &#8211; souvent moi &#8211; pour citer une formule de Freud selon laquelle \u00ab&nbsp;le contraire du jeu n\u2019est pas le s\u00e9rieux mais la r\u00e9alit\u00e9&nbsp;\u00bb \u00e0 l\u2019appui de la th\u00e8se selon laquelle le jeu est une activit\u00e9 s\u00e9rieuse. Ne parlant pas allemand, langue dans laquelle cette phrase a n\u00e9cessairement \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crite, j\u2019ignore quel \u00e9tait son sens originel pr\u00e9cis. Sa traduction en fran\u00e7ais pose probl\u00e8me car le s\u00e9rieux, et la s\u00e9riosit\u00e9 (ce mot doit exister puisque Word ne vient pas de me le souligner en rouge) sont des mots \u00e0 double sens. Dire que le jeu est s\u00e9rieux peut signifier qu\u2019il doit \u00eatre pratiqu\u00e9 avec s\u00e9rieux, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire avec concentration, ou que le jeu est quelque chose de s\u00e9rieux, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire d\u2019important dans le monde r\u00e9el. Les choses se compliquent encore en anglais ou, selon que Spiel\/jeu est traduit par toy ou game, la phrase de Freud prend des sens tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Je ne suis donc pas absolument certain de ce que cette phrase signifiait pour Freud. Elle signifie pour moi que le jeu doit \u00eatre pratiqu\u00e9 avec s\u00e9rieux, mais certainement pas qu\u2019il puisse et doive avoir un impact mesurable sur le monde r\u00e9el, ce que je ne pense ni souhaitable, ni m\u00eame vraiment possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cela fait de longues ann\u00e9es que je milite pour la reconnaissance des auteurs de jeux comme \u00ab&nbsp;auteurs&nbsp;\u00bb \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. C\u2019est en partie pour cela que, assez r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, je compare notre activit\u00e9 \u00e0 celle des romanciers, ou des sc\u00e9naristes de cin\u00e9ma et de jeu video. De fait, m\u00eame si chaque auteur de livre ou de jeu travaille \u00e0 sa mani\u00e8re, nous avons en commun avec au moins les romanciers de passer le plus clair de notre temps devant une feuille plus ou moins blanche, \u00e0 prendre des notes et imaginer des intrigues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La comparaison ne doit pourtant pas \u00eatre pouss\u00e9e trop loin, et je me demande aujourd\u2019hui s\u2019il n\u2019aurait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 plus judicieux de nous comparer aux musiciens ou, comme le fait volontiers Bruno Cathala, aux cuisiniers \u2013 m\u00eame si c\u2019est sans doute pour lui plus une m\u00e9taphore qu\u2019une comparaison, et m\u00eame si j\u2019ai quelques doutes sur sa connaissance de l\u2019art culinaire. \u00c0 trop vouloir traiter le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 comme la litt\u00e9rature, on en arrive en effet \u00e0 des contresens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parmi les caract\u00e9ristiques qui distinguent le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de la litt\u00e9rature, du cin\u00e9ma, du jeu de r\u00f4le et d\u2019une grande partie du jeu video, il en est une que certains voudraient oublier ou ignorer, l\u2019absence de profondeur. On ne conna\u00eet jamais parfaitement un personnage de roman, on peut en faire des analyses diff\u00e9rentes, s\u2019y int\u00e9resser, parfois m\u00eame en faire autre chose que ce qu\u2019a imagin\u00e9 l\u2019auteur. Il est, tout comme un personnage de cin\u00e9ma et, dans une certaine mesure, de jeu de r\u00f4le, plus profond, plus riche que ce qui appara\u00eet dans le texte ou dans le film. Il nous donne ainsi une ouverture sur un contexte psychologique, imaginaire ou historique. Il n\u2019y a rien de cela dans un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui, m\u00eame lorsque l\u2019on y joue un personnage, ce qui est loin d\u2019\u00eatre toujours le cas, reste un syst\u00e8me clos, dont on conna\u00eet toutes les r\u00e8gles. On ne peut imaginer des motivations, une histoire, une psychologie \u00e0 un personnage dont toutes les caract\u00e9ristiques sont connues, ni \u00e0 des joueurs qui n\u2019ont qu\u2019une seule et unique motivation, parce que c\u2019est le principe m\u00eame du jeu, gagner. Sauf dans quelques cas tr\u00e8s particuliers, un jeu ne peut donc pas avoir de sens profond et cach\u00e9 ou de message subtil. C\u2019est pour cette raison que les meilleurs th\u00e8mes de jeu, les plus efficaces, les plus int\u00e9ressants pour les joueurs, sont ceux qui sont suffisamment simples et connus, ce qui est la d\u00e9finition du