Le Roi des Nains
The Dwarf King

The Dwarf King is not much talked about in the small boardgaming world. It is nevertheless one my few games selling regularly every year, the other ones being Citadels, Mascarade and Diamant, and it will probably still be around ten years from now. The reason for this paradox is that its players are not all boardgame enthusiasts. Many are probably players of traditional trick taking games such as Whist or Bridge who enjoy a light card game which recycles with humor and lightness the systems they already know and enjoy.

The core system of The Dwarf King is standard trick-taking, but the goal of the game is different with every deal of cards – it can be for example to win the two last tricks, or as few tricks as possible, or four tricks in a row, or to catch the sixes and sevens. In every deal of cards, one special card is added and brings some more variety – for example the Mummy which copies the card which won the last trick, or the Shaman which makes the players who wins it lose three points. The dwarf king is certainly not as technical as Bridge or Whist, but believe me, it’s more fun and light.

The Dwarf King is now more than ten years old. Ten years are almost nothing for a dwarf, but it’s nowadays a lot for a game. It was time to have a fresh look at it. The cards in the new edition have a more classical poker size, which might look less elegant but makes them easier to sleeve. The true change is with the goal tiles. They are easier to read and, more importantly, we have removed the five or six ones  players that players liked the least have been replaced with new light and fun ideas. I hope you’ll enjoy them.

So, no big changes, but small improvements, including a more classy box – but as a boomer, I like good-old two part sliding to boxes – what we call “bell box” in French, but I don’t know how to call them in English. If you want to read more about the game and its design process, you can read my old blogpost about the first edition.

    • French version is out. I think there will be an Englis version, I don’t know when. Iello is reorganizing its distribution in the US, and I don’t know the details.
