Je suis donc un vrai auteur de jeu, publi\u00e9 et tout, depuis trente-cinq ans, ce que ne me fait pas jeune. J\u2019ai bient\u00f4t 60 ans, \u00e2ge qui fut longtemps celui de la retraite, je ne sais plus bien \u00e0 quel \u00e2ge on la prend aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est devenu compliqu\u00e9, et je ne suis pas press\u00e9. Du coup, je me suis dit qu\u2019il serait int\u00e9ressant d\u2019essayer d\u2019analyser en quoi, en presque quarante ans, les jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 ont chang\u00e9, le monde des joueurs et des auteurs a chang\u00e9, et enfin le business du jeu a chang\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De meilleurs jeux<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame si je vais sans doute trouver le moyen de r\u00e2ler sur des points de d\u00e9tail, et pour la plupart tr\u00e8s r\u00e9cents, il me semble \u00e9vident que les jeux con\u00e7us et publi\u00e9s aujourd\u2019hui sont plus vari\u00e9s et de meilleure qualit\u00e9 que ceux d\u2019il y a quarante ans, et c\u2019est quand m\u00eame cela l\u2019essentiel.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai l\u2019habitude de comparer le monde du jeu \u00e0 celui de la litt\u00e9rature, et il semblerait certainement absurde de dire que la litt\u00e9rature du XIXe si\u00e8cle \u00e9tait globalement \u00ab\u00a0meilleure\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0moins bonne\u00a0\u00bb que celle d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui &#8211; elle \u00e9tait juste diff\u00e9rente. Pourtant, lorsque l\u2019on compare les jeux publi\u00e9s dans les ann\u00e9es soixante-dix et quatre-vingt, lorsque j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 m\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 cet univers, et ceux d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, le progr\u00e8s est \u00e9vident. Cela ne durera sans doute pas et est certainement li\u00e9 au fait que la culture du jeu, et pas seulement du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, le fait de consid\u00e9rer la cr\u00e9ation ludique comme une activit\u00e9 presque litt\u00e9raire, est un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne r\u00e9cent. Du coup, il y a eu quelques d\u00e9cennies de t\u00e2tonnement, le temps de construire une v\u00e9ritable grammaire ludique, et j\u2019ai eu la chance de vivre cette p\u00e9riode et de voir l\u2019imagination faire sans cesse progresser la cr\u00e9ation. Aujourd\u2019hui, on peut penser que cette grammaire est d\u00e9sormais en place et que, comme en musique, en cuisine ou en litt\u00e9rature, il n\u2019y aura plus vraiment de progr\u00e8s mais juste des modes, des \u00e9poques, des styles, des tendances.<br \/>\nQuoi qu\u2019il en soit, les meilleurs jeux des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt ou quatre-vingt-dix, s\u2019ils \u00e9taient publi\u00e9s aujourd\u2019hui, sembleraient sans doute int\u00e9ressants mais mal finis, rustiques, incomplets. C\u2019est notamment vrai de mes cr\u00e9ations &#8211; Citadelles reste un bon jeu, mais je n\u2019en vendrais certainement pas des millions s\u2019il \u00e9tait publi\u00e9 en 2021.<br \/>\nJe suis toujours surpris quand je vois des joueurs regretter le \u00ab\u00a0bon vieux temps\u00a0\u00bb des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt ou quatre-vingt dix. Certes, il y avait quelques bons jeux, mais pour quelques uns qui comme Cosmic Encounter, Le Li\u00e8vre et la Tortue, Taboo ou Ave Cesar ont assez bien vieilli, il y en a tant qui apparaissent avec le recul, et \u00e0 raison, lourdingues ou simplistes. C\u2019est d\u2019ailleurs le cas de mes premi\u00e8res cr\u00e9ations, Baston et La Vall\u00e9e des Mammouths, que je n\u2019oserais pas montrer \u00e0 un \u00e9diteur aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Des jeux plus vari\u00e9s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, le monde ludique \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s fragment\u00e9 entre les amateurs de jeux d\u2019ambiance (ce que l\u2019on appelle aujourd\u2019hui party games), de jeux de simulation (devenus ameritash), de jeux \u00e0 l\u2019allemande (devenus eurogames), et bient\u00f4t de jeux de r\u00f4les. M\u00eame pour ceux qui, comme moi et mon entourage, s\u2019int\u00e9ressaient un peu \u00e0 tout, ces univers \u00e9taient distincts. La richesse du monde ludique actuel tient en partie au fait