clich\u00e9. L\u2019histoire, la fantasy, la science-fiction en sont des r\u00e9servoirs, dans lesquels je n\u2019h\u00e9site jamais \u00e0 piocher \u2013 mais je suis conscient de le faire et fait en sorte que cela se voit. Je ne sais plus quel est le cin\u00e9aste qui, lorsqu\u2019on lui reprochait d\u2019utiliser de vieux clich\u00e9s, r\u00e9pondit qu\u2019il allait faire des efforts pour trouver de nouveaux clich\u00e9s. Cette r\u00e9ponse s\u2019applique sans doute mieux encore au jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u2013 le probl\u00e8me n\u2019est pas d\u2019\u00e9chapper aux clich\u00e9s mais d\u2019en choisir des sympas et pas trop ringards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La peur du clich\u00e9 a conduit, depuis deux ou trois ans, \u00e0 un foisonnement de jeux aux th\u00e8mes artificiels, vaguement oniriques et g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement bien moins convaincants que les bonnes vieilles histoires sur lesquelles, le plus souvent, les auteurs avaient construits leur prototype. Il se trouve que je suis un peu historien, j\u2019ai quand m\u00eame un doctorat, mais jamais je n\u2019ai fait la moindre recherche sur les th\u00e8mes utilis\u00e9s dans mes jeux, et je ne cherche pas particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 faire de jeu sur les sujets et les p\u00e9riodes que connais. Je suis convaincu que pour fonctionner, un jeu, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire un univers extr\u00eamement simplifi\u00e9 et rationnel dans lequel les joueurs peuvent se prendre la t\u00eate quelque temps sans qu\u2019il y ait d\u2019enjeu r\u00e9el, ne peut \u00eatre construit que sur des concepts que les joueurs ma\u00eetrisent tous d\u00e9j\u00e0 et donc, sauf dans le cas des jeux abstraits, sur des clich\u00e9s. Si je construis un jeu sur des trucs que je sais mais que les joueurs ne savent pas, le jeu fonctionnera moins bien pour eux que pour moi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u2019ai con\u00e7u <em>M\u00e9nestrels<\/em> avec mon amie Sandra Pietrini. L\u2019id\u00e9e du jeu nous est certes venue de sa th\u00e8se sur la repr\u00e9sentation des jongleurs, danseurs et bouffons dans l\u2019iconographie de la fin du Moyen \u00c2ge. Pour autant, jamais il ne nous est venu \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de chercher dans le jeu \u00e0 apporter quelque information historique que ce soit. Tout au contraire, et cela est fort bien rendu par les illustrations de David Cochard, fort peu historiques, nous avons cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 jouer sur les poncifs, les clich\u00e9s, l\u2019imaginaire des joueurs. Il faut le dire, ou du moins montrer qu\u2019on le sait. C\u2019est sans doute pour cette raison que j\u2019ai toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9ticent \u00e0 l\u2019utilisation dans les jeux de graphismes trop r\u00e9alistes, et que j\u2019ai toujours privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 une approche humoristique et plus ou moins d\u00e9cal\u00e9e des th\u00e8mes. Le th\u00e8me d\u2019un jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est souvent plus proche de celui d\u2019une chansonnette que de celui d\u2019un roman historique, ou d\u2019un gros jeu video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certes, quelques auteurs font des jeux n\u00e9cessitant un peu de documentation historique, mais ils sont bien peu nombreux. Si je regarde sur les \u00e9tag\u00e8res qui sont derri\u00e8re moi tandis que j\u2019\u00e9cris cet article, je vois une bonne centaine de grosses boites de jeu\u2026 dont trois seulement, me semble-t-il, ont d\u00fb demander un effort de documentation historique, <em>Mombasa<\/em> de Alexander Pfister, <em>Dual Powers<\/em> de Brett Myers et surtout <em>Pax Pamir<\/em>, de Cole Wehrle. Ce sont donc clairement les exceptions qui confirment la r\u00e8gle, et non une r\u00e8gle que suivraient tous les auteurs. Outre que cela suppose, quel que soit le type jeu, une conception assez m\u00e9caniste de l\u2019histoire, cela pose le probl\u00e8me plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ral du jeu \u00e9ducatif, et, car c\u2019est un peu la m\u00eame chose, du jeu s\u00e9rieux, du jeu \u00e0 message ou du jeu ayant une \u00ab&nbsp;utilit\u00e9 sociale&nbsp;\u00bb autre que sa simple fonction de jeu. Depuis que je suis dans le petit monde du jeu, donc depuis quarante ans, j\u2019entends dire que le jeu est le futur de l\u2019\u00e9ducation, de la formation professionnelle, du travail, de la politique, de tout et n\u2019importe