Ces id\u00e9es sont d\u2019une part que les jeux auraient ou devraient n\u00e9cessairement avoir une utilit\u00e9 socio-politique ou p\u00e9dagogique, et d\u2019autre part qu\u2019ils auraient partie li\u00e9e avec les math\u00e9matiques.<\/p>\n<p>Je passerai rapidement sur le premier point, que j\u2019ai souvent d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 ici. Je suis sans doute plus politique, et parle plus souvent de politique, que la plupart des auteurs de jeux. Mais lorsque je joue, ce n\u2019est pas pour comprendre ou transformer le monde, c\u2019est pour m\u2019en \u00e9chapper quelque temps, comme lorsque je lis un roman ou vais \u00e0 un concert, et pour prendre du plaisir avec des amis avec qui je n\u2019ai pas n\u00e9cessairement envie de parler de politique. Un jeu avec un message, c\u2019est comme un roman avec un message &#8211; parfois \u00e7a marche, surtout quand il y a un peu d\u2019humour pour faire passer, mais la plupart du temps c\u2019est assez lourdingue.<\/p>\n<p>Je voudrais parler un peu plus aujourd\u2019hui de la th\u00e9orie selon laquelle les jeux rel\u00e8veraient de l\u2019analyse math\u00e9matique, th\u00e9orie qui sans doute est \u00e0 la fois vraie et fausse.<\/p>\n<p>Le monde r\u00e9el a tr\u00e8s certainement une structure rationnelle. Les jeux \u00e9tant des petits mondes infiniment plus simples que la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ils en ont une aussi, plus simple et donc plus compr\u00e9hensible. Il reste que, dans l\u2019\u00e9tat actuel de nos connaissances, cette structure n\u2019est parfaitement r\u00e9ductible \u00e0 un mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique que pour un petit nombre de jeux, essentiellement ceux fond\u00e9s sur la strat\u00e9gie ou les probabilit\u00e9s. Avec les jeux de r\u00f4les, les jeux d\u2019ambiance, les jeux de mots ou de lettres, et m\u00eame dans une moindre mesure les jeux de bluff, cela ne fonctionne pas vraiment. Du coup, les th\u00e9oriciens du jeu math\u00e9matique oublient ces cat\u00e9gories, ou les disqualifient comme n\u2019\u00e9tant pas vraiment des jeux, ce qui va clairement \u00e0 l\u2019encontre de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience quotidienne des joueurs. Nombre de jeux sont plein de chiffres, sur les cartes ou sur les d\u00e9s, mais beaucoup n\u2019en ont aucun. Il n\u2019y en a pas, par exemple, sur les cartes des Loups Garous ou de Just One. Et m\u00eame dans les jeux les plus formalis\u00e9s, Azul ou The Crew par exemple, le mod\u00e8le math\u00e9matique est bien incapable de saisir ce qui fait que l\u2019on a affaire \u00e0 un jeu et non \u00e0 un probl\u00e8me de maths, et que l\u2019on en tire donc un plaisir totalement diff\u00e9rent.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019en veux un peu aux math\u00e9maticiens qui, dans les ann\u00e9es quarante, ont baptis\u00e9 \u00ab th\u00e9orie des jeux \u00bb un ensemble de mod\u00e8les math\u00e9matiques qui, s\u2019ils peuvent s\u2019appliquer \u00e0 certains jeux, s\u2019appliquent tout aussi bien \u00e0 de nombreux domaines de la politique, de l\u2019\u00e9conomie ou de la physique. Je suis prof de sociologie et d\u2019\u00e9conomie en lyc\u00e9e. Chaque fois que je dis que je cr\u00e9e des jeux, l\u2019administration me parle de jeux p\u00e9dagogiques, auxquels je suis hostile et qui de toute fa\u00e7on sont presque toujours \u00e0 la fois de mauvais jeux et de tr\u00e8s mauvais outils p\u00e9dagogiques. Les profs de maths, eux, me branchent sur la th\u00e9orie des jeux et je dois leur expliquer que c\u2019est un domaine auquel je m\u2019int\u00e9resse un peu, mais qui n\u2019a pas de lien particulier avec le jeu et devrait sans doute s\u2019appeler \u00ab th\u00e9orie des choix rationnels en environnement incertain \u00bb, ou quelque chose comme \u00e7a, m\u00eame si c\u2019est un peu plus long. Et les environnements incertains, ce n\u2019est pas ce qui manque en ce moment, et pas seulement dans les jeux.<\/p>\n<p>J\u2019ai parfois utilis\u00e9 la th\u00e9orie des jeux dans mes cr\u00e9ations. Terra est b\u00e2ti sur le paradoxe du passager clandestin, Dolor\u00e8s sur le dilemme du prisonnier, mais ces outils servent autant, voire plus, dans bien d\u2019autres domaines qui n\u2019ont rien \u00e0 voir avec le jeu. J\u2019ai parfois besoin de faire un peu de probabilit\u00e9s ou de d\u00e9nombrement pour \u00e9quilibrer un jeu de cartes ou de d\u00e9s, mais jamais rien qui aille au del\u00e0 des programmes de maths de lyc\u00e9e. Et puis si j\u2019utilise un peu de maths, j\u2019utilise aussi un peu de linguistique, un peu d\u2019histoire, un peu d\u2019imagination, un peu de tout en fait. De ce point de vue, concevoir un jeu, et m\u00eame un jeu plein de d\u00e9s, de jetons et de cartes num\u00e9rot\u00e9es, s\u2019apparente bien plus \u00e0 la r\u00e9daction d\u2019un article qu\u2019\u00e0 la r\u00e9solution d\u2019un probl\u00e8me de maths.