Nous avons mang\u00e9, fort bien, puis nous avons jou\u00e9, fort bien aussi, et nous avons finalement commenc\u00e9, comme il se doit entre auteurs de jeux, \u00e0 m\u00e9dire de nos confr\u00e8res &#8211; bon, j&#8217;exag\u00e8re, car de quelques uns nous avons dit du bien.<\/p>\n<p>Il nous a sembl\u00e9 qu&#8217;un crit\u00e8re simple, et d&#8217;apparence anecdotique, pouvait permettre de diviser les auteurs de jeux en deux cat\u00e9gories correspondant \u00e0 deux philosophies du jeu. Sylvie et moi-m\u00eame avons spontan\u00e9ment tendance \u00e0 concevoir des jeux de cartes dans lesquels, lorsque vient le tour d&#8217;un joueur, il commence par piocher une carte avant d&#8217;en jouer une. D&#8217;autres auteurs, comme Bruno Cathala et de nombreux allemands, pr\u00e9f\u00e8rent que le joueur joue d&#8217;abord une carte, puis en pioche une \u00e0 la fin de son tour.<\/p>\n<p>Quelle diff\u00e9rence, me direz-vous? Si tous les joueurs fonctionnaient comme des ordinateurs ultra-rapides, il n&#8217;y en aurait pas. Comme, fort heureusement, tel n&#8217;est pas le cas, il y en a une.<\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer que l&#8217;on pioche au d\u00e9but de son tour, c&#8217;est d&#8217;une part s&#8217;ancrer dans la tradition des anciens jeux de cartes qui, du Ramy aux Mille Bornes, ont toujours fonctionn\u00e9 ainsi. Surtout, c&#8217;est privil\u00e9gier l&#8217;effet de surprise, le &#8220;fun&#8221; sur la r\u00e9flexion et la strat\u00e9gie. Pendant le tour de ses adversaires, chacun va r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 ce qu&#8217;il pourrait faire lorsque son tour viendra, mais va aussi se prendre \u00e0 r\u00eaver qu&#8217;il pioche la carte id\u00e9ale. lorsque vient son tour, la carte pioch\u00e9e, inattendue, pourra parfois le faire r\u00e9agir de mani\u00e8re impulsive, peut-\u00eatre m\u00eame lui faire faire une erreur &#8211; et c&#8217;est cel\u00e0 aussi, pour nous, le plaisir du jeu.<\/p>\n<p>Pr\u00e9f\u00e9rer que l&#8217;on termine son tour en piochant une carte. c&#8217;est donner au joueur tout loisir de pr\u00e9parer son tour, de r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 toutes les possibilit\u00e9s et \u00e0 leurs cons\u00e9quences. C&#8217;est donc privil\u00e9gier la strat\u00e9gie, la profondeur, au d\u00e9triment de l&#8217;effet de surprise et de ce qui est, pour beaucoup, le d\u00e9roulement &#8220;naturel&#8221; d&#8217;un jeu.<\/p>\n<p>Je n&#8217;ai pas relu les r\u00e8gles de tous les jeux de cartes qui tra\u00eenent sur mes \u00e9tag\u00e8res, mais j&#8217;avoue que cela m&#8217;amuserait de voir quel auteur se range dans quel camp&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Last summer, like every year, I visited Sylvie Barc in her remote farm in the deep french countryside. We had a really good dinner, and played a few really good games. Then, of course, we started to speak ill of some fellow game authors &#8211; well, Im exaggerating, we speak well of a few ones.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the course of the discussion, we found out that a small and seemingly anecdotic criterion could be used to divide game authors in two categories, may be even in two philosophical schools. Sylvie and I, when designing card games, tend to have players, on their turn, first draw a card and then play one. Other ones, like Bruno Cathala and many german authors, systematically prefer to have a player first play a card, then draw one at the end of his turn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Is there any real difference? If everybody could play like a fast thinking computer, there would be none. Happily, such is not the case.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The \u201cdraw a card, then play a card\u201d rule has two meanings. On the one hand, it\u2019s a way to anchor the game in the long tradition of older card games, from rummy to Mille Bornes, which are all played this way. On the other hand, it strengthens the surprise and fun aspect of the game, to the detriment of deep thought and strategy. During opponents\u2019 turns, one will try to think of what one will do next, but will also day-dream of the card one could draw when one\u2019s turn comes. This card, when drawn, may cause some impulsive reaction, and may be sometimes a bad move \u2013 but that\u2019s an important part of the game fun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The \u201cplay a card, then draw a card\u201d rule emphasizes on strategic planning. It means one can think of all the possible moves, and check their possible effects, before one\u2019s turn comes.