que tout cela s\u2019est m\u00e9lang\u00e9, qu\u2019auteurs et \u00e9diteurs ne cessent de jouer avec les fronti\u00e8res, que le m\u00eame Vlaada Chvatil peut imaginer Through the Ages, qui m\u2019ennuie mais qui est s\u00fbrement un bon jeu, et Codenames, dont je ne me lasse pas. Cette vari\u00e9t\u00e9 est aussi due \u00e0 l\u2019incroyable bouillon de culture qui a permis l\u2019apparition de nouveaux genres, les jeux de cartes \u00e0 collectionner, le deck building, les jeux coop\u00e9ratifs adultes, les jeux legacy, des genres qui ont permis \u00e0 la culture ludique de se d\u00e9multiplier et auxquels seule l\u2019\u00e2ge et la paresse m\u2019ont emp\u00each\u00e9 de m\u2019int\u00e9resser de trop pr\u00e8s. Le monde du jeu des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt produisait des jeux b\u00e2cl\u00e9s, dans des genres balis\u00e9s, d\u2019un int\u00e9r\u00eat limit\u00e9, destin\u00e9s \u00e0 un public restreint. Celui d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui cr\u00e9e des jeux finis, int\u00e9ressants et pour tous les go\u00fbts.<\/p>\n<p>Du coup, pour les auteurs comme moi, la concurrence devient plus rude. Les jeunes auteurs ont une culture ludique tr\u00e8s large, ce qui a longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 mon point fort, et ont une \u00e9nergie que je n\u2019ai plus. Je vais sans doute d\u2019une part ralentir le rythme, et d\u2019autre part ne plus vraiment essayer de me renouveler, de changer de style, d\u2019exp\u00e9rimenter. Apr\u00e8s tout, il y a des gens qui font bien mieux que moi le deckbuilding ou le jeu coop\u00e9ratif, autant que je continue \u00e0 faire des jeux d\u2019ambiance idiots et des jeux de bluffs m\u00e9chants, c\u2019est ce que l\u2019on attend de moi et il semble que ce soit ce que je fais le mieux.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeux, \u00e9ducation et politique<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>une tendance inqui\u00e9tante, pas vraiment nouvelle mais qui a pris de l\u2019ampleur depuis une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es et dont je crains un peu qu\u2019elle ne tue la joyeuse cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 du monde ludique d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, est la mode du jeu \u00e9ducatif, des \u00ab\u00a0serious games\u00a0\u00bb, des jeux qui pensent ou veulent avoir une utilit\u00e9 sociale ou un message politique. Mais bon, tout le monde a compris que la litt\u00e9rature lourdement didactique n\u2019\u00e9tait pas de la litt\u00e9rature, je pense donc que tout le monde va assez vite comprendre que les jeux \u00e0 message ne sont pas vraiment des jeux. Cela fait d\u2019ailleurs quarante ans que j\u2019entends dire que le jeu est le futur de l\u2019\u00e9ducation, et que ce futur ne s\u2019est pas r\u00e9alis\u00e9; il est donc tout \u00e0 fait possible que moi ou d\u2019autres l\u2019entendent encore dans quarante ans. Tant que ce n\u2019est pas le pr\u00e9sent de l\u2019\u00e9ducation, tout va bien, on a le droit de ne pas m\u00e9langer les torchons et les serviettes, de jouer d\u2019une part et d\u2019enseigner d\u2019autre part, ce qui est plus efficace, plus sympa et plus honn\u00eate que ne faire aucun des deux en pr\u00e9tendant tout faire \u00e0 la fois.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame chose pour le jeu politique et socialement conscient, tout \u00e7a. Je suis politique, je suis sans doute l\u2019un des auteurs de jeu qui parle le plus de politique sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux, et certains s\u2019en plaignent. En revanche, non, mes jeux ne sont pas politiques et ne le seront jamais parce que si un jeu est s\u00e9rieux, si un jeu a un message, ce n\u2019est plus un jeu et je n\u2019ai pas envie d\u2019y jouer. J\u2019ai d\u00e9j\u00e0 expliqu\u00e9 longuement ma position sur ce blog, je ne vais pas y revenir encore. Le jeu est fait pour \u00eatre jou\u00e9, la litt\u00e9rature pour \u00eatre lue, la musique pour \u00eatre \u00e9cout\u00e9e, la vie pour \u00eatre v\u00e9cue, on peut m\u00e9langer un peu \u00e0 l\u2019occasion, mais pas trop, pas trop souvent, et pas trop s\u00e9rieusement. Quand j\u2019ai envie de discuter politique, je discute politique; quand j\u2019ai envie de jouer, je joue. Le jeu n\u2019est pas plus un outil de discussion ou de r\u00e9flexion que la peinture ou la cuisine. Et puis, j\u2019essaie suffisamment d\u2019\u00eatre