quoi sauf du jeu, et ce futur ne se r\u00e9alise toujours pas, ou de mani\u00e8re verbeuse, ridicule et inefficace. Il n\u2019y a rien d\u2019\u00e9tonnant \u00e0 cela, car si c\u2019est de la formation, du travail, de l\u2019\u00e9ducation, de l\u2019histoire, de la politique, c\u2019est du r\u00e9el, et, m\u00eame si deux ou trois m\u00e9canismes sont emprunt\u00e9s au monde ludique, ce qui n\u2019est pas v\u00e9cu comme un jeu ne peut pas \u00eatre un jeu. Ce qui n\u2019est pas un jeu ne peut pas non plus \u00eatre v\u00e9cu comme un jeu, sauf par des psychopathes \u2013 c\u2019est m\u00eame la d\u00e9finition de la psychopathie, penser que dans la vie, comme dans un jeu, la seule chose qui compte est de gagner. On en arrive au paradoxe qui fait que, lorsque l\u2019on essaie de donner au jeu une utilit\u00e9 sociale, on lui fait perdre sa seule r\u00e9elle utilit\u00e9 sociale, qui est de donner une occasion de s\u2019\u00e9chapper quelque peu d\u2019un r\u00e9el anxiog\u00e8ne et incompr\u00e9hensible, et de s\u2019en \u00e9chapper en groupe ce que ne permet pas la lecture de romans.<br>Dans une version plus r\u00e9cente cette volont\u00e9 de vouloir \u00e0 tout prix vouloir donner une &#8220;utilit\u00e9&#8221; au jeu a d\u00e9bouch\u00e9 sur la th\u00e9orie assez na\u00efve selon lequel les jeux de coop\u00e9ration rendraient les joueurs coop\u00e9ratifs et pacifiques, tandis que les jeux de comp\u00e9tition les rendraient comp\u00e9titifs et agressifs. J&#8217;esp\u00e8re que les &#8220;formateurs&#8221;, car ce sont souvent eux, qui avancent de telles th\u00e9ories ont arr\u00eat\u00e9 de pratiquer le loup-garou et toutes ses variantes, faute de quoi nous allons vers une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de d\u00e9lation g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De fa\u00e7on plus anecdotique, le jeu est souvent, notamment en milieu familial, un moyen de passer de bons moments avec des gens que l\u2019on aime bien mais avec qui on n\u2019a vraiment pas envie de discuter de choses s\u00e9rieuses, et surtout pas d\u2019histoire ou de politique, car c\u2019est un peu la m\u00eame chose. Du coup, si le jeu lui-m\u00eame prend une dimension politique, cela ne fonctionne plus. C\u2019est pour cette raison que, alors m\u00eame que je suis sans doute l\u2019un des auteurs de jeu qui aborde le plus souvent, sur ce site ou sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux, des probl\u00e9matiques politiques, j\u2019\u00e9vite g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement de donner une dimension clairement politique \u00e0 mes jeux, de les utiliser comme s\u2019ils \u00e9taient un texte, pour faire passer un message. <em>Terra<\/em>, et dans une moindre mesure <em>Kamasutra<\/em>, sont les deux seules exceptions. Il y a des gens dans les gouvernements et les conseils d\u2019administration que cela doit bien faire rigoler. Je ne dis pas qu\u2019on est manipul\u00e9s, on est parfaitement capable de prendre des voies de garage tout seuls, je dis juste que \u00e7a doit les faire doucement rigoler. La politique, ce n\u2019est pas seulement des principes, c\u2019est au moins autant l\u2019art de distinguer ce qui est important et ce qui ne l\u2019est pas, ce qui est une cause et ce qui est une cons\u00e9quence, et la gauche n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 aussi mauvaise \u00e0 cela qu\u2019aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revenons aux jeux. Je ne pense pas qu\u2019ils soient importants, mais je les aime bien et cela m\u2019amuse d\u2019en parler. Donc, les jeux doivent donc \u00eatre pratiqu\u00e9s avec s\u00e9rieux pour fonctionner &#8211; pas trop quand m\u00eame, on peut boire et rigoler un peu en jouant. Ils ne doivent pas en revanche \u00eatre pris &nbsp;trop au s\u00e9rieux, car ils cessent alors d\u2019\u00eatre des jeux et perdent toute efficacit\u00e9. Cela ne signifie pas que l\u2019on ne peut pas r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir sur les jeux, ce que j\u2019essaie de faire ici, cela signifie que l\u2019on ne peut pas vraiment r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir avec. <br>Et du coup, d\u00e9sol\u00e9, mais les auteurs de jeux ne p\u00e8seront jamais sur le cours de l&#8217;hsitoire comme les \u00e9crivains ou m\u00eame les cin\u00e9astes. The reader never perfectly knows and understands the characters in a novel. That\u2019s what makes them interesting, that\u2019s why they can be analyzed, that\u2019s why it\u2019s even possible to make them something very different that what the writer intended. The same is also true, to a lesser extent, of movie and even role playing games characters. There\u2019s always more in them than meets the eye, and that\u2019s why there is always, behind the text, a psychological, historical or fantasy context. There\u2019s nothing like this in boardgames, even when players are supposed to embody a character, which is not always the case. Boardgames are simple and completely closed systems, of which all the rules are known. One cannot imagine a complex psychology, motivations, personal history of a character whose characteristics are all perfectly known and usually expressed by numbers.