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a certes des maths dans les jeux, mais il n\u2019y en a proportionnellement pas beaucoup plus que dans la vraie vie. Il y a certes des maths dans les jeux, mais il y aussi plein d\u2019autres choses qui ne peuvent pas s\u2019y ramener. Il y a des auteurs de jeux qui sont au d\u00e9part des scientifiques, comme Bruno Cathala, il y en a d\u2019autres comme moi qui sont des litt\u00e9raires. They seem to be back in fashion, and I don\u2019t like it. The first one is that games should have a socio-political impact, or at least some pedagogical utility. The second is that games are mostly about maths.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I won\u2019t be long on the first point, I\u2019ve already written about it a few times here. I\u2019m probably more political, and write more about politics, than most game designers. When I play, however, it is not to change the world, it is not even to understand it, it is to escape from it for a while, like when I read a book or go to a concert, and to have fun with friends with whom I don\u2019t necessarily want to discuss politics. Games with a message are like novels with a message, they sometimes work, especially when there\u2019s some humor to sweeten the pill, but most times they feel just heavy and boring.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today\u2019s topic is more the idea that games are a matter of mathematics, a theory which is both true and false.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The real world certainly has some rational structure. Games being smaller and simpler worlds, they also have one, and one that is much easier to observe and understand. The problem is that this structure can be reduced to a mathematical model only in some very specific cases, mostly game of pure strategy and games based on probabilities. It can\u2019t be done with role playing games, larps, party games, word games and even bluffing games. As a result, mathematicians disqualify them as \u00ab\u00a0not really games\u00a0\u00bb, which clearly goes against every gamer\u2019s daily experience. Many games have numbers on dice or cards, but many also don\u2019t. There\u2019s not a single number on the cards of Werewolves or Just One. Even with extremely formalized games, such as Azul or The Crew, the mathematical model cannot grasp what makes them games and not math problems, and why the pleasure we get from them is completely different.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I resent mathematicians who, in the forties, decided to call \u00ab game theory \u00bb a corpus of mathematical models which can be applied to some games, but also to a bunch of other domains, such as politics, economics or physics. I\u2019m teaching sociology and economics in high school. Every time I tell I\u2019m designing boardgames, the school management asks me about games as teaching tools, which are usually not really games and terrible teaching tools. Math teachers then tell me about \u00ab game theory \u00bb and I have to explain that while I\u2019m quite interested in it, it doesn\u2019t have any specific relations with actual games. This theory should probably have been called \u00ab theory of rational choices in an uncertain environment \u00bb, or something like this, even when it\u2019s a bit longer. And uncertain environments are everywhere these days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve sometimes used game theory in my designs. Terra is built on the free rider paradox, H.M.S Dolores on the prisoner\u2019s dilemma, but these theoretical tools can be used as well in many situations which have nothing to do with gaming. I sometimes use some maths to balance a game, usually costing and probabilities, but never needed anything above high school level. And I also use some linguistics, history, imagination, a bit of everything. Designing a game, even a game using dice, chips or numbered cards, feels more like writing a dissertation than like solving a math problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are some maths in games, but the proportion is probably only slightly higher than in real life. There are some maths in games, but there are also tons of things which cannot be reduced to maths. Some game designers are math heads, like Bruno Cathala, some have a literary background, like me.