utile dans ma vie pour qu\u2019on ne vienne pas en plus m\u2019emmerder en me demandant de faire des jeux utiles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeux de table sur \u00e9cran ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Il y a eu d\u2019abord les adaptations de jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 pour jouer seul sur sa tablette ou son ordinateur, puis les sites de jeu en ligne comme Boardgame arena ou Tabletop arena. Je n\u2019ai aucune id\u00e9e de l\u2019audience r\u00e9elle de ces sites, mais j\u2019ai quand m\u00eame l\u2019impression qu\u2019ils se sont pas mal d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s, surtout ces derniers mois avec la pand\u00e9mie. Or ni le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 en solitaire, que ce soit d\u2019ailleurs contre un ordinateur ou contre un \u00ab\u00a0automa\u00a0\u00bb de carton, ne m\u2019excite vraiment. Quant au jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 en ligne, que j\u2019ai fini par essayer, il m\u2019ennuie profond\u00e9ment &#8211; tant qu\u2019\u00e0 jouer sur un \u00e9cran, autant faire des trucs que l\u2019on ne peut pas faire dans le monde r\u00e9el, de vrais jeux videos, m\u00eame si je ne les pratique en fait pas beaucoup plus.<br \/>\nLe jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 pour moi un moyen de passer du bon temps avec des amis en buvant un peu et sans discuter de sujets trop personnels ou politiques. Si cette dimension sociale disparait, je n\u2019en vois plus trop l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat; tout seul, je bois moins et pr\u00e9f\u00e8re lire un livre que jouer. Le jeu vid\u00e9o, le jeu de cartes \u00e0 collectionner, les jeux de r\u00f4les ont beaucoup aid\u00e9 mais, de plus en plus, des joueurs viennent directement au jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 sans \u00eatre pass\u00e9s par l\u2019un d\u2019entre eux, preuve que le jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est devenu un loisir culturel l\u00e9gitime. J\u2019ai toujours pens\u00e9 qu\u2019il l\u2019\u00e9tait, mais alors que je passais il y a trente ans pour un gamin attard\u00e9, je suis aujourd\u2019hui en disant \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s la m\u00eame chose un intellectuel des plus l\u00e9gitimes. Finalement, je n\u2019avais sans doute pas besoin de faire un break pour pr\u00e9parer une th\u00e8se d\u2019histoire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diversit\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, le monde ludique \u00e9tait allemand, am\u00e9ricain marginalement fran\u00e7ais, anglais ou italien, et clairement masculin. Il est aujourd\u2019hui infiniment plus vari\u00e9. Les femmes sont encore minoritaires chez les auteurs, mais si l\u2019\u00e9volution en cours se poursuit, cela ne devrait pas durer. Surtout, elles ne sont plus cantonn\u00e9es comme elles l\u2019\u00e9taient dans le monde un peu \u00e0 part des jeux pour enfants. Apr\u00e8s que les \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9coles\u00a0\u00bb am\u00e9ricaines et allemandes se sont m\u00e9lang\u00e9es, prouvant que leurs sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s \u00e9taient purement contingentes, on a vu arriver les auteurs et les \u00e9diteurs d\u2019Europe de l\u2019Est, puis de Cor\u00e9e et du Japon, et aujourd\u2019hui de Chine, d\u2019Am\u00e9rique du Sud et du Moyen-Orient.<\/p>\n<p>Cette joyeuse diversit\u00e9 des auteurs et \u00e9diteurs ne signifie pas vraiment pour autant une diversit\u00e9 d\u2019approches, et nous ne devons pas laisser ceux qui veulent absolument tout mettre dans des cases la d\u00e9truire. Les diff\u00e9rences entre les jeux d\u2019Orient et d\u2019Occident ne vont gu\u00e8re au del\u00e0 du graphisme et de la taille des boites. Les cor\u00e9ens comme les fran\u00e7ais peuvent faire des jeux d\u2019ambiance d\u00e9biles, et il n\u2019y a pas vraiment de diff\u00e9rences entre la gestion d\u2019une caravane de marchands dans la Chine ancienne et dans l\u2019Allemagne m\u00e9di\u00e9vale. Il n\u2019y a pas plus de diff\u00e9rence entre un jeu con\u00e7u par un homme ou une femme qu\u2019entre un plat cuisin\u00e9 par un homme ou une femme. Et c\u2019est tant mieux.