J’ai pass\u00e9 une dizaine d’ann\u00e9es – les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt – \u00e0 jouer aux jeux de r\u00f4les \u00e0 l’ancienne, sur table, puis une dizaine – les ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt-dix – \u00e0 faire r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement du jeu de r\u00f4les grandeur-nature. J’en ai gard\u00e9 le go\u00fbt des jeux \u00e0 th\u00e8me fort, et le sentiment que le jeu de r\u00f4les \u00e9tait un peu l’aboutissement du jeu, toutes les autres formes ludiques n’en \u00e9tant que des succ\u00e9dan\u00e9s un peu l\u00e2ches et paresseux. Parce que je vieillis, parce que je n’ai pas le temps, parce qu’il fallait passer \u00e0 autre chose, j’ai arr\u00eat\u00e9 le jeu de r\u00f4les, mais je l’ai toujours un peu regrett\u00e9.<\/p>\n

J’y retourne un peu avec Speed Dating, le jeu de cartes d\u00e9lirant que j’ai con\u00e7u avec mon amie Nathalie Grandperrin. Dans Speed \u00a0Dating, chacun doit utiliser les cartes de sa main pour pr\u00e9senter un personnage et expliquer \u00e0 un autre joueur qu’il est l’homme ou la femme, de sa vie. Speed Dating est donc une sorte de jeu de r\u00f4les minimaliste, dans lequel votre personnage est constitu\u00e9 de trois petites cartes, toujours diff\u00e9rentes, par exemple : Collectionne les armes de guerre, Passe ses vacances au Kazakhstan, Son livre pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 : le petit prince (cartes hommes), ou se nourrit de l\u00e9gumes bio, adore raconter son enfance avec des parents \u00e9changistes, veut sauver les baleines (cartes femmes). Le sc\u00e9nario, lui, est toujours le m\u00eame, une soir\u00e9e de Speed Dating. Au Dernier bar avant la fin du monde, o\u00f9 j’ai fait pas mal de soir\u00e9es test ces derniers mois, Speed Dating est celui de mes prototypes qui a le mieux tourn\u00e9, et cela n’a rien d’\u00e9tonnant. Ce jeu de cartes, avec ses r\u00e8gles simplissimes, se pr\u00eate fort bien \u00e0 l\u2019ambiance de bistrot, y compris apr\u00e8s quelques cocktails, et beaucoup de geeks sont d’anciens r\u00f4listes.<\/p>\n

Si Speed Dating est techniquement une sorte d’\u00e9pure de jeu de r\u00f4les, c’est quand m\u00eame d’abord un cousin de Taboo, Time’s Up ou The Big Idea, et c’est plus \u00e0 ces jeux d’ambiance dr\u00f4les et d\u00e9lirants que l’on pense en y jouant. Les jeux d’ambiance, les party games, sont un genre que j’ai toujours beaucoup appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 comme joueur, faisant d’innombrables parties de Taboo dans ma jeunesse, \u00a0de Big Idea, de Gift Trap ou de Win ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, mais qui m’a longtemps pos\u00e9 probl\u00e8me comme auteur, mes tentatives \u00e9chouant r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement, ou s’av\u00e9rant trop proches de jeux d\u00e9j\u00e0 existants. Sans que je sache tr\u00e8s bien pourquoi, tout semble s’\u00eatre d\u00e9bloqu\u00e9 d\u00e9but 2012 et j’ai imagin\u00e9 coup sur coup plusieurs party games dont je suis assez content. Speed Dating, puis le tout aussi d\u00e9lirant Mouette Rieuse, avec mon amie Nathalie Grandperrin, A Day in my Life avec une autre jolie rousse, Anja Wrede, et tout seul The Big Movie et Devine qui vient d\u00eener ce soir. Speed Dating, qui a trouv\u00e9 un \u00e9diteur d\u00e8s la deuxi\u00e8me partie test, est le premier \u00e0 para\u00eetre. The Big Movie devrait suivre assez rapidement. Les trois autres cherchent un \u00e9diteur, donc, si vous \u00eates int\u00e9ress\u00e9…<\/p>\n