&nbsp; As for players, their one and only motivation is trying to win, because that\u2019s what a game is. That\u2019s why, except in a few very specific cases, games cannot carry a deep meaning or a subtle message \u2013 they just carry numbers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>That\u2019s also why the best themes for games, the most efficient ones, are simple ones which are already perfectly known by everyone \u2013 that\u2019s the very definition of a clich\u00e9. History, science fiction, fantasy are immense reservoirs of clich\u00e9s in which I draw consciously, even when I very rarely now read science fiction or fantasy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don\u2019t remember which movie screenwriter, when criticized for using too many old clich\u00e9s, answered that he will do his best to use new clich\u00e9s. I would give the same answer about my games. The problem is not avoiding clich\u00e9s, it\u2019s choosing cute and up-to-date ones.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The fear of clich\u00e9s, the erroneous conviction that they are inherently bad, has led to a profusion of new games with vaguely oneiric settings, usually far less convincing than the well known stories designers had, in most cases, used for their prototypes. These games might be mechanically great, but they feel strange, like having no real theme but not being abstract either. I had a problem with one of the articles, which said that signatories intend to make serious historical and cultural research on the topics thy used in their designs. Even when it\u2019s not my day job, I am a bit of a historian \u2013 after all, I have a PhD \u2013 but I never did any research on the few historical themes which appear in my games, and I don\u2019t specifically try to design games about the topics and periods I studied. A game is an extremely simplified, closed and rational setting in which gamers can engage for a while with no real stake. It works only if built on knowledge all players already master, which means, except of course for abstract games, on clich\u00e9s. If I build a game on knowledge I have but players don\u2019t have, the game will not work as well for them as it does for me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I\u2019ve designed <\/em>M\u00e9nestrels (Minstrels,<em> only published in french so far) with my friend Sandra Pietrini. The idea for the game came indeed from her PhD about the image of wandering artists in the late Middle-Ages. We never tried, however, to bring any historical information into the game. On the opposite, as it clearly appears with David Cochard\u2019s art and the many caricatures of modern artists, we tried to exploit the clich\u00e9s about the Middle Ages. We should know about it and to acknowledge it. That\u2019s one one the reasons why I\u2019ve always been extremely wary of realistic art in my games, and always push towards cartoony or quirky art. The theme of a boardgame is more like the theme of a children or pop song than like the theme of a historical novel or a big video game.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There are a few authors who design game requiring some historical documentation, but there are not that many. When I turn my head and look at the shelves on the wall opposite my computer, I see a hundred big box games among which there seems to be only three, Alexander Pfister&#8217;s <\/em>Mombasa<em>, Brett Myers\u2019 <\/em>Dual Powers<em> and Cole Wehrle\u2019s <\/em>Pax Pamir<em>, required some historical documentation. They are obvious exceptions, the rule being not to bother with history. I\u2019ve not played <\/em>Pax Pamir<em> yet but I plan to do it one of these days since I\u2019ve really enjoyed, despite its complexity, another game by Cole Wehrle, Root. I guess that there\u2019s something with XIXth century Anglo-Russian rivalry in Persia making it a really good setting for a game \u2013 there\u2019s a reason why it was called \u00ab&nbsp;the Great