<br \/>\nJ\u2019en viens \u00e0 esp\u00e9rer que le jeu puise contribuer \u00e0 d\u00e9molir le discours triste et r\u00e9actionnaire, faussement de gauche et faussement tol\u00e9rant, qui en rajoute sur des diff\u00e9rences culturelles r\u00e9elles mais tr\u00e8s superficielles et veut absolument ranger tout le monde dans des identit\u00e9s n\u00e9cessairement malheureuses. Le monde du jeu est devenu un joyeux d\u00e9sordre plus cosmopolite que multiculturel, avec des hommes, des femmes et des trucs branch\u00e9s entre les deux, avec des jeunes et des vieux, avec des japonais, des am\u00e9ricains, des iraniens, des russes, des br\u00e9siliens, des cor\u00e9ens et des gens dont je ne sais pas trop d\u2019o\u00f9 ils sortent et qui parlent anglais avec un accent bizarre. C\u2019est plus rigolo que quand il n\u2019y avait que des quadrag\u00e9naires barbus am\u00e9ricains et allemands, \u00e7a donne des occasions de voyager &#8211; enfin, \u00e7a permettait avant cette salet\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9pid\u00e9mie, et j\u2019esp\u00e8re que \u00e7a va reprendre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Je ne peux pas dire \u00e0 quelle date exacte je suis devenu un v\u00e9ritable \u00ab\u00a0professionnel du jeu\u00a0\u00bb, mais, m\u00eame si je suis encore prof \u00e0 mi temps et consacre bien plus de temps \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer mes cours qu\u2019\u00e0 travailler sur des jeux de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, je le suis incontestablement devenu. L\u2019incroyable d\u00e9veloppement du jeu de soci\u00e9t\u00e9, d\u2019abord en Occident, puis dans le reste du monde, depuis une quarantaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es fait que le milieu ne ressemble plus vraiment \u00e0 ce qu\u2019il \u00e9tait quand j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9. Les joueurs sont bien plus nombreux et plus critiques, les auteurs sont bien plus nombreux et plus cultiv\u00e9s, les \u00e9diteurs sont bien plus nombreux et, pour certains d\u2019entre eux, plus gros.<\/p>\n<p>De petite boite cr\u00e9\u00e9e par trois copains, Asmod\u00e9e, avec qui je travaille quasiment depuis sa cr\u00e9ation, est devenue une multinationale contr\u00f4l\u00e9e par un fond de pension. Une autre entreprise que je fr\u00e9quente depuis quarante ans, Gigamic, vient d\u2019\u00eatre rachet\u00e9e par Hachette, l\u2019un des plus grands \u00e9diteurs de livres fran\u00e7ais. On aurait pu craindre que cette arriv\u00e9e du gros capital dans un petit monde de passionn\u00e9s se traduise par un d\u00e9ficit d\u2019\u00e2me, mais ce ne fut pas le cas. Les relations entre auteurs et \u00e9diteurs n\u2019ont pas tellement chang\u00e9, et \u00eatre d\u00e9charg\u00e9s des questions quotidiennes de gestion a m\u00eame permis \u00e0 quelques uns de se consacrer plus encore \u00e0 leur passion, l\u2019\u00e9dition ludique. Et puis, il y a toujours de la place pour les petits et les moyens, venus du monde entier, et qui ne finissent pas tous pour \u00eatre rachet\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019autre \u00e9volution notable, plus r\u00e9cente et dont je ne sais pas encore trop quoi penser tant j\u2019y vois \u00e0 la fois des aspects positifs et n\u00e9gatifs, c\u2019est kickstarter. C\u00f4t\u00e9 positif, cela rend l\u2019\u00e9dition plus facile, moins risqu\u00e9e, et permet sans doute la sortie de jeux trop bizarres ou trop ambitieux qui n\u2019auraient pas eu leur chance dans le circuit traditionnel. C\u00f4t\u00e9 n\u00e9gatif, cela nuit au petit commerce et a quelques effets pervers sur la nature des jeux, parfois mieux produits que con\u00e7us.<\/p>\n<p>Et puis, et c\u2019est sans doute le plus triste, comme sans doute chaque fois qu\u2019un secteur de la culture devient un peu populaire, on a vu arriver quelques escrocs, dans le cas du jeu plus des jeunes margoulins sans scrupules que de vrais capitalistes aux dents longues. Profitant de l\u2019ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 du droit sur les cr\u00e9ations ludiques, ils se sp\u00e9cialisent, notamment en France, dans le plagiat. Quand les \u00e9diteurs de Limite Limite et Blanc Manger Coco plagiaient des auteurs am\u00e9ricains \u00e0 succ\u00e8s peu sympathiques et peu concern\u00e9s, cela ne me g\u00eanait pas trop. Quand ils commencent \u00e0 reprendre, dans des \u00e9ditions b\u00e2cl\u00e9es, les jeux d\u2019auteurs et d\u2019\u00e9diteurs plus modestes, cela devient un probl\u00e8me. N\u2019achetez rien qui vienne de chez eux, c\u2019est le seul moyen que nous avons pour peut-\u00eatre, un jour, nous d\u00e9barrasser de ces tristes individus.