Speed Dating ne para\u00eet pour l’instant qu’en fran\u00e7ais, \u00a0mais j’esp\u00e8re qu’il sera rapidement adapt\u00e9 dans bien d’autres langues. Adapt\u00e9 et non simplement traduit, car les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences et les clich\u00e9s sexistes qui ont fourni la mati\u00e8re de la plupart des cartes de ce jeu ne sont pas tout \u00e0 fait les m\u00eames en France, aux \u00c9tats-unis, en Allemagne, en Chine ou ailleurs. Si certaines cartes peuvent \u00eatre simplement traduites, beaucoup devront sans doute \u00eatre totalement r\u00e9\u00e9crites, et cela demandera un peu de temps et de travail.<\/p>\n

Speed Dating est publi\u00e9 par un jeune \u00e9diteur, Letheia, dont c’est la deuxi\u00e8me r\u00e9alisation, et tr\u00e8s joliment illustr\u00e9 par Giulia Ghigini. Il devrait arriver dans les boutiques fin octobre.<\/p>\n

In the eighties, I used to play tabletop role playing games, mostly Dungeons and Dragons. In the nineties, I moved to live action RPGs. I\u2019ve kept from these good old days a liking for strongly themed games, and the idea that live action role playing games are the essential form of gaming, and that all other games, be they sport, boardgames or even online games, are only lazy substitutes. I got older, I wanted to move to something else, and I didn\u2019t have enough time, so I gave up role playing games, but I always regretted it a bit.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019m coming back to it with Speed Dating, the hilarious card game I\u2019ve designed with my friend Nathalie Grandperrin. In Speed Dating, each player must use the cards in his hand to design a character, to introduce him (or her), and to convince another player that he (or she) is her o(or his) best match. Speed Dating feels like a minimalistic role playing game, in which a character is just made of three small cards, always different ones \u2013 for example \u201cwar weapons collector, spends his holidays in Kazakhstan, likes movies about gladiators\u201d \u2013 all male cards, of course – or \u201ceats only organic vegetables, enjoys to talk about her childhood with swinger parents in the seventies, campaigns to save the whales\u201d \u2013 all female cards. The scenario is always the same, a Speed Dating evening. At the Last bar before the end of the world, the Parisian geek caf\u00e9 where I made several game tests sessions these last months, Speed Dating was the most played and the most praised among my prototypes. This is not surprising. This talking game with simple rules fits well in a caf\u00e9 ambiance, especially after several cocktails, and most geeks are former RPG players.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Technically, Speed Dating could be considered an epitome of role playing game, but it\u2019s also, and may be more, a hilarious party game, in the vein of Taboo, Time\u2019s Up or The Big Idea. Party games are a very specific genre. I\u2019ve always enjoyed playing them, having regularly played Taboo as a teenager, and The Big Idea, Gift Trap or Win these last years. On the other hand, I didn\u2019t think I was good at designing them, since my previous attempts either completely failed, either happened to be too similar with existing games. I don\u2019t know exactly why, but the deadlock was broken in early 2012 and, in a few months, I designed four. Speed Dating and Sitting Bull, another zany card game, I designed with my friend Nathalie Grandperrin. A Day in my life I designed with another pretty redhead, Anja Wrede. Guess who\u2019s Coming for Dinner and The Big Movie I designed all by myself. Speed Dating found its publisher during the second playtest, and is the first to hit the shelves. The Big Movie ought to follow soon, but the three other ones are looking for a publisher. If you\u2019re a publisher looking for a light party game, I’m your man.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Speed Dating is published only in French so far, but I have strong hopes that it will be adapted soon in other languages. Adapted and not just translated, because it\u2019s not only language dependent, it\u2019s culture dependant. The sexist clich\u00e9s, puns and references which are used in most of the cards are not exactly the same in France, in Germany, in the US, in China or elsewhere. More or less half of the cards can probably be simply translated, but the other ones have to be replaced, and this means some time and some work.<\/em><\/p>\n

Speed Dating is the second game of a new French publisher, Letheia. It has been cutely illustrated by Giulia Ghigini. It ought to be on sale in France in late October.<\/em><\/p>\n