Game&nbsp;\u00bb. If I really wanted to learn something on the subject, however, I would not play a game but read a few books. There are very different styles of boardgames, but all are in the end simple and closed mechanical systems, so looking at history via boardgames usually implies a mechanical view of history, which is not the case, or far less, with books or even movies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The main issue, however, is more global. I\u2019m designing boardgames for forty years now, and since forty years I\u2019m hearing, usually from people who know little about games, that gaming is the future of education, of professional training, of work, of politics, of almost everything except gaming. So far, this \u00ab&nbsp;bright&nbsp;\u00bb future has failed to come, except in ridiculously verbose and ineffective ways. This is not surprising \u2013 if it\u2019s training, if it\u2019s work, if it\u2019s education, if it\u2019s politics, it\u2019s reality. If it\u2019s reality, even when two or three mechanisms are borrowed from games, it\u2019s not a game. What is not lived as a game cannot be a game ; what is not a game cannot be lived as a game, except by psychopaths \u2013 that\u2019s even the definition of a psychopath, someone who acts as if in life, like in a game, the only goal is to win by all means.<\/em><br><em>The paradox is that trying to give games a social utility deprives them of their only true social utility, which is to give us an opportunity to escape for a while from a complex and nerve-racking world, and escape it together with friends, which is not the case with most other intellectual leisures.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Recently, this kind of reasoning has led to the naive nonsense that cooperative games make people peaceful and cooperative while competitive games make them agressive and competitive. I hope all the so-called educators who claim this have stopped playing werewolves, or we&#8217;re heading towards a society of generalized bad faith, informing and denunciation.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>More incidentally, games are often, especially in family context, a way to spend some good times with people you like but with whom you don\u2019t want to discuss history or politics, which is more or less the same thing. If the game itself becomes political, the whole trick falls apart. This is why, even when I am probably one of the game designers who is the most open about politics, be it on this website or on social networks, I usually avoid using games as if they were texts, to convey a political message \u2013 I can think of only two exceptions, <\/em>Terra<em> and, to a lesser extent, <\/em>Kamasutra<em>. And certainly not <\/em>Animocrazy<em>, since the only message you could get from it is that democracy always ends in a great mess, which is neither my opinion nor that of the Hong Kong publisher. It\u2019s nice and cute, but I find disturbing that there is so much more discussion today about diversity in spaceship crews, musicals casts and adventurer parties than there is about diversity in governments and boards of directors. My guess is that people in governments and boards of directors are having a good laugh. I&#8217;m not saying we\u2019re manipulated, we\u2019re certainly able to move onto storage tracks (do you say this in English?) just by ourselves, I\u2019m just saying that they probably have a good fun looking at this. Politics is about principles, but it is as much, if not more, about sorting what matters and what doesn\u2019t, what is a cause and what is consequence, and the left has never been as bad at this as it is now. Basically, that\u2019s Marx 101, power and money are the causes which need to be addressed, everything else is consequences.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But back to games \u2013 they\u2019re not important, but I like them and I enjoy discussing them. Games must be played with some serious and concentration, or they simply don\u2019t work \u2013 not too much serious and concentration though, we still need some room for drinks and jokes. Games must not, however, be taken too seriously, or they stop being games and lose all their interest and utility. This doesn\u2019t mean one cannot think about games, analyze them, which is what I\u2019m trying to do on this blog, it means one cannot think much with them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#8217;m sorry for my few friends who think they&#8217;re important, but game designers will never weigh on history like writers or even movie directors do.