<\/p>\n<p>Voila. This means I\u2019m a true game designer, published and all, for thirty-five years, and it also means I\u2019m starting to get old. I\u2019m nearing 60, which has long been the standard age for retirement &#8211; I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a standard anymore, and I\u2019m in no hurry. Nevertheless, I thought it might be interesting to have a look back and try to see what has changed in these thirty five years with games, with gamers and game designers, and with the boardgame business.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Better games<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I may have a few issues with minor and recent trends, which I\u2019ll develop later, but it\u2019s obvious to me that, on\u00a0 average, the boardgames designed and published now are much better and more varied than those from the eighties and nineties, and that\u2019s the more important.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I often compare the gaming world with that of literature, and it would certainly sound absurd to say that XIXth century literature was globally \u00ab better \u00bb or \u00ab worse \u00bb than today\u2019s one &#8211; it was just different. It\u2019s not the same with games. When I compare the games that were available when I started to be interested in gaming and the games that are published now, the overall quality has clearly improved. This is probably due to the fact that the gaming culture, in part thanks to the emergence of video games, is something recent, as is the idea that game design is something more akin to literature than it is to technics and maths. There has been a few exciting decades of trial and errors, of experiences, which generated a kind of \u00ab gaming grammar \u00bb, and I was lucky enough to be there and to see imagination generate creativity. This grammar is probably more or less in place now, and there will probably be no more real improvement but rather, like with music, literature or cooking, fashions, trends, and styles.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Anyway, if the best games from the eighties and even the nineties were published today, they would probably be considered interesting but rough and unfinished. This especially true of some of my own designs, including the most successful, Citadels. It would still be a good game if published in 2020, but it would not sell millions of copies.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m always surprised when I see a few gamers lament over the \u00ab good old times \u00bb of game design. I can find a few games I used to play in my twenties that aged well, like Cosmic Encounter, Hare and Tortoise, Taboo or Ave Caesar, but most others would certainly feel simplistic or terribly heavy if we tried to play them today. I would not dare today to show to a publisher my first designs, Baston and Valley of the Mammoths.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Varied games, varied styles<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>In the eighties, the gaming world was extremely divided. Some people played party games, other played simulation games, other german games (soon to be renamed eurogames). It was also the beginning of role playing games. Even for the few people who, like me and my friends, were interested in all of these, they were still distinct genres and styles. The charm and richness of todays gaming world comes from the fact that everything has been mixed, that designers and publishers are always crossing borders. The same designer, Vlaada Chvatil, can design Through the Ages, which I find boring but is certainly a great game in its style, and Codenames, which I could play for days. This incredible culture broth also generated new genres like collectable card games, deckbuilding games, cooperative games, legacy games. They all made the gaming culture more rich and interesting ; old age and laziness are probably the only reasons why I didn\u2019t really try my hand at them. In eighties, we designed unfinished games, in very restricted genres, with limited interest, to a very specific audience. Now, designers are creating well tested and exciting games, in diverse and dynamic styles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This means competition has become harder for old designers like me. Newcomers have a large gaming culture, which has long been my strong suit, and far more energy than me. I\u2019ll probably slow down, and stop trying to innovate and change style. After all, others are much better than me at doing deckbuilding and cooperative game, let\u2019s focus on what I enjoy the most playing and what publishers are expecting from me, stupid party games and nasty bluffing games.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Games, teaching and politics<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>There are a few worrying trends. One is the fashionable discourse about educational and serious games, which is trying to kill the fun and creativity of modern game design. It will probably fail. Every book-addict has understood that heavily didactic literature is not literature, I think every gamer will soon understand that games with a message are not really games.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As a teacher, I\u2019ve been told for about forty years now that gaming is the future of education, and this future so far failed to realize, so the best we can hope is that we will still hear it for forty more years with no real effect. As long as it\u2019s not the present of education, everything is fine, I don\u2019t gave to mix apples and oranges, I can teach on the one side and play games on the other and not, which is more efficient and honest than pretending to do both with doing none.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s the same with political and socially conscious game, and all that stuff. I\u2019m political, I\u2019m probably one of the game designers who talks the most about politics on social networks, and gamer fans sometimes complain. On the other hand, no, my games are not political, and they will never be, because if a game is political, if a game has a message, it\u2019s no more a game (for tons of reasons I\u2019ve developped in older blogposts) and I don\u2019t want to play it &#8211; and I even think the idea of a political game is politically dangerous (for tons of reasons I\u2019ve developped in the same blogposts). Games are made to played, books are made to be read, music is made to be listened to, life is made to be lived. When I want to discuss politics, I discuss politics; when I want to play games, not necessarily with the same people, I play games. Games are no more a political discussion tool than cooking or music. And I\u2019m doing enough trying to be useful in real life not to bother about making useful games. You can do what you want with my games, but they\u2019re not designed to be sociallu useful, except just by being games.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Boardgames on a screen ?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>First came boardgame apps to play against one\u2019s phone or computer, then boardgame websites like Boardgame Arena, Tabletopia or Tabletop Arena. I\u2019ve no idea of the real audience of these sites, but it looks like they\u2019re having some success, especially these last months thanks to the pandemic. I don\u2019t enjoy solo boardgaming, be it against a computer or against a cardboard \u00ab\u00a0automa\u00a0\u00bb. As for online boardgaming, I finally tried and I find it boring. It feels a bit strange to use a computer to simulate something one can do without it &#8211; better play true video games one cannot play in real life, even when I catually don\u2019t play them much more. My idea of boardgaming is just a way to spend some good times with friends, drinking a bit and not talking about politics. If this social aspect is taken away, I\u2019d rather read a book than play. Of course, the rise of video games, collectable card games and role playing games also helped, but more and more gamers are going directly into boardgaming, which has now become a legitimate cultural activity. Of course, I always thought it was one, but thirty years ago, most people saw me as an old kid; I\u2019m doing and saying the same things now, and I\u2019m almost considered an intellectual. May be I didn\u2019t need to take a break and do a PhD.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Diversity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>In the eighties, the boardgaming world was mostly German and American, marginally French, English or Italian, and overwhelmingly male. It\u2019s much more diverse now. Women are still a minority among designers, but it\u2019s changing fast and it probably won\u2019t be the case anymore once my generation is retired. More significatively, they are no more confined in the small world of children games. We\u2019ve seen new publishers and designers first from eastern Europe, then Korea and Japan, now China and the Middle East, the boardgaming world has become globalized. That&#8217;s great, and we must not let those who want to pigeonhole everyone destroy this cosmopolitanism.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There\u2019s now a fun variety of designers and publishers, of people and languages, but they are mostly doing the same kind of games and the gaming world is more cosmopolitan than multicultural. Boardgames are more like literature or cooking than like music : the cultural differences between east and west, north and south, are extremely superficial, mostly anecdotical, art style and box size. French and Koreans can design stupid zany party games, there\u2019s no difference between the management of a merchant caravan in ancient China and in medieval Germany, and there\u2019s no more difference between a game designed by a man or a woman than between a meal cooked by a man or a woman.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I hope boardgames can help deconstruct the sad and reactionary discourse, falsely leftist and falsely tolerant, which overemphasize our very superficial cultural differences and tries to have evryone fit and stay in their small cultural hamlet, and be proud of it. The boardgaming world has become a good example of a fun cosmopolitan mess, with people from different generations working together, with men, women and everything in between, with Japanese, Americans, Russians, Iranians, Brasilians, Koreans and people from god knows where who speak English with a strange accent. It\u2019s more fun than when there were only German bearded guys, it makes for travel oportunities &#8211; well, it did until this stupid pandemic and I hope this will start again some day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Business<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I can\u2019t say when I became a real \u00ab\u00a0professional\u00a0\u00bb game designer. I\u2019m still a part time teacher, I spend more time working on my lectures than on new games, but everyone seems to consider that my real job is to design games, so they\u2019re probably right. Anyway, the boardgaming business changed a lot in the thirty five years since I published my first game. It has become bigger and more international. There are many more gamers, which know much more about games and are more discriminate. There are more game designers, who also master a much larger gaming culture. There are also more, and for many of them bigger, publishers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I can still remember when Asmod\u00e9e, with which I\u2019m working almost from the beginning, was a small three persons company. It is now a multinational firm owned by a pension fund. Another company I know for almost forty years, Gigamic, has been bought by Hachette, one of the biggest French publishing company. Surprisingly,no one seems to have lost their soul. The relations between designers and publishers didn\u2019t change much, and many publishers are even more involved in their passion, games, now that other people are taking care of the financial issues. And there is still room in the business for middle-sized and smaller companies, which don\u2019t always end being bought by big sharks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A more recent change is the rise of kickstarter, and I still don\u2019t really know what to think about it. On the plus side, it makes publishing games a less risky business and certainly helped publish a few games which would have been too bizarre or too ambitious for the standard publishing model. On the minus side, it\u2019s bad for small shops and has a few perverse effect on games, which are sometimes better produced than designed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The really bad thing is that, like it happens every time a business grows too fast, crooks are coming in. There seems to be more and more plagiaries of published games, which is relatively easy to do since, in most countries, the law has not been designed for us and is very ambiguous on whether game systems are or not an intelectual property. Shame on the crooks, don&#8217;t buy their stuff.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That&#8217;s all, I think.
